Checking VSBW Kazuya and Demon King Piccolo wouldn't be that different in power. This is the better way to do it if the setting is actually employing Christian themes outside of the 7 deadly sins.
Because those aren't meant to be "sinful" on their own (everyone engages in them from time to time) but rather serve as a door for people to lose themselves in more heinous sins.
But for settings that either don't take itself too seriously or don't want to use Christian/catholic themes as a base of their narratives the "Embody the sin through their behaviors" is a more efficient and simple way to portray it.

Every other Death Battle combatant this year has faced some degree of contention and opposition for one thing or another and yet there's near universal acclaim for his character and agreement that Shigaraki is way more powerful than Mahito, that his victory was the correct outcome and well explained, and that he had one of the best episodes of the year if not among the best of all time. Not only that but Shigaraki vs Mahito retains a very solid lead on view count, literally second only to Bowser vs Eggman in terms of 2024/25 episodes.
