>Despite their short life, 4chan posts cascaded so quickly that they created a constant flow of new content and rolling images that hooked viewers into endless scrolling, the basis of all social media.gives some credit to 4chan for being ahead of the curve ok ok.
>Initially 4chan had a single board for anime and videogames. Several boards were later created for different interests, including politics, thus segmenting their userbase into groups and allowing users to find their tribe.ok see 4chan is not like reddit. reddit by design reinforces conformity through downdoots literally hiding your posts and rampant capricious mod autocracy. 4chan boards are nowhere near as homogeneous as subreddits. a board's many threads can simultaneously house contrary opinions and sentiments.
>Moot fought to ban [Gamergate] from 4chan in 2014 and sold the domain within a year, in defeat and disgust.uhhuh.
there was other stuff that was really really dumb. after skimming this i never saw them flatout lie but they misrepresented many things. like think about how far you can distort reality even if every statement you make is factually 100% correct. it's so easy if you just leave out other important information and context.

>>22950389That was an awful lot of work to go through to basically conclude that incels hate women, society, and themselves, and reinforce this with imagery. Their bias towards gender performativity was pretty clear. Still an interesting read. It's not explicitly stated, but they seem to think that incels are actually unknowing victims of a patriarchal society, where the majority of their angst stems from their failure to live up to constructed gender norms that exclusively value men for a small number of qualities, such as physical attractiveness and dominance. A pretty ironic thought for a group that sees itself as rabidly anti-feminist.
I wish they'd speculated more about the relationship between doomerism and "right wing" ideology, but it was probably outside of their scope.
7/10 overall.
>>22950391>the chapterVery strong "screaming into the void" vibes with this one. It reads like Uncle Ted's manifesto if it were updated for 2025, with an inversion of the anti-left bias that document had. The part related to 4chan felt like a pretty hard digression from the overall point of the chapter, which is that technology is destroying the essence of what it means to be human. His wanted to illustrate the destructive effect that Internet-facilitated activism can have in the real world, but his personal fondness for the parts of that activism he personally agrees with undermined that message somewhat. I don't appreciate the characterization of Gaymergate as an organized harassment campaign against women and journalists specifically, since it ignores a lot of the underlying causes of the movement.
Still, he's ultimately correct. He did a very good job outlining the way that big tech corporations exploit/engineer human behavior for the sake of sheer profiteering. His illustration of how terribly this effects people in day-to-day life is persuasive. It's a bit alarmist, overall, but it's alarmism in the right direction.

so people are attributing it to payment processors but this isn't the whole story. the payment processors all got together not independently but because of a registered not-for-profit charity organization called collective shout.
https://www.collectiveshout.org/open-letter-to-payment-processors
https://www.collectiveshout.org/about
>Collective Shout is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and is governed by a board of directors. We are an independent registered charity with no affiliation to religious or political institutions.
now a surprise for you. the founder of collective shout is staunchly pro-life.
>Tankard identifies as a "pro-life feminist". Tankard believes that abortion is a form of "violence against women", one that many find traumatic and laden with regret.
>"Abortion is often an excuse not to deal with the structural conditions that compel women to have abortions," she told One Plus One. She draws the line at government regulation, she says, preferring to focus "on those women who would rather not choose abortion. What can we do to make it easier for women who would prefer to make another choice?" (In the '90s, she co-founded Karinya House, an organisation providing support for pregnant women "in crisis".)
there's a lot of other details to this whole steam thing but i'm not gona spam the happenings thread just for this one thing. suffice to say if you see people peddling the payment processor narrative remember that is not exactly what happened here though obviously they were necessary. as for the pro-life facet well i did a cursory ctrlf because i'm not reading those shit threads and it's been brought up a few times. so that gives you a not so quick rundown on the delistings if you didn't know the details.
>>22953723this very obviously comes off as heritage foundation fuckery and the people behind it don't want gen z men to turn on them.
>>22951386No, this is a return of an old brand of conservatism, dating back to the Gilded Age. If it's bad for morals, then you want the government to regulate it. Otherwise, fuck off and let business be business.
Additionally, Visa and Mastercard aren't government actors, nor are they even government-adjacent. This, then, isn't even really contrarian. Government bad, corpos good. Simple as that.
>>22953779>If it's bad for morals, then you want the government to regulate it.The problem is always who gets to decide when it's bad for morals. When it aligns with your feelings it's of course going to feel like the right thing to you, but as soon as someone who disagrees with you gets to make that decision, welcome to Sharia law. It's better to just let people make their own decisions and accept that some people are going to make bad ones.
>>22953723Are gay games without incest or other "problematic" content being removed?

payment processors being used as a regulatory/censoring force is kinda crazy, i just wanna know why this happened
>>22953759nah i doubt they're connected. anti-porn feminists aren't that rare. it's just that this org has been very effective lately.
>>22953848nope. their headline sums it up.
https://www.collectiveshout.org/open-letter-to-payment-processors
they're also the org behind that other game getting taken down a few months ago. and if you check their faq they're basically anti-porn.
>As sociologist and founder of Culture Reframed Gail Dines explained, "People who often criticise pornography are called โanti-sexโ, to which I would argue that if you want to be pro-sex you have to be anti-porn. You canโt be pro-porn and pro-sex, you have to pick one. I think those of us who are against pornography are against pornography because we canโt stand what it does to sex. We canโt stand to see the way in which it reduces sex to an industrial, toxic product, which is exactly what pornography does.">We believe people should be able to develop healthy relationships and authentic sexuality free from the influence of the global porn industry and its messages.again to be clear this current delisting wave is very very specific but when i read that on their faq it looks like they're against porn in general so who knows what they'll try in the future.
>>22953851>are you sure it was this one random charity organization which managed to make all this shit happen?this current specific event in particular yes. they've done a bunch of campaigns and most of them aren't vidya-related. but earlier this year they did a different vidya-related one for that one game. you probably heard about it. it was pretty big.
>i just wanna know why this happenedwhat do you mean? they published a public statement talking about it.

>>22953809You've hit on why that became the trend in the latter half of the 20th century. Unfortunately for you, you live in an era where we've been dealing with the negative consequences of that (because everything has tradeoffs) for so long that the zeitgeist is moving the other way again. Teetotalling didn't become a thing until alcoholism was rampant and it appeared that few were interested in saving themselves or breaking the cycle. It'll be up to you to decide which hill you want to die on, if any, because my money's on this trending getting worse before it gets better.
If it's any consolation, assuming things move at roughly the same pace, you probably won't live to see the worst of it, and your great grandkids will probably come of age in a freer, more libertine era.

i had no fucking idea
>>22954635better than twitter having actual fucking CP findable basically instantly
I watched the video
so basically what it's basically about is not really the ai slop (except usa__kids , which if you saw the youtube video...), hear me out, but the nefarious accounts in the comment section who upload links, or call attention to the links in their bio
so in effect, these pedos (the root issue at hand here) can show up in any comment section
>>22954704Yeah, it's Telegram bots on there too.

>>22954711>>22954718I really wonder how much of this is related to the commercial CP spam you see on altchans. 4chan will occasionally get hit by it too but the mods are quick to take it down.

the fbi is doing nothing except entrapping random neurodivergent teenagers in domestic terrorism sting operations
despite whatever damages they might have, and despite them being pedophiles, pedophiles are basically just normies
that's why they use things like telegram
they probably google "is telegram secure?" and read "Yes. Telegram uses encryption" etc etc & decide it's secure
they probably have no conception of a honeypot for the most part
>>22954635I think there's a size/volume component. 4chan can afford to police it better because it's in the sweet spot where it isn't so small it hasn't attracted anyone willing to invest the time to police the site, but it also isn't so big that it the profit motive is in control and so it is deemed uneconomical to dedicate the resources and man hours necessary to police the site. Now clearly this can be automated, YouTube teems with people bitching about the arbitrary decisions obviously made by bots. I wonder if the current legal landscape is such that the companies would rather accept a certain number of pedos nakedly soliciting each other than risk driving off their other users with overly-aggressive bots that nail too many false positives alongside the actual stuff.
>>22954623>4chan happenings thread>posts social media
arguing about which platform does the best job at blocking CP is stupid imo, it's just a wast eof time

>>22957729>believing an obvious schizo
>>22957963i had to look it up
i think they're KINDA mutually exclusive, since a platitude is often meaningless while an idiom has meaning
on the other hand, a platitude can just mean a phrase which has been said many many times, cliche but not necessarily meaningless
the meaning of an idiom is often nonliteral, which can make it hard to understand unless you're a native speaker of the language

>>22951360>constructed gender norms that exclusively value men for a small number of qualitiesThe issue with this is that even women who consciously try to avoid everything they link to the "patriarchy" are still attracted to those traits. Considering the entirety of female attraction to be a social construct is a false premise.
>>22962101>Like clockworkyou're not using that correctly
>>22962330Like most things, it's too complicated an issue to sum up easily. Women as a whole are attracted to "alpha" characteristics in the same way that men as a whole are attracted to "feminine" ones, but you can find so many exceptions in both groups that the validity of trying to apply this to any given individual is questionable at best. The feminists have a point in saying that mass media has perpetuated these stereotypes to a harmful degree by making men and women over-focus on the most surface-level facets of attraction; physical appearance and glib charm are upheld as the end-all-be-all of human mating rituals in a lot of people's minds. In reality, people can be attracted by a large variety of traits, or even pick a partner they are not especially attracted to due to other concerns (ability to provide for a family being an overstated one). It is also demonstrable that some gender norms evolve over time and/or vary depending on the society you live in. However, they do go too far when claiming that there is no biological basis in attraction whatsoever, and they tend to (rather hypocritically) characterize males as the progenitors/beneficiaries of the problems they describe rather than victims of such.
