Can't speak for other European countries, but the only nationwide competitor in the UK is Popeye's and they've only been over here for a couple of years plus it's still not everywhere. I think America have half a dozen competitors nationally. Popeye's is definitely better than KFC over here. It has less seasoning, but the coating is thicker and much more crispy. The tendies are huge as well. KFC is generally soggy when it's chicken pieces, the wings and strips are OK. Anyway, I estimate that Popeye's is ~33% more expensive.

The cost is a major factor but Americans are big time suckers so I don't think it's the largest issue. I personally think there is a trend right now between tenders and Nashville hot chicken which makes KFC seem boring to most people. What's more is I think there is a sentiment to make fried chicken as crispy as possible lately and KFC tastes better with chewy skin. They've really fucked it. Not only is it really expensive when chicken is cheap, they've fucked with the recipes too much.

The gravy is really bad nowadays. It has no savoriness, it's just a salty brown wallpaper paste. The potatoes are not fluffy mashed potatoes but a soft, semi-liquid potato slime that mixes with the tasteless gravy way too much. I remember them being dry, fluffy, and easily able to support a layer of gravy or be scooped up with biscuit or chicken bone.

The chicken has lost most of its flavor. Those 11 herbs and spices just disappear most of them. Mostly you taste pepper, salt, maybe MSG.

Something also changed with the way they make the chicken. It doesn't hold its integrity. It falls apart far too easily, to the point where if you pick up a drumstick half the time the meat will pull away from the bone, or the bone just breaks in half.

The only thing still good at KFC are the biscuits.

I have gone to KFC 3 times in the last 5 years. Each time, what I ordered felt like it was fried 30-60 minutes ago, and the breading/skin sloughs off soggy with grease. It’s genuinely appalling even compared to all other fast food establishments in my area, and I used to go to these places multiple times a week. I eventually found Chik-fil-a and never had a reason to look back. Fuckin’ A I love me some chik-fil-a, the restaurant I got is in my college commons so it’s always fried to order, clean, and professional.

There are two near me, one has been in operation since I was a kid and the other only opened two years ago
The newly opened one always has sub-par chicken (and is staffed mainly by islanders) whereas the other one usually produces great chicken (has 50/50 whites and brown people working there)

How many fast food chicken restaurants are there in Europe and Asia that compete directly with KFC? I'm going to guess not nearly what have here. But here in the US the problem is that KFC for decades coasted on being the only game in town in many places. It wasn't until the last 10-15 years that Chick Fila, Popeye, Raising Canes, Wing Stop and others like them started to aggressively expand beyond their original areas and start to go into areas in which KFC was the only game in town for fast food chicken. Now KFC because of years of lack of innovation have fallen way behind their competitors. They don't offer the best product or service or even price so they are in a no man's land in which they don't excel at anything and people have more choices than ever when it comes fast food chicken.

KFC has been a franchise-oriented brand for all of its history so I doubt those are Yum! Brands (Corporate) owned stores. Those will be one or more Chinese franchisee owned stores. Further, labor there is cheap compared to the US so the franchisee can afford to do things like table service.

Because chickfila was selling itself based around a better product to sell, the chicken burgers and fries, and selling them in a massive amount of stores and getting people through the store quickly.
Everyone else was selling fried chicken pieces. So it's demand was significantly bigger. Popeyes didn't sell a chicken burger until 2019 then when they finally did they experienced significant revenue growth (supposedly adding $400k to what was previously $1.4 million in sales per store).

It's entirely ownership at the franchise level and how much work they put in to make their location(s) worth a shit. I live in a town with two KFCs. They were complete garbage in every way. Slow, shitty service. Cold, poorly made food. Fucked up orders. Dirty restaurants.

Then they changed ownership a couple years ago and now they are 100x better in every way. Fast, friendly service. Food is always hot and fresh. Orders aren't fucked up. Restaurants are spotless. The last time I went there the owner was on the register to take my order and running back and forth between the register and the kitchen, which I never saw with the previous owner. The prices are high for fried chicken but unless you're using apps pricing is fucked for all of fast food now.
