Well, In my interpretation, they are originally born from a great tree within wooden cocoons, which eventually break and release the Faerie, who slowly fade away along with the tree's life, which can only be revived with a queen.
They transform from Leshen to Faerie as a kind of metamorphosis.

The Fitzgeralds are a lineage who, out of fear of fading and being assimilated again by the forest, separated themselves from it. Generation after generation, they forgot why they feared breaking their wooden cocoon but maintained their refusal to release themselves in such a restricted way.

Like ori that born form the leaves of a Great Tree.

"But this queen was lost long ago. Her fading caused the tree to die, and with it the end of the Faeries who slowy faded in their roots. The forest then succumbed to the clutches of the evil fiends of darkness, but one day, this queen would awaken again, along with her royal guard, who would guide her into the now perilous grove once more to awaken the Great Tree and thus free the forest from darkness."

The story basically begins like this: Today is Penny's 15th birthday. Gumball and Darwin are helping Penny's dad in the garage, and after a series of missteps, the three end up breaking a mysterious Faerie Rune that only Penny's mom recognized as a family treasure.

After telling the three the story, Penny's dad and mom ask our protagonists to take Penny as far away from her house as possible until the "unwanted birthday guest" is gone.
(This being the Ambassador of the Forest and the first member of the Fitzgerald family who would come for Penny to take her to the Forest and revive the Great Leshen Tree.)

Gumball and Darwin were conveniently going on a trip, and the other Wattersons thought they could celebrate Penny's birthday... in the Forest, where they planned to set up camp.

while the other members of the Fitzgerald Family dealt with the arrival of the Ambassador of the Forest, who was asking for The Last Faerie.

Part 1 predictably ended with the Ambassador discovering that the Wattersons had Penny and, angrily, transforming into a Dragon and taking the Fitzgeralds into the Forest, while strange voices guide Penny deeper into the Forest—voices that are none other than those of all the creatures she transformed into, the Legendary Guardian Beasts.

Actually, having high expectations means that one can break away from a faulty IP much easier that someone who bullies himself into thinking that they can't really expect anything from entertainment ever again.
Years ago I did try to live by the tenet of lowering my expectations accordingly so that I wouldn't be disappointed - and doing so made me fucking miserable. Life has a way of dashing even the smallest and most insignificant of expectations, meaning that sensation of disappointment is inescapable. Plus, trying to lower and lower your expectations comes at a terrible cost of obliterating your self-worth until you end up forcing yourself to enjoy utter crap you would pass up otherwise.
Should S7 of Gumball fall flat on its ass, I'll simply move to other stuff that I enjoy and focus my attention on that instead.
