They're actually historically called Persian donuts, they come from Canada and they've evolved into different things.
Now cinnamon rolls were originally brought by some Europeans more specifically the sweedes.
The difference is that cinnamon rolls have the frosting on top and are more bread like and Persian donuts/Honey Buns are dunked and then coated with the frosting and melts more in your mouth and are more wet than a cinnamon roll.
I'm not a fan of honeybuns because it leaves some weird shit stuck at the top of my mouth.
It's confusing because both cinnamon rolls and Persian donuts are made in similar ways.

Like if you some of their posts/art about it, you'd think it was some huge project coming soon like I did for a moment, but it was just hyperfixation. Also a lot of the momentum was bolstered by FNF creators getting in on it en masse and making a little mod subgenre .

There is quite a big difference level of resource demand between TADC and something massive like Pibby. TADC is popular, sure, but its still an indie series that pays itself with youtube views, selling merch and taking the deals to allow streaming services to feature the series in their catalogue.
Pibby in the other hand would been broadcasted in TV, that very same TV that has been in decline for the better part of a decade. The merch might sale, sure, but it won't be enough for the astronomical demand for crossover characters and legal paperwork Pibby demands.
Warner Brothers can send millions of dollars to burn but NOT for something like this weird ass pet project from an Idea Guy that barely knows how he plans to end his "grand" story.

The concept itself isn't (completely) the issue, it was the execution that really made this come off as cynical and ironic. All ideas in the world live and die whether their execution is good or not and Dodge Greenley over here didn't really know how to execute his ideas very well and that made Pibby feel really unprofessional and disjointed on a technical level.
Also it help that Dodge, despite of all his enthusiasm and love for his pet project, fell into the unfortunate state of "creator's first big project" and didn't know how to manage with that, at all. He had hundreds of ideas and dozens of different ways to execute them, he had all this power and potential in his hand but he wanted ALL of them which spelled doom for a project this ambitious and risky, which is why things like Kingdom Hearts 1 has cut content that didn't made it to the final release due to lack of time and not bloating the game.

Pibby just came out at the wrong time and wrong place. If the short come out like around the 2000's this would been a really different story.

The thing that intrigues me the most is that you could tell this very same story about a preeteen girl from a preschool show getting stalked by a unknown evil that wrecks her show so she goes around jumping from show and show looking for a way to end the nightmare and growing up along the way but without crossover elements at all, like just using expies and parody could get the job done just fine or even better than the original thing they are based on.
