Why did it flop? Antz and The Prince of Egypt proved in 1998 that you didn't need the Disney logo or well-known characters to be successful, so why didn't audiences went to see this movie in 1999?

We've been over this a billion fucking times, WB didn't promote it for fuckall and most people weren't even aware it was in theaters. Like a month ago some anon even said he only saw it in theaters at the time by pure happenstance and that his parents weren't even aware it was a movie until they were literally at the theater and saw the poster. It made its money back because of reruns and DVD rentals and apparently its re-screening a while back did really well too.

I remember some ads but not a lot. Honestly like people said the VHS and DVDs were everywhere and even Cartoon Network had a dedicated day where it ran nothing but The Iron Giant a few years after it's release

>Space Jam
>Beavis & Butt-Head Do America
>Anastasia
>Antz
>The Rugrats Movie
>The Prince of Egypt
>South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

Only western animation 90s movies that did well at the box office without having the Disney logo. Everything else flopped.

The Iron Giant opened up during a MASSIVE summer movie season:

>Phantom Menace, Wild Wild West

>Austin Powers 2, Big Daddy, Bowfinger, American Pie

>Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project, The Haunting, Deep Blue Sea, Lake Placid

>Notting Hill, Runaway Bride, Mickey Blue Eyes

>Eyes Wide Shut, Thomas Crown Affair, Summer of Sam

>South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut

>Disney's Tarzan, Inspector Gadget, Muppets from Space

It was not possible for every movie to find an audience in the theaters that summer. Too much competiton

Back when movies were at their peak. What a shame this has all led to.

Maybe don't separate movie titles with commas when one of the movies has a comma in the title.

Are they at least less incompetent now than they were 26 years ago?

I still very much admire Brad Bird as a filmmaker, but I lost some reverence for him after learning The Iron Giant wasn't a wholly original concept from the guy but rather based on some novel.

I guess. I knew about it and so did a lot of the kids in my class and we all went to see it in theaters as well as bought the VHS. I remember a kid in my class even brought the little figurine that came with it in for show and tell

Flop's the wrong word.
Yes, it cost either $50M (if you accept the industry reporting at the time) or $70M, if you believe that iMDB or Box Office Mojo can get accurate facts - which most idiots here always claim to be wrong, so there's that.
And yes, it made less than either $50M or $70M - so not a success is accurate.
But movies don't get released in a vacum - and even if people here (and elsewhere) complain about things like fast food cross-promotions with animated movies, or toy marketing with animated movies, or song selections - particularly hip hop since at least the early days of Dreamworks - in promoting animated movies that have nothing to do with street or urban or similar activities where hip hop or rap would be particularly appropriate, in spite all of that bitching and moaning, that's what makes people aware that movies are out there and exist.
Again - they don't get released in a vacuum. People might see trailers in front of another movie - but not every trailer gets put in front of every movie, etc.

I'm pretty sure I saw Notting Hill and probably the Thomas Crown Affair in theaters because friends would have wanted to see them. I saw Tarzan twice because I saw it by myself and then, when I invited/treated a friend, it was what he wanted to see.
Sadly, I probably allowed myself to be dragged to Wild Wild West. And maybe even Austin Powers. But I may have also just seen the home release of those, as was the case with Sixth Sense and South Park, Gadget and sadly Muppets.

But have never have seen 11 of these, including Phantom Menace.
But then again, I only saw The Iron Giant in theaters during the Fanthom re-release a few years back. And I'm a big enough fan of the film today to have even bought several of the toys.
