I've never understood why -if they keep forcing them to reset to "Issue Number One" every few years anyway- why don't they just have the balls to take one of these characters and do runs of "stand alone continuity" storylines that begin at one and end when the comic is over, and isn't bound by overall brand synergy.

In the west, the ideas all come from editors and executives, who don't have a single creative bone in their body.
In the west, you get a job with the company, and they assign you work. This is complete kryptonite to anything resembling innovation or creativty.
Imagine a traditional book publisher that instead of seeking out writers who have created their own stories, you instead just hire writers to write something the publisher came up with. Imagine how bad that would be. You'd never create anything worthwhile at all.

What comics should do, is basically just copy the manga structure.
That is to say, don't hire editors to then tell artists and writers what to make, but instead hire editors to FIND artists and writers who already have ideas, and publish their ideas.
The editors job is not to be a visionary, it's to ensure what gets published atleast meets the target demographic and doesn't violate and print regulations.

Creativity comes from the creators.

They do, but the trade off is that they're forced to slave over their work more to meet mostly weekly deadlines. Urasawa, Otomo, Tezuka, Nagai, etc all had creative freedom. The key is giving these creators the ability to actually showcase their craft. Unfortunately I don't think many currently active newer comic writers are of the caliber that Moore, Ennis, Miller, Gaiman, Morrison, Ellis, Milligan, early Sim were. Another problem is that Spider-Man is immensely popular but editorial fucking hates 616 Peter so they're actively chasing away fans. Also nobody but people in the hobby are spending 5 dollars on floppies. It's unsustainable at that price when the trades are cheaper. Before Viz's slight price increases you could get a volume of Chainsaw Man for 10 dollars which is only 5 dollars more than your average floppy. The American comics market needs to pivot to survive in this current landscape because as it stands I imagine their older stuff sells way more than their newer stuff.

It's a shame only japan is inhumane enough to impose the terrible deadlines and schedules manga magazines are known for.
You can find good-ish stuff in the indie scene but the authors are not obligated to actually wrap up their story. Even Image is more of a 'come when you feel like publishing' kind of deal.

It has come to my awareness, that the kinds of people who like comics, and the kinds of people who like manga must be mutually exclusive, because comics and manga are so polar opposite to eachother on such objective grounds that it cannot be possible for one to like both.

Mangaka and assistants is a process that makes sense. Its basically a master/apprenticeship situation. The American separation of writing from drawing means you pick your lane and don't get a lot of practical experience doing both which means there's a fundamental disconnect between them which is just as perceived by the audience who notice every time people start talking differently or the book suddenly looks different.

Comics are so dead they are barely discussed on this board anymore.
