The only conventions worth going to multiple times are video game conventions like pax. because there is different games every year.
Most people go with their friends to anime conventions so making friends at them is kind of hard because most people just wanna stay with their friends. Unless your whole goal is to buy merch and whatever anime figure may end up being rare

although, in the past, it seems like there were smaller conventions attended by a completely different demographic
i look at footage from like 2012 and earlier from anime conventions & similar, and there's alot of weirdos, some of them cool/inoffensive and some of them completely chris chan level
i get the impression it was much easier to meet people there at those times, and less predictable of an experience from each convention

Yeah that's back before anime and video games reached it's current level of popularity. Back when if you watched anime other than DBZ or Naruto you were weird. That's back when G4 was thr primary news source aside from magazines for video game news and you heard about various things like anime/video game news from your friends
i was just entering high school around 2012.
I remember i knew what monster hunter was before anyone in my high school did.
Simply because i read about Tri on the wii in game informer and was like "wow that looks cool"
Then 2016 happened an entire generation of anime fans that made it their entire personality(at the time) like me graduated and went onto college and then it became really popular
