You know, genderbending is less of a fetish and more of a tool for other fetishes. Bowsette is a good example, there’s tons of fanart of her, but it’s not so much that people liked the genderbend itself, it’s that they liked the idea of a Mario character with more personality than the milquetoast Peach and liked the design of this punk princess.

Other applications for example could be self inserting on a show as the protagonist, so you have show with a significant female fanbase having lots or R63 art with the protagonist as a girl that has that feminine nuance almost playing with dolls.

And then you have characters like Johnny Test who have a design so appealing you want to see more fanart of her.

I want to go a little meta and talk about female Johnny Test, why do you think is so popular? is it because is a canon scene in the show? I doubt that other shows had canon GB episodes and nobody remembers them. Maybe it was popularity or the fact that it came out of nowhere, but I personally think the reason why fem Johnny stuck is that is one of the few female character with an appealing design in that show. Compare it with show like Dexter lab or PPG and those show have a lot of attractive ladies, but JT lacked in that regard so people got attached to the one good design.

I think you narrowed it out a bit, so a popular design must be appealing, visually distinct but recognizable as the character. Do you think that is the winning formula or is ther more to it?

I don't think anyone has watched Johnny Test enough to know that, they're probably just aware of female Johnny because it happened in the very first episode, or because they saw someone else draw her. She's popular despite her show of origin or the lack of screen time.

Simple as that, nothing to do with other times it happened (as nobody gives a fuck about them) and nothing to do with how it compares with other characters. You guys come up with autistic reasonings, rather than the most simple and logical. Most people aren't deeply invested in Jonnhy fucking Test.

Maybe it could be like a cycle thing were the base form is the boy form and the 2 hero forms have different sets of powers so they are useful for different things, but turning into the male hero makes his regular form a girl for the rest of the day, and the Female hero form allows him to turn back to his regular self after the fight, but her set of powers are trickier to use properly and may not be effective in some situations.
This way he has to always things of the pros and cons of each transformation, not only for fighting but the consequences each will have after he fights.

If I may be of some help to keep this idea going, I would say the superpowers might be themed around the yin-yang concept.
The Yang hero is superstrong, superfast, maybe flies, has fire and wind powers, vut it consumes his yang ki, turning him into a girl when he goes back to civilian form.
The Yin heroine has some useful powers in water/ice and earth control, but instead of strength and speed she has more passive powers like illusions, empathy and... I dunno teleporting. But it consumes his Yin ki, so he turns into a man after using her.
And since they consume his ki, he can't just turn into the male hero then into the female superhero and always come back to his male civilian form, because that would leave him weakened, maybe can't use hero powers for a while, maybe even knock him out depending on how long he stayed on the female form.

I like both approaches cause they give an excuse for different situations. I feel like the normal school one would allow to have other non Genderbend characters interacting with the "boys". Honestly this will simply end in a cheerleader pic with my favorites anyway.
