Did the first Sonic design look like shit? Absolutely, I agree 100% it was a miscalculation. But the "solution" that emerged established a pathetic industry precedent that doesn't only affect miscalculations and mistakes; it encroaches onto the basic divergence component involved in originality and vision. It creates a "safety" net that potentially filters anything that strays beyond the demonstrably paper-thin area of confort beyond the average consumer's expectations.

And that's of course made even worse because of the basic human conceit, nurtured by social media, that rejecting something outright somehow involves more personality and insight than accepting something outright.

No, it doesn't. The third movie is the that actively sucks. Shadow wasn't all that great. Knuckles had a way better introduction and satisfactory ending with the Hero Team all coming together to save the day. And Sonic goes Super at the end. Really, all I did to like this movie was skip over all of the scenes that didn't involve Sonic. I was nothing but Sonic+Tales+Knuckles+Eggman and his little assistant until they warped to Hawaii at the end of the film. And that was just spectacular for me. Because I do not care about human characters in Sonic and never, ever will.

Robotnick is a human and people love him, whether it's the Jim Carrey incarnation or not. Remember they changed Robotnick's design to be more similar to the game version too. 2 had its faults but I liked that they reduced the human characters (and did so even further in 3) and let Sonic and Tails just interact on their own for a bulk of the movie. It also was a pretty good re-telling of Sonic 3. Also, while I liked the third movie the two Robotniks gag was taken a bit too far in some places and the second movie balances its comedy much better. The first movie is still the worst of the three. 2 and 3 both tried to adapt plots from the games and I think they both distilled things pretty well but movie 1 will always be another bland "cartoon character in the real world zany road trip movie" in a sea of them. Though I think its better than most of its contemporaries.

I think the thing I like about the Sonic movies though are they're solid live-action kid movies that feel sincere and are thus better than the usual slop tossed at kids these days.

OK, I'm going to pitch an idea here on the off chance some hack intern sees it and am encouraging them to steal it. Here we go:

Have the movie be about Shrek wanting his kids out of the house so he and Fiona can enjoy their golden years. It's completely in-character and an in-universe reason for him to feel that way despite all his character development. His daughter is the last kid at home and she hasn't found her "thing" yet, so Shrek decides she needs to go on an adventure to figure it out. Whether or not some inciting incident falls into their laps is up to you, but he, Donkey, and maybe Puss take her on an adventure, maybe have a fight and heart to heart at some point and then she finds herself by the end. Maybe Shrek decides he'll miss her too much and tells her she can stay in the swamp, too, by the end idk. But that's your set up. Use it, it will work, everyone will like it.

Could be a way to work into the original idea proposed by Katzenberg, which was vague, but mentioned the HOW Shrek wound up in in the swamp in the first place. While the third and fourth movie didn't really give us much beyond suggesting Shrek's life with his ogre parents wasn't all that memorable, it could be worked into the narrative. Shrek wants his kids to have that same journey and being able to make a place of their own, but given he's softer than other ogres thanks to Fiona, he's not adverse to the idea of them coming back to visit. Perhaps it's just the Sonic comparisons that are rubbing me the wrong way; "Ugly Sonic" was just that, ugly. The movie would have been significantly worse if they kept it, whether this was the first Sonic appearance ever or not (they probably wouldn't have changed it had it been the first appearance, but I digress)
Nu-Shrek is not Ugly Sonic. It still has appeal, and IMO has more appeal than the original design.

Either will be fairly tough given the Shrek series left on a very divisive note with Forever After, even with the success of the second Puss movie improving some people's attitude about DreamWorks. You are not very smart. The marketing team did this on purpose to replicate the hype that the Sonic debacle generated, and that too was a marketing ploy.

Now everyone will talk about the '"fixed" designs when they release the "real" trailer. This is all very obvious and overt IMO.

Really the only way to do Shrek 5 is make it a Toy Story 3-esque send-off to the character or something in the vein of The Last Wish. Maybe even make it a potshot at Disney's live-action remakes with Shrek and others solving a scheme that involves replacing fairy tale characters with nightmarish clones of them.
Dreamworks has gone on to have numerous other IPs and the character is pretty much a joke now anyway.

One can hope they're able to deliver something nearly as good as last wish, but can never be too sure since their other big series like KFP seems to be getting worse and worse with each new sequel.
The live-action jab seems like a fun idea, since they could poke fun at the muscial (and maybe even joke about the movies typically ending with dance numbers), and just keep it at that rather than going through all the Shrek memes as is the present plot theory.
