Rules wise this edition it was reducing toughness and strength and saves of units in an edition where every other army got tougher, not having any advance and charge, and not letting archons lead Incubi in the index when that is their explicit purpose. But since they fixed those last two now the most glaring miss is that Grotesques have no leadership even though Haemonculus are right there

I've only been painting minis for about 2 months now. I've been working on this Gravis captain and I've got a couple marines painted for a kill team but I find myself buying more and more minis. Anything I can do better besides drilling my barrels. Any tips on washes? I have nuln oil and I bought Liquitex varnish Gloss and Matte. I'm a little nervous about messing up the work I've already done because I'm new to varnishing and washes. It's all brush on btw

I was thinking the same thing. This guy hits absurdly hard for just a dude. What space marine character has S12 melee attacks? Dreadnaughts? No Eldar ones do. DW Vet thunderhammers are S10. Feels like it's breaking power scaling completely. His spear hits as hard as a lascannon.

Yeah, clean your mouldlines.
GW kits in particular often have them in pretty shitty places, look at your man's foot there in the light.
I use the back of my hobby knife but you can also use sandpaper/sanding sticks (use a finer grit).
As for the wash, my tip is to work fast and have a second brush (that is dry) to suck up the excess that is going to sit on the flat surfaces.
Remember you don't have to do it all at once so take your time section by section and be sure to let it dry fully before adding more paint.
You might consider skipping the cape with the wash, large flat surfaces are not ideal for washing.
I wouldn't even worry about varnishing your first minis especially if they're plastic.

dunk everything but the gold in nuln oil thinned with lahmian medium and the gold with reikland fleshshade, also thinned with medium. the medium helps it flow better and won't coffee stain as much. if you make a mistake it's easy to wipe off before it dries, or when it dries you can go over it again with the base colour

I don't really like washing marine main armor at all but the last time I said so I got shouted down.
I'd say when you wash stuff do be aware there are more options than brown and black. For example with gold I used to like using fleshwash, and now I use flesh contrast paint for the same thing. The red of that wash works good with golds.
When you wash you don't have to just slather it all on. Like on his sword for example you can just put black wash down where it meet the hilt, you don't have to just coat the whole blade.
Very simple old fashioned highlighting techniques are kind of the next bump up. I don't like the modern GW boxart style of highlighting everything but the older style that's a little more restrained and thinking about how light hits. This dudes cape is a great place to practice. Red with a little orange mixed in and then added to the highest points is relatively forgiving. And if you mess up bad just paint over it again.

The upcoming Imperial Fist Combat Patrol is pretty amazing when taking another look at it. Company Heroes is already a character discount box, and for getting it at an actual “discount” on top of that makes it an even better deal. Though maybe I’m biased because I like Terminators (the multi-part kit is what’s in the box as well) and Gravis can be neat. Hopefully they aren’t limited because it’s not the “edition version” of the Space Marine Combat Patrol.

Looks good so far buddy. For brushing on varnishes the key is to do lots of thin coats, and ensuring you don't get pooling. Gloss varnish is a little more forgiving than matte in that regard. For washes I'd suggest doing a thinned gloss coat over your basecoats, then doing your wash while ensuring it doesn't pool excessively anywhere. Once you wash dries you can hit it with your thinned matte varnish, again ensuring it doesn't pool in the recesses, repeating this step until suitably matte.

Lately it's been fun to return to old projects and not worry about whatever the latest bullshit in the rules, just models, paints, and engaging with the setting/lore. I airbrushed some marines from early 8th edition the other weekend and it's going to be fun when I have the time and energy to finish them. Apple Barrel paint was a real pain to put through an airbrush. I don't know why I did that. There is something fun about using low cost paints and materials, and I've had some good results with higher end craft paints, especially the metallics, but Apple Barrel ain't it.

I will check it out. My problem with it was that it was such a weak color over the primer I used and it took a very long time to build it up with thin coats of mostly air. I kind of wonder how much it really saves in the end, when more coats and time is needed, but the color did come out nice in the end.

I played against a similar list and my opponent had 10 Berzerkers with Kharn, another 10 with Juggerlord, two units of 3 eightbound, a rhino and some cultist. I think it'd make some sense to include some cultists or split the eightbound into 2 units to have more units to do actions and other stuff for scoring objectives. But yeah it's a 1000pts casual list anyway so it'd just work.

I forgot to mention but an Acolyte Iconward for that 4+FNP. I got them with flamers. Biophagus would probably be better if you're running them in Host of Ascension for getting lethals and sustained on a 5+. I don't have a Biophagus yet but I was thinking of pairing him with 10 Mining Tool acolytes, which I've also yet to build.

So just from a casual glance at the leaks, GW seems to have realized that a LOT of the old AT options just aren't working in the new Toughness/Strength Scheme as anything Sub S12 is worthless for Tank/Monster hunting.
The Conversion Beamer and Anti-Tank/Monster rules on 'middling' strength weapons seem to show that.

Also wondering if GW is also starting to figure out that Battleshock is likewise useless and going to shift into just 'x effect is applied if Y happens'

I think the issue is parking lot lists or some equivalent are too strong. A big tank or dreadnought should be strong, but list building is currently such where you can bring 4+ plus of them to any given battle.

S10 is only good for transports, if that, and Melta-guns are more an anti-small Terminator weapon than tank/monster weapon.

They'd need to do a mass rewrite of every relevant weapon, monster, and tank, something I frankly don't see them doing.

The big issue is that someone at GW thinks S10 is an anti-tank strength.
Its not, its Anti-Transport.
So you have a bunch of weapons that can 'maybe' wound on a 4+ on Predator equivalents but thats it.
The way the game functions, if you aren't wound a tank on 3+ and doing d6+x damage, its not a 'good' AT weapon.
I don't see them getting more complicated, I frankly think they're just going to start getting more generous with anti-x rules.
