That sounds plausible. Jax isn't the "above it all sigma" the kids love to glaze these days. He is more a coward than he is anything else - terrified of shame, terrified of not being in control, but also terrified of being alone. We know he cares about Gangle, and he also appears to be affected by Ragatha's admission about her own past and issues.

If we go a further layer into the analysis, it's possible that (since he is so far unwilling to behave in a way that preserves his emotional connections with others) the only way he sees to stave off total isolation is to impose himself on others with whatever means he can find. The simplest method available to him that keeps him feeling like he's in control are exactly the sorts of behaviors he engages in. These patterns of behavior only really work in a place like the circus where his targets for interaction can't simply leave (without effectively dying).

His feelings on Zooble are pretty simple in that framework - he's wary because they can and will hit back, and he can't roll with any punches very well. Realistically, his current connection with Pomni would unravel the moment she pushes back on his behaviors, because somebody IRL like Jax is simply not equipped to deal with the give-and-take of interpersonal relationships... unless they stop behaving like Jax does.

The only thing keeping Pomni there in such a scenario would be her being a complete pushover, which is already more Gangle's niche and actually closer to the way Ragatha has behaved before this episode.

I'll even go a few steps further and say that, pragmatically speaking, if Jax does not improve and is at risk of abstraction... in the context of the circus, he's not worth the effort and potential risk of trying to save.

I think Jax actually has a somewhat easier time getting close to Pomni not because she's a pushover but because she's more like an iron wall. She is good at resisting Jax's antics, but she has appropriately annoyed reactions to them, and she's never genuinely bothered by them. Unlike Gangle who just falls apart at the bullying and unlike Zooble who pushes back twice as hard.

That's fair, but I still think there's a very high risk of the connection unraveling from Pomni pushing back - ESPECIALLY since she's on good terms with Jax's usual targets, and defending the others seems like something that could get her to push back. Jax doesn't have a good answer to any "why are you always like this" questions Pomni asks, because there really isn't even a hypothetical good answer for it. People online (mostly kids, I'd wager) keep confusing "causative factors" for "justification" here - the latter doesn't really exist for some of his behaviors.

If she can't push him to improve, I think she's likelier to give up on him than abandon being on good terms with everyone else to satisfy him (which is often in the long term what someone like Jax's standard is for keeping that friendship up - it's part of what makes me think Ribbit was more of a partner in crime).

Considering Pomni's empathetic nature, I do think she is far more likely to simply try to learn the causes of Jax's issues and try to help him deal with them, rather than abandoning him. Nah, it's a confluence of a couple of things: One, a certain subset of Jax fans, especially younger, view him as a role-model with a childish "he's winning TADC" understanding of the character (based on stuff like the keys). They see the hint of a reason for his behavior and they've latched onto it immediately as a justification without even knowing how exactly everything played out. Any flaw of Ragatha's is something they are now latching onto because "their goat" got thoroughly embarrassed this episode and they're about as fragile about it as Jax himself is.

Two, people (generally younger or at least less mature) have vastly, VASTLY overestimated Ragatha's dishonesty. They mistake Ragatha trying to never express her own negative emotions for Ragatha hiding her true emotions to manipulate for gain; it's really as simple as Ragatha learning to fear reactions from others to her negative emotions. Ragatha is only being dishonest with herself, this "Machiavellian conniving bitch" image of Ragatha is completely imaginary and downright delusional.

I mean, for fuck's sake, she caves to Pomni's suggestion to act differently IMMEDIATELY, and also feels immediately like she overdoes it - she doesn't know what she's doing or where the lines are because she has no practice. This is not a manipulator.

Anyone with a healthy, adult understanding of interpersonal relationships, emotions, coping mechanisms, and just people in general is going to be more sympathetic towards Ragatha than Jax, but there are a bunch of kids in the fandom who are not intellectually equipped to process or coherently discuss what's in the show. Especially since episode 5 didn't have a clear, concise resolution that told them what the "moral" was.

This isn't a litmus test of what the writers have accomplished so much as it's a rather bleak demonstration of how young and immature huge chunks of the fandom are.
