They look off because there is no real foundation beneath it all. The show is entirely built on other cartoons like Fairly Oddparents, instead of being a creative abstraction of something that exists IRL.
To really make an interesting cartoon setting, you need to be influenced by something that isn't just cartoons. Spongebob is a good example, which was built on the creators interest in marine life. You could argue that Mark has such an influence as well, but "urban teenage social life woes" just isn't a compelling foundation and shows his lack of life experience as a young, sheltered city dweller.

Literally all of those creators you mentioned had built-in audiences before they released their indie stuff, hence the success. It takes time. They got their start in their 20s, and now they're in their 30s or older and are finally successful.

Piggyback off of others' success. Make fan art or fan animations of existing properties to get an audience, then release your original works. Just make sure the fan art you do is tonally similar to your original works. If you're making fan art of a comedy show, don't be surprised if your original work doesn't do well if it's a dark and serious story.

I get what you mean though. I'm a fellow artist and it's rough out here. I'm sick of going online and seeing dipshits squawking about how "going indie" is the solution to the animation industry. It's super naive.

I think to myself about this often. A lot of young guys got absolutely nuked by easy youtube fame. The bar for online content is so low that you can spend your entire life shitting out the equivalent of a well-done highschool presentation and get by. The constant praise from countless people probably doesn't help. There's more examples to it but Mark is not skilled at anything aside from youtube videos right now. He is only 20, but from his perspective there isn't anything to change. His life is perfect as is even though he isn't trying as hard as he could be and still reaping all the rewards.
