I decided to binge all of Homestuck recently. The ending wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be. I mean obviously it was rushed but that was going to happen to matter what for something this long.

You could really see the shadow of the fandom start to be cast wider and wider over the series around the start of act 6. People have said that you shouldn't let the fandom of something affect your enjoyment of the work but when the fandom affects the work so much I think you kinda have to.

Overall its an incredibly unique piece of fiction that I think has worth just from its impact on the internet and experiment use of the medium. But I dont think I would call it 'good' or 'well written' or 'relatively coherent'

Lord English is by no means "a normal part of the game", he's a closed loop with himself due to Caliborn being so intimately intertwined with the Alpha and Beta sessions. Because god tier judgement has a delay, her death (unrelated to her turning back into a ghost) was declared just and so she died again as a ghost. So that's why she's not around in the story. In a more meta sense, Aranea represents a Vriska who didn't learn her lesson. While Ghost Vriska learned that she didn't need to be important anymore, Aranea doomed everyone by trying to become the most important player. So as karmic punishment, the comic itself rejects her and takes every bit of relevance from her, which is why they don't even say her name after game over

Poorly. I never tried to use the actual rulesets or homebrews made for Sburb and tried to use a more mechanically simplistic game (FATE) but it lacked some of the video game crunchiness that I think is important to Homestuck's feel.

The worldbuilding and classpect parts are absolute kino but it runs into a lot of problems when people are free to do what they want; Sburb's jungian archetypes and passive/active stuff is cool (as well as literally having time/space manipulation) but only really works in a linear narrative where you control things.

CHADkat nabbed a winner.

Been rereading with a friend who hasn't read it before. I warned him that the quality peaks in Act 5 and goes down from there, but we're on Act 6 Intermission 2 & so far I've been enjoying Act 6 more than I expected. Hell, when I look ahead at A6 A3 I'm excited bc there's so much great shit coming like Dirk: Unite & Synchronize & Caliborn.

But we just got to Aranea, and like when I first read it, my friend's started feeling alienated by the story. Then when I look further ahead, I'm legit dreading almost everything post-retcon. Like, Vriska is one of my favorite characters, but the way she just becomes a complete Mary-Sue in Act 6 Act 6 Act 5 is just so awful. Everyone other than John, Roxy, & Caliborn gets their character development completely thrown away after thousands of pages getting invested in them for the sake of narrative convenience. It's one of the most disappointing things I've ever experienced in a work of fiction, especially after how incredible Cascade is

The writing becomes fanfiction levels of bad in so many places only to then become literal terrible fanfiction in the epilogues/BC. They're so cringe and horrible to the point of being unreadable. It seems like that's the point and like it exists as an endurance/loyalty gauntlet to weed out all but the most diehard fans who want it to just continue no matter what. It's so bad that it made me forget how good the comic is in the first 5 acts, and things have been so good up til now in the reread I gradually forgot they get that bad until confronting it this past week. It gets so bad it taints all of act 6 in my mind. Idk why I'm writing this bc nobody cares, but I just wish the story got the conclusion it deserved. This seemed to be the consensus when the comic ended, but nowadays I mostly see people acting like it's genius, much like people who say that the star wars prequels are actually masterpieces. I don't get it at all

It wouldn't have been easy, no, but it wasn't completely hopeless yet either, especially given that Bro and Davesprite seemed to have had the upper hand on a 3x prototyped Jack, so a non-First Guardian fourth prototyping wouldn't have been instant death like it was through Vriska's meddling.
Jack's also not that hard to find since he made no effort to stay hidden, just follow the trail of destruction and you'll find him soon enough. Even PM could do it.

The worst part of all the relationship drama is that virtually none of it has a satisfying conclusion. Like the story makes a statement about speed running personal issues with the candy stuff and then turns around and does that anyway with Vriska no Retcon Jitsu. Its actually really funny how the relationships that have no chemistry are the ones that last and the ones that do have chemistry just disintegrate for no reason
But more importantly are the dozens of character relationships that the story spends time establishing that go nowhere. I guess it was an inevitability with a cast this large but that doesn't make it good

Pesterquest is a lot more hit and miss but is still fun and worth checking out (after Friendsim, it's a direct sequel and expects you to have done all Friendsim endings). Helltier Vriska has only done like 3 things so far because we've only had two updates with her (3 if we count the flash page in which she first appeared). The only thing she has retconned so far is deliver the letters Meat John wrote but never delivered (which is a plot thread so insignificant that legit nobody has ever talked about it but I mean, valid to bring it up again). For some unholy reason this caused Meat Jane and Jake to be on the ship chasing Ult Dirk (which they weren't before). This gets... confusing when we look at Catnapped, a bonus story about Jasprosesprite^2 kidnapping Meat Jane to make her less evil and racist. During the Vriska VN, Jasprose actually calls Davepeta, who is basically doing the same thing with Vriska (and are seemingly working towards the same goal). So Catnapped is still canon. But then... if Vriska somehow changed fate and retconned Meat, then... wouldn't catnapped NOT happen? Because that happened in the pre-retcon Meat timeline.. But it can't be a different post-retcon Catnapped storyline because Jasprose is clearly aware of the retcon bullshit so... uhhh. Idk man, this shit is confusing. Long story short, the writers wanted Jake and Jane on the ship crew and used Vriska to *somehow* make it happen. Not really. In the original comic, it was always a main plot point that retcon powers don't magically make pre-retcon timelines cease to exist. They just end up becoming an alternate timeline and no longer the main alpha one.

For example, when John finished his entire retcon quest following Terezi's instructions in the original comic, after doing everything he finally went to find Pre-Retcon Roxy so they could arrive together in the new Post-Retcon timeline. John's Retcon Adventures didn't magically make that Roxy from that Pre-Retcon timeline cease to exist.

In the Pre-Retcon Timeline there is still Ult Dirk and that Calliope. Given the level of power they've reached, I doubt they can't perceive the new timelines and have some desire to intervene. Multiple Ult Dirks created by Vriska creating new timelines sounds like a problem. So maybe they'll need that Jane's help later in the story.

I don't think the "Players create themselves as ectoclone babies" is a universal thing. Remember, Sburb-sessions only have what is required of them, no more and no less. Like, the A1 and B1 sessions have scratch-constructs because those sessions are the only ones that need it so while from our perspective it looks like a pretty essential element, no other session in the troll or human universe has them. Same with the paradox babies, the kids and the trolls might be the only one to have that concept because "closed timeloop about important characters being born" is VERY essential to these sessions and these sessions ALONE because no other group of players is as tied to the alpha timeline and Caliborn's birth as them
