Cardboard waterproofing
I've been engrossed by NHIL's video on cardboard construction. I love the concept of builders making stuff out of light, sturdy and free materials, even the glue is just water and flour. The papercrete specifically caught my eye.

But waterproofing is the big issue. Just painting the structure seems to not work, and NH proposes two solutions: a mixture of shellac and beeswax emulsified in boiling ethanol (house full of fire), or gluesticks and parafin wax heated and spread onto the material. The former has the benefit of being applied at room temp like a wood sealant. The later is much simpler to produce and can be re-applied and patched, but only when heated.

Does anyone else know of something to waterproof this material? I feel like hair-spray or some other substance would be an obvious pick.

You know this is just memeshit clickbait, right?

With the amount of effort you need to put in to make this shit last even a short amoutn of time, unless your time is worth absolutely nothing there is no reason to build shit this way over using materials that actually last.

Look at me! I'll make styrofoam as strong as carbon fiber!
Step 1: Cut a styrofoam plug
Step 2: Lay down a few layers of CF on it
Step 3: Optionally remove the plug from the finished product
There. Styrofoam made stronger by weight than steel!
No I didnt watch the video but everyone and their mom can tell where this shit is going.
Want to watch me make chicken wire as strong as concrete next.

for outdoor use a layer of plasti-dip or similar rubber coating could last a year or more.

For bigger projects you could try a roof coating like pic related.

Thanks for giving an actual answer. 4chan is turning into reddit with its replies.

Are you new here? Its always been shit. It isn't even that bad. Before they setup the containment boards and got actual moderators this place was a horror show.

My first experience with cardboard was a light diffuser case for a construction LED light. With a little bit of time, effort and hot glue you can make the most intricate constructions. Weirdest thing with some spraypaint it became a very hard material it can easily take bumps and drops. Its very cool

You want a real answer?
Build a wood or metal frame and just wrap it with plastic like a green house.
It's easier to repair.
Waterproof.
It's light like you want (use PVC framing and you can watch it blow away)
Or
Buy 3 tents and cut guinea pig tunnels into them and call them rooms.

There is a reason we don't build structures from cardboard and the amount of resources it would take to do it would exceed other options.

It's a worst option, more expensive and more time consuming. It's not structurally safe, it's a pest magnet with consumables glueing it together. You're going to have rodents and bugs like it was designed for them, cause it was.

I'm not joking when I say you're probably better off with an umbrella and calling that shelter.

If you're just doing this for fun. Do small scale doll house style construction till you feel comfortable enough to build something larger. Don't forget it's a hobby and not a way to live.

That's a real answer brother. Not the one you wanted to hear I'm sure. I think people aren't taking you seriously cause this doesn't seem like a serious idea. The youtuber is making content, not teaching you anything.

I am the end result of actually internalizing the "into da woods" memes.
They quarantined us from /a/ to /b/ for shitting it up.
It's nice seeing someone pre isrseli right wing 4chan.

Chicken wire is already fundamentally pretty strong
This is all framed in chicken wire and supports basically a wall of grapes and vegetation.

Prisoner shot a guard in the neck with a paper-mache crossbow, one of my favorite "true crimes". But why spend 200 hours on that when you can do 3 shifts at McDonald's and buy a gun, a Taurus mind you, but a gun none the less. Op seems like he is making his own life hard and wasting precious time he could otherwise be using to master actual skills. If he likes paper-mache, go for it. But he's trying to do construction with paper-mache and he learned it from a youtuber who produces content. The skills learned aren't lining up with the desired product.
I'm not trying to discourage or shit on op. He just needs guidance. All ideas are worth playing with but this one should be thrown away rather quickly.

Me again.
Go get some oil based wood stain and try soaking a small piece of cardboard in it. Dry it and then Submerge it. I still recommend other building techniques but there's a real "try that".

It might absorb exactly like wood. It may make it brittle for all I know. It's worth trying.
Hair spray is stupid.

Thanks, OP. I'm in Canada and I might have to use this to build shelter in the woods the way things are going.

Thanks for the info. I was never looking to build a house with it, it seemed like something easy and cheap. I'd rather use it than drop thousands into a 3D printer I will use once and let collect dust.

We use certain materials for certain reasons.
If you want light. Do a hollow pipe, wood, and plastic to weather proof, if you want tough, do concrete.

If this is like a paper mache hobby and your making line figured and stuff, my bad about the advice.

You can also try maybe a wax if you don't plan on weather proofing it and the environment is controlled. I could imagine w thin layer of wax probably stopping a spill or something from ruining paper craft.

Good luck man. I hope whatever your trying to do let you learn even if it sucks in the moment

I've been thinking about making some boards by gluing old boxes together with wheat paste and wrapping them in shipping paper for light-use shelves, tabletops, etc. simply because I have a ton of cardboard and don't feel like making multiple trips to the recycling center or paying a responsible level of attention to a cardboard bonfire.
