The fact that pic is an official thing sanctioned and approved by nitro+ still boggles my mind.
If it was a rippoff like, say, Diessel, i would have an easier time wrapping my head around it. But it has fucking nitro+ website in the first page.

Another Tokyopop one but they really went all in on Van Von Hunter despite the original webcomic being incredibly obscure. Three original graphic novels and a really cheap movie.

Also I'm not sure what volume it is but the back of one of the Hayate the Combat Butler volumes makes a reference to Shortpacked of all fucking things.

Tokyopop put out a ton of OEL manga stuff in the period between 2000 - 2010. A lot of it just wasn't very good and a lot of it never got completed.

Tokyopop had a Rising Stars of Manga competition where they were trying to find new OEL talent. They aggressively tried to push "I Luv Halloween.' Even though it wasn't very good.

I actually liked Last Hope, I read it at Barnes and Noble or Borders or something. I remember one of those girls had an energy drink addiction. The series ended at 2 volumes and was never concluded with a third.

I remember liking Destiny's Hand. Seven Seas put out a lot of pirate themed OEL manga in their early days, and Destiny's Hand actually managed to complete all 3 volumes of the story.
Anonymous No.149997943

I picked it up on a whim, I think. I'll always associate it with Summer 2005, along with the og Halo book trilogy, Gundam SEED, and DDR techno/Eurobeat (there was definitely a technofuturistic theme going). Simple story and the art was almost too clean, but I liked the characters and wanted to see where the dimension-hopping gimmick was going to go. Weirdly, the artist is still going.

I feel like I have to check out Destiny's Hand, if it's just 3 volumes and actually completed. Thx.

And I gotta wonder where SS was pulling all these people who were JUST hanging off the ledge on the other side of the "actually real manga" uncanny valley.

There's just something very... authentic about the Tokyopop OEL mangas. The range really is a window into how the early weeaboos of the 2000s Western anime boom, the time from the creation of Toonami to the 2007 Geneon crash, really thought and reflected the media that they were consuming.

I really liked My Last Summer with Cass though. I read it twice. It doesn't feel like Amerimanga, it feels like it's own thing and it has a touching story. In general, I'm not a huge fan of OEL manga set in Japan, because the author usually only understand about Japan from manga and will always be an outsider.
