Oh yeah, I just watched it a few minutes ago.

I appreciate the creativitiy in the art and sound. All the texture and detail and the interesting way they depict some things (I really like how they show the transition to the characters' thoughts) shows that the people making this tried to make something good which is always cool. The music and sound effects were fun too. I can say that clearly, this was made by someone with a bit of taste.

The writing felt authentic but in a bad way. I feel like I could imagine the exact type of person who would relate to this. If you watched this, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Chronically online. Leftist. Gets into arguments on Twitter. It's a specific kind of person that you see everywhere online. They always have this specific way of talking, even if they're not talking about politics or whatever. I could just see that type of person behind every line. Just to clarify - this is not me seething. I'm just disappointed because I feel like I've seen all this before. It just doesn't feel fresh or interesting to me.

Ideally, a work of art should present an interesting point of view - and this pilot shows a point of view I'm pretty tired of.

Also, some of the lines feel a bit too blunt - I really didn't like the Reddit jokes. They felt very "written". Also, one of the characters literally says "I'm having such a bad day!". And I get that they needed to quickly communicate that information but I feel the writers could have done it more elegantly.

I think this cartoon just wasn't "clever" enough, if that makes sense? The writing wasn't absolutely horrible but it felt inelegant and inexperienced. The ending was supposed to be a bit emotional I think but it just felt artificial, a bit too sudden. It made me feel like the writers wanted me to feel something, which just annoyed me.

Overall, I'd say this has potential. The art is fun and the writing has the potential to get better.

This looks like it was animated by SVA kids. Don't know why, but it has a certain look. That's not a bad thing, but I'm curious to know if I'm right.

The audio needs a lot of work. The actors also need to pep up their performance. It's a little too deadpan for this style of animation and coupled with the awkward pacing and bad audio, it was really hard to stay invested. I don't think the actors need to go full on Looney Tunes, but being a little more dynamic wouldn't hurt. They need to be a touch extra to push the illusion of life. Sounds like they were sitting while recording (and maybe speaking softly to avoid waking up roomates?). To get better breath support, they should try standing. It also might help get them to be a touch more animated in their performance if they're not falling asleep in their chair. The foxy mean girl was probably the worst. I get that to some degree the deadpan was a part of the disaffected character, but when she's teasing the MC there was no sense of joy in the cruelty. The character animation was good, though.

The dialog needs to be compressed a bit to help level out the dips in volume. The EQ needs a bit of a bump in the upper end to get some of the consonants to sound more articulate too. Some of the dialog sounds like it was recorded over zoom or something (like 0:30). I can't tell if that is just bad ADR because it's not every line of that character (otherwise I'd assume everything was recorded remotely and that specific actor had a bad setup).

There are also a lot of clashes with the dialog. Like at 0:54 there's a squashy sound right as the character says "what". I have no idea why that sound is even there. If they were trying to catch the characters slight movement, there are other sounds that could have been used that wouldn't have clashed, but at the very least, the SFX should have been sidechained to the dialog so it would get out of the way.

There's also a lot of drums in the music that clashes with the dialog. Heavy percussion can be used for montage sequences or action, but when characters are talking the music needs to stay out of the fucking way. The music is fun and quirky, but it sounds like it would work better as standalone tracks than a score. Oddly enough, the part that has the most subdued percussion is at the very end when characters aren't speaking and we get a wide shot of the city on fire. That's exactly when heavier drums could have taken over.

In general, I think the punky animation style works and I like the rough/sketchy looking character designs. It feels like an animated zine which seems intentional. The actual visual elements of this short are the best parts of it, but I think they could use a better audio team, tighter editing of the radio play, and either actors with more experience working for animation or a good VA Director to help coach better performances.

Overall, I think this could be really good! I hope they iron out some of these issues.

I agree with this, and the other critiques. I actually don't mind if this one has a few flaws, it seems like it's just establishing the characters. One is very clearly obsessed with staying relevant and cares about what other people think, another clearly has hit a real rough patch in their life and is deeply insecure, the other is an art student who's likely struggling with building herself as an artist. Those are characters you can build from. The city they're in seems like a place they can build out, and doesn't feel like "Anyplace, USA". I'd give it a few episodes to start building something, I think it's worth following.

it's strange since the schools don't actually teach a specific style. CalArts doesn't have classes on beanmouth just as SVA doesn't have classes on scribbly UPA influenced zine art, yet there seems to be a different "flavor" of art that comes from the East Coast. yeah, I think she taught comic arts or something. It seems like a lot of people who graduate from NY schools in general end up coming back as adjunct faculty. In Gran's case, at least she had some success on her own before coming back to teach. It's really weird when someone who has been in school straight through their masters degree and has never really worked on real-world projects gets a university gig almost right after graduating. Maybe I'm thinking too much like a geographer here, but SVA's campus is right in the middle of lower Manhattan, near a variety of different neighborhoods where alternative communities congregate and bump up against each other. There's a value to these groups in having that sort of alternative flair that feels punk and underground. CalArts is not in LA proper and feeds major employers like Disney, who prefer more standard and marketable art and art style rather than something that "shakes things up.
Also, worth noting that SVA grads IJQ and Rebecca Sugar had to go more "bean" when they went West, so maybe SVA grads have to shed their "East Coast" nature to make it big out West?

I'd imagine it has less to do with geography and more to do with the demands of the industry. It's easier to animate so you'll have few mistakes from the overseas animation teams, but also the execs who greenlight things are imaginationless dickheads. This is something I've noticed with a ton of slice-of-life indie shows, especially ones involving wagies, furries, and/or the early 2000's. Jokes often come out in extremely unnatural and forced ways. There's no banter, no chemistry, so they deliver some one-liner on the level of a mediocre newspaper comic. Mission Hill had thirteen proper episodes, and there was some storyboarded episodes you can find on YouTube from the DVD. And there are some scripts you can find as well. Mission Hill was peak.

Mission Hill, Undergrads and Clone High were a part of the "Teletoon Detour" adult animation block. Kind of like a Canadian Adult Swim. A gang of three classic shows are grouped together and doomed to only have 13 episodes.

The creators of Mission Hill really want to make more episodes but it's a bitch trying to get the rights back. They have flirted with the idea of making a comic book but don't think it's a money-making idea. Like ofcourse, they aren't in it for the money but they got bills to pay. Honestly, a Mission Hill comic book would be so peak. The style is already inspired by gritty underground comic books anyways (maybe I am not describing the style perfectly, but my point is it's inspired by a type of comic book art, so it would feel right at home on the page.)

But it started with the strongest for comedy (visual gags, references, joke layers, it clearly had the most work done in that regard) then went for the strongest for relatability (even if you don't relate, it was the most human one) an then closed with whatever. It should had been 3-1-2. Start with the set up for the climax, then the jokes, then the emotions, and then close the set up after the emotional part.

good writers are like good illustrators. Both put in the work honing their craft, refining their technique, and care enough about their creations to keep working them over until all the details are properly addressed.
It's just easier to quickly assess a drawing. Your eye can get an overview really fucking quickly and figure out if it's worth anything or not. If someone says they're an illustrator you can take a quick look at their instagram (or wherever they post stuff) and get an idea whether they are actually any good. If someone says they're a writer, you actually have to take the time to go through their work and most people don't want to do that so it's easier for them to slip through the cracks.

I don't think Ebsynth is technically AI, though. It works with very similar technology as algorithms that fake slow motion do where it interpolates pixel movement, but it's not "intelligent". You need to manually provide keyframes basically any time new info is added to the scene (a character turns and a part of them that was not previously visible can be seen or a new background element is revealed, etc).

The mix is dogshit, but the musician probably hides behind the fact that it's supposed to be lofi and kind of punky, which is supported by the MS paint style art that is slapped over all of his social media profiles. While that's probably true to a certain extent (and making a super slick radio friendly mix isn't the point), it also acts as a good excuse to never have to actually learn how to mix anything. If there was some semblance of consistency with the music from this project from intro to outro, The fact that the mix is all over the fucking place from cue to cue (and the intro and outro are compressed to absolute shit) makes me feel like this has less to do with artistic vision and more to do with someone who is too lazy to give a shit and just gets high and dicks around in Ableton Live.
Even then, that approach can work in some productions, but at some point in the audio pipeline SOMEONE has to know what the fuck they're doing. Wildcards need to be checked by nerds who know their shit and can make things work. In this case, we have a wildcard musician, a wildcard sound designer, and a wildcard person in charge of final mix (the roles may be blended and someone may be doing double or triple duty), but the point is that the audio sounds shitty because nobody in the pipeline actually has any expertise and everyone is flying by the seat of their pants.
Spellcasting - if you're reading this, learn to mix at low volumes. When you crank shit everything sounds good. When you turn stuff down the problems in your mix will be more exposed. Also, use reference mixes. You can do whatever you want creatively, but a good consistent reference will help anchor your ear to something tangible.

The character designs are incredibly awesome and the actual animation is really solid. It's limited, but handled extremely well where it never feels "economical" or "cheap". It feels appropriate which speaks volumes towards how well it was handled. The fact that people aren't complaining about it is a pretty big deal. The best you can hope for is that it isn't distracting and when it's handled properly, nobody will notice. I think the character designs and animation aren't lauded enough, but I see you.
The backgrounds and compositing fit the style - it's hard to judge that in something like this where less is more and over-flexing skills would feel distracting. I think that shows both remarkable ability and restraint. This was a failing of LSMark's "Catching Up". A lot of the pilot fell short, but then the compositing in the club scenes was WAY over the top and felt like putting lipstick on a pig.

I think there's some potential in the show idea overall, but the writing needs tightening up, the acting definitely needs to step up (holy fuck), the music/sound is absolute dogshit, and the pacing could be made a bit more punchy. I don't know if Izzy edited the radio play, but the writer should never be the one to do that since they are prone to believing that the written lines will hold up on their own. They won't, and some things need to move along quicker. Ideally whoever times the radio play and/or animatic should be someone who wasn't privy to the earlier creative process so they can approach timing with a fresh perspective and rely on their narrative instincts.

But fuck me, the audio is bad. I know every dickhead with a microphone is an audio engineer these days, but I think the audio in general REALLY lets this down.

fight scenes are difficult and expensive to animate. It's part of the reason why 90% of Dragon Ball Z is standing around and checking power levels - they needed to save the budget so they could blow most of it on the little action they had.
Indies don't have anywhere near the same sort of budget mainstream shows have, so high action stuff like that would either be prohibitively expensive, or it would take for fucking ever since the creator would essentially need to animate every sequence with multiple characters interacting with physics by themselves one at a time. If you've never animated before this probably doesn't seem like that big a deal but suffice to say that it is.

it's very hard to have 5 dudes working on a single sequence, it would shift from section to section. With slice of life you don't notice, but something that has complex movement would stand out like crazy. Keyframes have to be made by a single person and even if they are working extra hours with a great pay and they love life (none of which apply to nekketsu) it will take time to get it done.
You do have some wunderkin that can shit out usable keyframes at 10x speed because every medium has autists like that, but they are either useless in every other aspect of life tying them to a corporation or obscurity, or they are guns for hire that can pick what job to do when if they want to work at all.

I hate it when writers make their characters frontload their issues in order to make me care about them. I don't know anything about these characters outside of them being miserable for having a bad day, so why should I care about them? Hell, are they only friends with each other because they're constantly having bad days with their first world problems? I feel like six minutes just isn't enough to work for what they're going for. Either extend they should've extented this more than six minutes in order to show off the characters more or use that six minutes more efficiently by keeping the dialogue brief, yet informative.
