Airline food.
Hey /ck/, what are your experiences with airline food? It can be the best and worst of them.

My personal best was eating a pasta dish on a flight in the Caribbean.

My company sent me to the US for boring shit. I arrived at the airport, they'd put me in business class. I was baffled. Basically I could drink in the associated lounge for free before the flight. I had my fill. On the plane, got a glass of champagne upon being seated. Had as many snacks and drinks as I requested. Had a 4 course meal: had a good chicken caesar to start, a blade of beef for main with accompaniments, a panna cotta for dessert, then a cheeseboard. A "speciality" coffee after that. I had cocktails, pints of lager, straight whisky. I got my money's worth. Luckily I didn't have to meet people until the next day

How long of a flight do you need to have, or how high of a class or airline in order to have actual meals?

i fly at least twice per year. at this point i will rather go hungry for 12+ hours than eat that shit ever again. sometimes ill pack two bags of jerky with me if it is a long flight and eat that instead.

i dont get on airplanes but if the meals are paid for as part of the ticket, do they give you to-go bags? can you just order the meals you've paid for with the ticket and effectively treat it like takeout?
otherwise there's no way i would ever eat like that, especially in front of other people. you don't need to be shoveling food into yourself like an animal
Anonymous No.21478456 [Report]
I usually enjoy the airline food I get. I find it weird that some people hate it so much. I prefer the simpler ones you can eat with your hands like brie cheese, bread with butter, chocolate pieces for dessert. One thing I didn't like was a side salad with its own tiny dressing cup. bit annoying fussing with that on an airplane

About 950, cheapest was 400 apparently. Whilst I loved freeloading, it wouldn't be worth it on my money. I'm tall, so economy is an inconvenience, but the extra room didn't help the fact I was in a tin can for hours

I have to fly long haul a few times a year because of work, so I've learned my way around airplane food.

My notes:

- long haul means open bar. nice to have but keep in mind you get dehydrated real quick on planes, so stick to 1-2 cocktails or 2 beers. avoid sparkling or gassy drinks because you'll feel like shit after.

- Bring snacks that are fresh, like bananas or even dried apricot, because they never have anything like that, it's all dry and packaged which means you'll get constipated by the end.

- Another tip: if you're doing long haul, always get the direct flight and always pick the aisle seat in the middle column, as far forward as possible - you'll get your food faster and you'll get off the plane faster at the end.

- best food selection in my experience so far has been with Singapore airlines and Cathay: you get a menu with 2-3 options, usually one eastern, one western, one vegetarian. Stewardesses always walking around with snacks and drinks and a good selection at the bar. They seem like they give a shit. Of the American airlines, i was pleasantly surprised by Alaskan even though they're not Big 3. Otherwise Delta. United can suck it.

- worst food experience BY FAR was with Finnair - cheap mac and cheese in a small portion on a 12 hour flight and you had to pay for drinks, they can fuck off.

For short haul and if you are flying business, British Airways is pretty comfy, you get your full english breakfasts in the morning, good teas and coffees, nice pasta for lunch etc, good airline for actual work trips, at least in Europe.

Best: flying NZ to Melb, 3 passengers on the flight. Once we took off they let us sit in first class.

Worst: Syd to LA on United, a few years after 9-11 when they were cutting costs.
A/C barely working on 40c day sitting on Sydney tarmac.
Old, rattly plane.
Shittiest pasta and tomato sauce you could imagine.

I've had pretty good experiences.
There's a chicken dish in sauce that Emirates has that's actually incredible.
A surprising number of pasta dishes are quality as well.
Pretty much any kind of dessert bakery has tasted like shit. Especially Turkish airlines (and hotels) constantly try and fail to make brownies/cupcakes taste or feel good. On that note, don't eat their attempts at western style cheese or bread. Turkish cuisine is generally amazing but they'll fuck up even very basic things like Gouda or bread rolls when coloring outside the lines.

Btw it's fucked how stingy airlines are with soda. Especially considering how there's multiple times where they gave you two cups of alcohol for free back in the pleb row.

Even most international is pretty bad now, unless you’re spending $10k for some leg room and a mid tier restaurant meal.
I just usually just grab a big deli sandwich and negotiate with the stewardess for extra snacks and booze and no meal.
Anonymous No.21479612 [Report]
The only thing I really remember about plane food from when I used to fly international were the ‘bagels’ you’d get at breakfast

These are no bagels, these are satan’s bunghole. Somehow sweet and also incredibly acrid. I don’t know how, but somehow every airline had sources the worst bagels possible.

first class i'll get meal offers usually around 3.5 to 4 hour + flights, if the flight is during breakfast or lunch or whatever
domestic last time i remember food was back in like the late 90s early 2000s (this might have been pre-9/11 only now that i think about it) where they'd have huge refrigerated coolers right outside the plane door with bags you could grab, had like a shitty sandwich some chips and a cookie or whatever
oddly enough i tried googling this to get a picture to add to my post but i can't find any. i wonder if i hallucinated this whole thing

Lifetime status and many million mile flyer. Have received global elite a few years.

The food is shite. A few long leg flights in First "try" to fool pax they are served gourmet but the ingredients are grocery store level, the recipes cheap and easy for beginning cooks, and the presentation looks like airline and not restaurant food. Service is whenever and however the crew feel like delivering a meal.

1995-2007 were premium. Today if it's more than a six hour flight I'll consider a lie-flat seat but the edibles are zero consideration. Even the Europeans, Japs, Kiwis, and MENAs devolved into crap. The Air New Zealand lounge in Sydney used to offer private chef service; now, they literally feature a make your own hot dog cart.

You who sit in back haven't been missing out on the food for years. Video streaming killed the need to fly for very lucrative business.

because china airline doesn’t have a first class, its premium business class seats are equivalent to first class seats for most other airlines

this means that you can actually get some pretty decent meals. the first meal is routinely served about an hour or so after take off (because most long haul flights are late), and then breakfast is usually served 4 hours before landing.

dinner is a 3-4 course meal including appetizer, salad, soup, entree, and then dessert which is either a cake of some kind or ice cream with a cheese & fruit platter.

What airline? I took emirates business class to Chennai and it was fucking awesome. It's a good thing too because that was a 24 trip each way and I cannot sleep on planes (except the one time I bought a couple of Valium in Thailand). Most of the first class meals I've had were really good. Short rib with mojo sauce and mac & cheese. Scrambled eggs with hash browns fruit and sausage. Vegetable lasagna. All great. The first time I had the short rib it was a perfect medium rare inside. There was one time the side salad had a vegetable I had never seen before and haven't been able to find it since. Something like a peruvian pearl pepper but inside it was more like a turks cap fruit.

There was one time they served us glorified lunchables which was ass.

It's harder to avoid when on long haul flights that are like 15 hours. Odds are high you are gonna shit. Only way to guarantee not to is enema yourself before hand and fast the whole way.

It's not that bad on the bigger aircraft. WAY more room in their bathrooms. Like enough room to comfortably join the mile high club.

Doing a shit in anything 737 or smaller is a pain the ass because of how tight and cramped that little ass room is.
