If they are missing the point of fiction so bad, then they weren't fit to be writers in the first place.

I think everyone agrees that it was fun and useful around 2011 or so. Then they made up too damn many tropes, most of which only had a single example at best. Then the place became too overcrowded with too many people making too many edits. And has since only become a place for people to look and awe at the weaponized autism ever after.

All The Tropes is too strict though due to the "All edits most be approved by the mods rule" and it's a ghost town as a result.

Tropedia is actually quite active but has few users and it contains all the pages that were cut due to the censorship issues. If you can stomach Fandom/wiki, it's a great alternative.

To be fair, people leaning into tropes happened before Tv Tropes became big enough to matter, it just made it worse.
The site's not super useful and everyone there has some form of autism, but I at least get some mileage out of knowing that we, the chads with SFW fetishes like inflation and pregnancy, can use TvT as a way to find more content regarding those fetishes.

Well, to put this way, academics that analyze fictional works tend to explain items from fiction in general terms "tropes", "themes", "motifs", "archetypes", etc.

Tvtropes doesn't really do that, it's lumps all the above into "tropes". Then it takes a "trope", like "badass" and splits that off in to bunch of semi related tropes with a twist!. Then we get things like "bad grandpa", "badass cutie", or "bad cripple". It comes off like a bit autistic.

I think it's like that because the founder, Fast Eddie/Gus Raley is a computer programmer. He didn't think like a humanities major.

I despise how Tv Tropes users justifies deleting pages for "violating" their content violation policy but pages like Made in Abyss and Cuties stay. It's a blatant display of their biases.

It's also funny how they locked the Content Violations Review from being viewed by unregistered users and no longer warned pages that they are subjected to being reviewed.

Quite possibly to prevent people from archiving those pages and moving the content to the fork wikis.

I stopped wasting time on TVTropes back when they let some obviously butthurt shipper re-write the entire Endtown page to suit his hate-boner for the comic. It went from a basic look at the comic and related tropes to being a short summary of the plot and then a lot of insults about the comic and the creator. Last I checked, those edits were still in place.
No point in seeking information in a website that's just the opinions of the most autistic fans.

A cliché is a trope that's been overused to the point it's lazy and unimaginative to use it in writing. A "trope" is just anything that's appeared more than once in fiction. But you're right that people get them confused, often in the really stupid way of thinking every trope is a cliché and therefore all writing is bad because everything contains "tropes".

They're neither a good thing or a bad thing. They're just a thing. Joseph Campell, when he wrote his book wasn't making a statement it was an observation about humanities nature. I think it was Tolkien who, when he did his Beowulf translation, complained that so many critics were too busy trying to critique the story that they forgot how to read it. They didn't see the story for what it was because they were focused on analyzing it and taking it apart for cultural significance. This is the most offensive issue with things like TV Tropes and Cinema Sins. They warped a generation into over analyzing a work before they actually experience it. They go in ready to jump at any "trope" they know without minding the context surrounding it. Without letting the story tell itself. We have a whole group of people, obsessed with proving their own genre savvy that it feels like they're actively in a competition with it. They go out of the way to guess twists then call it predictable if they're right. They're obsessed with seeing an end even if they miss the journey. It's complete disengagement.

This is why people liken it to trainspotting and why so many of the people heavily invested in the idea of "tropes" are autistic. They can just say
>I recognise that trope!
like a railfan who's happy when he can identify a train he sees. It's about taking pride in the recognition of something they're familiar with rather than any deeper human identification with the characters, themes or narrative as a whole.

The thing is, like being a railfan I don't think there's anything wrong with it in itself. But trope recognition is not something any normal person engages in when experiencing a narrative story. They're there for the emotions it makes them feel, the investment in the characters and their stories. Like can you imagine if it was say, an encyclopedia listing what songs featured particular chords and time signatures? I imagine the reaction of most music listeners to that would be
>who the fuck cares? I just enjoy the songs
which is the same reaction most people would have to being informed something is a trope. Or that the train they're riding is being hauled by a GE Dash 8-32BWH. If you're into that, fine. But it doesn't actually say anything about the quality of something or anyone's enjoyment of it.

That did get annoying. Especially if something was flavor of the week. It was also annoying how they HAVE to make a Crowning Moment of Funny/Awesome/Tearjerker page for EVERY show just to make it. Even if something is the first episode.

I swear, a show about a kid with a teddy bear going to play in their backyard could get:
> Tearjerker
> Timmy has a stuffed bear, he plays with which means he might not have any friends. Ouch.
> Timmy is friends with Sally, but that gets one wondering if he's only friends with Sally because he HAS the bear to practice on first. If someone had taken the bear away from him, he might not have ever met Sally in the first place. This Troper needs a moment...

>Crowning Moment of Heartwarming
When Timmy said Hi to Sally AND SHE SAID HI BACK!

> Crowning Moment of Awesome
> Timmy and Sally running around his backyard in a circle in what can only be described as an Epic Fun Time.

> Crowning Moment of Funny
> When Timmy tripped and fell on his BUTT. Talk about a gut buster

> Nightmare Fuel
> What if this show had a bit of a darker tone? This Troper barely slept last night thinking about how Timmy's fall might not have been such a minor event in some other shows. *shiver*

> Dethroning Moment of Suck
When Timmy's Mom said they had to come in for a snack break

> Truth In Television
> Children are still growing, and often need healthy snacks to recoup their energy from playtime. Timmy's Mom might have interrupted their playtime, but she showed she was a MoralGuardian and possibly WiseBeyondHerYears by doing so. Perhaps even bordering on StealthMentor.

The problem was the mods are busy with RL stuff to watch the site and there are too few of them to check. It's made worse by tropers adding in pages for non existent works. That pushed back the wait time from I think was few days to week to waiting three weeks is any changes any user made. Still, it made the mods seem overly paranoid about new users. Anon, go read the TVtropes page for your favourite book. Go read the pages for some of the most highly regarded books in the English language. I guarantee they all contain multiple tropes because a "trope" is literally just anything that's appeared in fiction more than once. It's fucking meaningless.

That's your problem there, really. The entire Jap LN/anime adaptation industry is based on churning out the same shit they know sells. So people keep writing the same tired shit and the corpos keep picking it up. Because people keep buying it. I dunno how you fix that, but it's not the fact that tropes are simply present in all fiction which is the problem, that's what I'm saying.

It's the same mindset as people who think AI can write their story for them. You are going to have to draw from something more personal than just other people's collective knowledge if you want to make something special. That does not mean write your life story with a thin veneer of fantasy like a recent Pixar movie, but it does mean you have to be creative and have inspiration. You can't expect to find success just by copying and remixing from an index of things that other people have made like a DJ. That mindset is what gets you millennial writing.

Picrel is a list of banned phrases from the writing room at Workaholics. You've probably seen all of them in badly written "funny" shows and movies, and heard them in casual conversations. When people engage in cannibalistic writing they inevitably start copying from things that were already copied from somewhere else and it all starts breaking down, just like an AI starts breaking down when it starts copying other AI.

Have you ever read about THE SEVEN BASIC PLOTS. If you break things down far enough nothing is or will ever be completely 100 percent original. But you shouldn't be focused so blindly on making something new as you should quality. Everything has been done before long before the modern age but that doesn't mean you can't still be unique in other ways.

No it's not, you illiterate. That so many stories overlap is incidental not intentional. Nobody is looking at their story outline like it's a baking recipe and seeing "this calls for a cup of TROPE X, a pinch of TROPE Y and stirred with TROPE Z." When Tolkien had Frodo come home but feel out of place that wasn't because he was doing it as a trope, it was because he had real life experience and felt that way. Because it was something that happens and after everything that happened it made sense for his character.

The best thing to come out of TVTropes was Troper Tales, because it gave us all perfect clarity into the type of turbo autist supremes who contributed to the terrible articles and came up with the awful slang names for tropes they tried to invent. People point at the Japanese shit but a lot of western cartoons are just as bad. They're almost always going to have the same highschool clique drama that really hasn't existed in decades or some annoying bullshit drama about relationships and crushes. The only difference is that while Japan will have their feckless pud hero being the object of vacuous bimbos affections, western media will have their feckless pud of a hero barely be a blip on the radar of said vacuous bimbos.

George Lucas brought something personal to Star Wars that nobody else was able to replicate. He wanted watching the movie to feel like a religious experience, like what was happening on screen was something of biblical importance, and he succeeded. Even the more modern sources from which he was pulling inspiration, like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, had also fallen into obscurity by the time Star Wars came out because back then there was no home media, and people didn't cling on to old media the way they do today. Of course, Star Wars was such a big success that everyone immediately started trying to revive everything that Lucas was inspired by, from old sci-fi IPs to Greek mythology, although none of them were met with much success.

It's surprising how even taking the frame work of a story and changing the genre can give things it's own perspective. The Dollars movie series is pretty much just Kurosawa but, despite what lawyers might say, I think it does add a lot of uniqueness. Eastwood and Mifune were VERY different characters.
