Cardcaptor Sakura is genuinely one of the most consistently beautiful animation projects ever made, which is impressive given a runtime of 72 episodes. Its very much a product of its time, CLAMP studio at the height of their budget and talent just flexing their skills in traditional animation in its final years before computers and digital animation started to muscle in on the medium.
Its obviously a show for children, but that doesn't make it bad. The characters are endearing, the structure of the show is novel, its funny, the card puzzles/powers are interesting, and obviously it just looks damn good. Every faux-anime magical girl thing that you see modern western animators try to sneak past Disney execs just to fall flat on their face because its all too cynical or convoluted or lame? Cardcaptor Sakura is the idea show they remember and they wish they could make, inspired by it but not skilled enough to copy it.
