Actually looking at a draft, writing the G/M/X-Y-Z codes by hand, and then testing the program by putting in a test piece (usually made of some soft wood or plastic) so as to see if it'll actually drill/cut/roughen/do w/e the fuq them sharp tools are meant to do in the right places.
My CNC instructor said that you can never be sure if your code will actually do what it's supposed to, since each machine maker may modify each G-code and M-code's meaning to suit whatever they want it to mean, in addition to individual users inputting their own tool params with unique hardnesses, offsets, diameters/lengths, and wear.
