FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
Usage: paste into Powershell, run.

>and Office?
Same method, use Ohook
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

proper gpu passthrough?
i don't know how it's changed since they've apparently open sourced WSL's runtime but it used to be getting the actual Hyper-V VM interfaces you'd need for stuff like that involved hacking on undocumented COM interfaces
you're probably just missing something you need to do the WSL2 compute passthrough thing CUDA and now ROCm support, you need WSL2 specific beta drivers for windows, probably best to only use the supported ubuntu versions and the WSL runtime from the windows store, and then you install and run the amdgpu installer package with at least the wsl and rocm usecases

is AI imagegen so far behind the times the shitty python UIs are still stuck only using pytorch directly for inference the same way they were when stable diffusion released?
wtf
AI on windows and AMD is a solved problem, and there are alternative and better performing tensor/ML libraries for that matter, like multiple at this point
GGML is probably the biggest alternative tensor library and only needs the HIP runtime + ROCm math libraries to run via the ROCm backend, which are supported on windows, or can also use AMD AI hardware via the vulkan backend and cooperative matrix support
there's got to be diffusion model support somewhere
i'm not sure how much of intel's SYCL based stack works on top of the HIP backend in general and on windows but even that might work

But the updates he pushes can be anything. You fully trust that one single person.
Kate has a developer community, their build is happening by a CI and commits need approval of multiple people. This is a huge difference.

Of course there are tons of other options. Since Kate mains Linux, you can't expect it to be without problems on Windows.

But you can just use VSCode or Sublime.
I think people are stuck with Notepad++ because they think that editors used for software development are too complicated for them.
Pic related is a 12MB install, a magnitude superior to Notepad++ and arguably easier to use, despite it being mainly used for software development.

email on the go/in the pocket was a major reason to get a pda/smartphone well before the iphone
now sure, anon's dad probably didn't get the telex for that, and for anyone who couldn't justify a pda/early smartphone, or just use email before those and never felt the need to get either at all, sure.
what i want to say is something else, why set up an account with a recovery email that can only be accessed on the very thing you might want to recover? but really, the idea of online windows accounts isn't something i'd use in the first place, so i do get it. i moved to linux well before that was even an optional thing (and i know it still is if you know what you're doing, but we're talking about what is probably a typical dad-of-an-adult here, maybe not quite elderly but certainly not a computer fag)
in their effort to make computers "easier to use" all they've really done is add more layers of complexity. window 95 was really as easy as it got. anything on top of that is just more complexity, and that's probably showing my own age

Hello friends, I've been around these threads since late 2019 and I've been using Win 10 LTSC on all of my computers and recently I decided to bite 11 LTSC and it was horrible. It made me reconsider and I actually went ahead and tried Linux Mint. It takes time adjusting to it, but a lot of features are now present. Last time I tried it was in 2017 and it was way more lacking than it is now. It's been a good ride, but without a doubt, Microshaft is going to ruin the computing experience for all of us. 10 LTSC still has a lot of time to go, however realistically speaking it's going to lose support from a lot of developers around 2028-2029 (would be actually great if they kept supporting 21H2 even after 2032, but only gods will do this). Anyways that's it for my blogpost, if you have any questions, go ahead. It took me a few days to migrate from NTFS partitions to ext4, but it was also a great time to sort my files and delete junk.

I just ran into an issue when trying to recover my PC from sleep. In terms of fans and rbg it seemed to wake up but my monitors didn't come back. They didn't "no signal" but they just never woke up. I tried hotkeys to reset the gpu driver and sleep the PC again but it didn't respond. I think this is the second time I've ever ran into this.

Is there anything I can do in such a situation to restore the PC without a hard reset? This time I hit the reset button and lost everything I had opened. I don't remember what I did the last time and how it went.

I was having issues with some sites being broken or having broken images, after checking around, I found that "http.referer.XOriginPolicy" and "network.http.referer.XOriginTrimmingPolicy" were set to 1 and 2 in about:config, and putting both to 0 solved the issue with said sites, but the thing is I do not remember changing these settings ever and it seems like a security feature. Is it just superfluous and safe to leave at 0, or is there a way to bypass it for specific sites while leaving it on?

You're supposed to input the credentials of the PC's account that has access privileges to the folder share.
Did you use the simple file sharing method with the fancy Aero wizard, or did you do it the good ol' way with folder properties -> sharing tab?

it's an ffmpeg based thumbnailer, iirc the default config doesn't support all the formats that ffmpeg does so you can go through it and add a bunch more file extensions

just as a point of reference there's no point using non-ffmpeg audio/video stuff
there's a bunch of retarded gay shit like the klite codec pack, or those dumb windows store codecs but if's a codec that matters (and plenty that don't) it's included in ffmpeg and if it matters it uses ffmpeg as a library

for some reason things like media foundation, directshow, and those stupid windows store codecs haven't been taken back behind the shed and shot
i presume it's a real bitch and a half to make a backend covering all the ways that windows provides codecs, especially considering there is an ffmpeg directshow backend that isn't really maintained

I recently switched from 10 LTSC to 11 LTSC
It's a mixed bag. Multi monitor support is a LOT smoother than it was in 10, menus and UI are mostly improved (sans context menu) but you also have shit like the recommended section bloating the start menu that stays even when you turn recommendations off, folder thumbnails have their contents cut in half, shit like that. There really is about as many improvements as there are regressions.
Explorer in 11 is notably slower on my T480s laptop than it was in 10, while my modern Ryzen desktop sees no real difference.
If you already have a working 10 install then don't bother. If you need a new OS then 11 LTSC is mostly fine.

You should probably be fine. Just clone the drive with Macrium and you should be free to go.
For edge cases where you migrate from a 512{e/n} drive to a 4K sector-native drive, it's not that simple.
https://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOWX/Incompatible+Disk+Selected

In which case you might just want to image the Windows partition (cut out the middleman and use DISM to image it from a WinPE)
dism /Capture-Image /ImageFile:"X:\Backup\WinBackup.wim" /CaptureDir:C:\ /Name:"Windows Backup" /Description:"%DATE% %TIME% - to NVMe drive" /Compress:max /CheckIntegrity /Verify /EA
Tune the CaptureDir value if the Windows volume letter you want to backup is different (so, not C:), and set the ImageFile path to the external storage.
Prepare the right partition layout for your new drive with diskpart (a notorious change with 4Kn drives is that the EFI partition has to be 260MB - with the extra 4 megs for safe measure: 4KB sector times 65526 clusters for minimum FAT32 volume size).
Then you deploy the Windows image with the very same tool you made a capture of - DISM (but with the /Apply-Image switch: set the ApplyDir path accordingly.)
dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:"X:\Backup\WinBackup.wim" /Index:1 /ApplyDir:W:\ /CheckIntegrity /Verify /EA
After that you make the installation bootable with BCDBoot - it will deploy the Windows Boot Manager in the EFI system partition and set-up the BCD registry. Also configure the recovery partition with REAgentC.

Here's some neat MSFT documentation regarding manual deployment of Windows.

Yeah, I end to search massgrave before I ask anything specific. I'm still kinda confused on two things:
- after reading their guide, it seems Office 365 is the more useful version to install (custom installation page), am I right?
- what happened to OneDrive? I remembered about it after Windows Photos asked for a sync and I definitely had some stuff on there I"d like to recover. However, there's no mention of it on the Windows Store, while Internet has some third-party pages allegedly containing the install , but I'm not too quick to trust that, so I'll ask you guys - is OneDrive even alive at this point?

office 365 is the web and enterprise subscription version of office
the yearly releases of office are the one you want unless you're on linux because unlike the yearly releases it actually works there
not that easy to get even legitimately which is why you didn't find a link to them, normally i think scripts download them from some internal MS urls or something
activating office does have to use malware like techniques which trip defender in order for an activation server to run on your local machine because normally that's banned
if that concerns you all you need to do is run a KMS server (that's the activation protocol, there's multiple open source implementations) on a second device on the network, including on androids with termux
and you should be able to just point the activation at that
>what happened to OneDrive?
there's a client deeply built into windows now, i think into file explorer, never actually used it
that has caused a fair amount of issues because they try to push cloud by default for stuff like my documents and have actually messed up handling sync before and deleted a bunch of people's shit
if you actually want to use a cloud provider like onedrive as a backup option do it through rclone, the synchronization library it uses is much more robust than whatever MS was doing, you have 50 other backend options, and it still supports mounting cloud storage as a filesystem

>run regedit

>find a dword with a value of 0
Which disables Windows Search funnily enough, because when Windows 10 came out, Windows Search was called Cortana, and it still obeys those registry values.

Jesus christ why doesn't windows 11 installer recognize this nvme drive that I can use perfectly fine as 'storage space' on windows 10? None of these AMD chipset drivers are helping the installer see my drive. In fact the only time when the installer has seen this drive is when win 10 has already set it up as a 'virtual disk' storage space thing which is apparently different from a simple partition so I deleted it. I guess this is a sign to stay on win10 on my old drive

Just capture the drive to a .WIM image with DISM's /Capture-Image (preferably from Windows PE rescue media, unless you want to mess with capturing from a shadow copy snapshot in the running OS)
See this post for an example: >>105847461
>of course you can change the CaptureDir path, e.g. you want to backup your %UserProfile% with all the subfolders and files

WIM captures are file-based (and single-instance, so redudant data are once stored.)
You can cherrypick files to restore from the .WIM if you open it in 7-Zip (and can't be arsed to mount the image with DISM.)
You can also compress it (like in the example) and append a yet another capture to the same image (which combined with the single-instancing, the size won't drastically change if the data is almost the same.)

The drive I'm trying to connect to is formatted as ext4.
Virtual Machine Platform, Windows Hypervisor Platform, and Windows Subsystem for Linux (in Windows Features) are turned on (and rebooted).
Installed WSL (which auto-installed Ubuntu) through the terminal as Windows Administrator.
Currently in the terminal as an adminstrator.

Have tried installing Ubuntu as an app through the Microsoft Store (which also installs WSL) and tried connecting to the drive the same way, but get the same results. Every time I made sure to fully uninstall any distros, WSL, and even unchecked the Windows Features above and redid the process from scratch, rebooting as needed, before attempting a new installation.

On a fresh Windows 11 installation (only a few days old), 24H2, all Windows Updates installed. But my 6th gen Intel CPU is officially unsupported so I had to do the command prompt workarounds during installation. I couldn't find any specific virtualization options in my BIOS like 'Intel Virtualization Technology' or 'Vt-X' even after updating the BIOS to the latest version, but anything that looked like it could affect virtualization I made sure to turn on. If it helps, I have Linux Mint installed on a separate SSD from the Windows installation, and I can run Windows 11 24H2 in Virtual Box without any issues. So I think I have virtualization support.

In my original setup, I had Windows 11 as the main OS and the HDD formatted as NTFS, which the Linux Mint install could read and share files with. But now I have Linux Mint as my main OS and I want the bigger storage drive to be formatted in ext4 primarily for Linux, and have Windows 11 as the backup OS that would be able to read/pull files from the storage drive if needed. I guess I could go back to the old setup if all else fails, but it would be nice if I could get this to work. I've seen other options like paid third party software and some open source alternatives, but I'm trying to do it through WSL first.

first thing i see is that it's not actually properly referring to the disk, you can tell cause you've only got 1 slash in the error which means it's being interpreted as escaping a character and you need to double up
wsl.exe --mount \\\\.\\PHYSICALDRIVE1 --bare
quoting might have also worked, i don't remember what differences in quoting rules windows powershell has vs real powershell

i assume you know have to turn the disk offline in disk management same as if you'd intended on attaching it to a normal VM

No, you've been able to switch between editions without re-installing since WIndows 8. You can use MAS to change a Home/Pro install into Enterprise in a couple keyboard presses then re-activate.

No. You only have to re-install when you switch from GAC to LTSC (but even then there's an unsupported method to do it without re-installing)
MAS has a function that lets you switch editions easily. You just switch then restart your machine

How big of a difference is the 365 vs office 2024? Anything notable?

I've wasted so much time trying to use WSL for ComfyUI over the last 2 days. I'm about to just give up. An RTX 3060 would be more useful to me than this piece of shit RX 9070

It's the same thing. Every modern Office is basically just a live service version of Office 2016 and every yearly release is a more stable snapshot.

Yes that's usually the way with doing SD or LLM stuff on a PC IE using a NVIDIA card.

i really don't understand why you'd think you should be trying to run the latest release of ROCm, one which needs a custom version of pytorch from AMD's repos and potentially a patch to one of its libs, through 2 different beta proprietary drivers either side of the VM

it just it seems like a pain and very easy to fuck up

What are you trying to connect to the drive for exactly? Sharing files? Is it connected via USB?

Ah, that was it. Adding a single open and close quote around the drive path fixed it. I can now read/write files to the drive and share them with my linux install.
Thanks, anon. Seems like such a silly error, now that I think about it. I normally quote drive paths by default in native linux. Dunno how I missed that.

Just for storage. It's an internal HDD connected by SATA. In my old setup, I had it formatted to NTFS when Windows was my main OS, and my backup Linux OS could still read and write to the drive. Now that Windows is my backup OS, I wanted the drive to be formatted to something Linux could use more efficiently but still let Windows be able to read/write to it if needed. This new setup works perfect now.

exfat
hasn't been encumbered by IP for a long while
highish performance large capacity formattable and mountable by windows, linux (although WSL might need you do build a newer WSL kernel, and/or one built with exfat enabled) and android
