>had a lot of Ubisoft-esque stuff to it
Not at all. There is nothing like that.
Give me an example?
For comparison DL2 has X amount of convoys, dark zones, forsaken stores, windmills, military tech locations. Its all cut and paste checklist shit.
DL1 has literally NONE of that. All it has in any sense is safe zones you activate, which again, are all unique, and quarantine zones, which are all unique dungeon type of shit.
>Lots of fetch quests
This is all just padding side content which you grab and do on the way to your main objective or larger side quests. its all there to give you XP and minor rewards. Plus makes fucking sense in the game as all the survivors are stuck in the tower and only you (well the runners) have the balls to go out and get shit in the world.
If you also remember that shit (fetch quests) are completely gone in the old town (iirc, there might be some small quests like fetch flowers etc in the wilderness areas)
>generic challenge courses
These are like I mentioned above, padding but a lot of these are also the DLC shit.
I have never even done the DLC challenges, I hate that shit. DL2 has shit loads of them, its annoying as fuck.
Again though, there as padding so you can grind XP in the early game if you like.
You can actually just skip all that shit and you will still level up to max doing the main story and probably the bigger side quests.
The only issue is when you hit old town you get the grappling hook so do less parkour and often you would end up needing a shit load of parkour XP before you reach end game.
I remember having to grind parkour for my last few levels (in retrospect I should have grinded those challenges)
Now they have added the infinitely repeatable bounties that you basically can do passively so no need to grind.
DL2 I barely ever even do the side quests. though I intend to do them all on my last NG+ playthrough.
DL1 I did every quest in the game at one point, but am on infinite NG+ so it resets it all.
