t/roon/ Running General - Little lotus flower edition
>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

I need help. I use the Coros watch to track my runs but lately it’s been widely overestimating the amount of calories I burn on my longer runs. It used to log 700-900 calories burned on my 11-13 mile runs now it’s like 14-1500 and the pace isn’t rly that fast either. Anyone know how to fix? Pic related is an example, 11 mile runs at 7min pace is not 1450 calories burned lol. Its like half that.

is probably in or near the Netherlands like me.

I just went running around 6pm yesterday and I will probably do a parkrun tomorrow at 9am when it's still an okayish temperature.

Just don't expect to be able to go very hard because your body is still trying to adapt to this shit. I went on a relatively easy run and my heart rate was basically completely unrelated to my pace. It' just pumping to cool you down basically. I just did like 35 mins and I don't think it's good to do a lot more unless you bring water and go easier.

rain is fine IMO as long as it's not too heavy, I just go because I'm going to get wet either way.

run faster so you outrun the lightheadedness

but yeah you really need some food. A banana is good, but you can also have gummy bears or something. Maybe a few hours before your run actually have something with some "slower carbs" too. Potato crisps is good for your electrolytes. Always be careful you don't just eat breakfast food n shit because you will lose salt when you run

Also maybe a bit of milk in the coffee can sorta smooth out the way the coffee hits.

I feel you anon. I have a "fibrous tarsal coalition", ie where a few bones in my feet are fused together with fibrous tendrils. When I was about 18-20 the bones would sometimes break and rub against each other, which is about as much fun as you would expect.

I used to think running would be physically impossible, but stability shoes somehow made it work.
I started on a pair of Asics Gel Kayano 30, and now I'm on the 31.
My feet have somehow developed slight arches from all of the running, and my instep no longer touches the ground. I'm still slow (24:49 5k), but making steady progress.

How are you guys doing long runs in zone 2 ? Running is fun and all but z2 runs are hell to me.

First it’s super slow and that bores me, i juste want to roon faster. I can run a 10k in 45min but even at 5’45”/km which definitely is easy run territory i’m already in low z3. And it’s supposed to be easier on your body but at that pace my cadence drops and i feel like my running form turn to shit. Shins and knees hurt more at 6min/km than at 4’45”/km.

Z2 training is so much more enjoyable with swiming, biking or hiking. But i’m still new to running… are long slow run really necessary to reinforce my running tendons/muscles/articulations ?

I feel you. I used to control my pace through cadence as well but when I started focusing on cadence and kept it high despite going slow it got better. It will feel weird in the beginning to take such short steps but you will get used to it. This fixed my form when going slow and puts less stress on my body.

pic related is today's easy run. As you can see the cadence is high despite the slow pace.

If your recovery is too slow, you're probably doing too much volume or intensity (usually intensity).
Slow down your runs, and reduce the number of hard/fast sessions you do. If 13 miles is your longest run, you can probably just do one interval/threshold/etc session per week. Something like two easy runs, one long run and one interval session per week for a total of maybe 40km.

Also obviously make sure your sleep and diet are good. If you don't eat enough before, during and after your long runs then your recovery will slow down significantly.

i'm not ready to go outside yet but when i do, i feel like im going to have issues maintaining a constant pace because as of now the treadmill takes care of that for me, so it's not a skill i've had to train or anything.

i usually run at a speed of 4.0 - 4.6 according to my treadmill (lower speed when c25k wants me to run for a longer amount) is there a cheap running gadget that could give me info for when i do start running outside? and how quickly will it become second nature to just maintain my speed/cadence/rhythm all on my own?

I just know i'll fuck up, the treadmill keeps me honest in a way where im not allowed to slow down without deliberately turning down the dial. On solid ground i could easily make an excuse to trot for a few seconds or switch to walking the second i feel any need to

You can find cheap watches. I got a Huawei fit 3 for $100. Alternatively just run, consult the meme graph, nothing really matters until you are at a semi pro level, your limiting factor in your progress will always be your consistency and 'determination', not how you are training, even if it was how you were training, as a casual, how fast/well you run isn't the point of running, it's learning discipline.

Run for distance e.g. 5k and decrease the time it takes.
If you want speed then do intervals e.g. 1 min run 1 min walk. Then increase the run e.g. 1 min 10sec run 1 min walk until you get something like 2 min run 1 min walk. Then decrease the walk e.g. 2 min run 45 sec walk.Something like 5 second increase/decrease per run. Then adjust based on your fitness and goals.

No, I just don't run long enough distances to justify the heavy padded shoes that are the rage nowadays. I like lightweight shoes and have a midfoot strike so all the cushion in modern shoes just feels like dead weight.

Random shit happens. Most runners, most of the time, are nursing some niggle or another. (My ankles right now - both of them, but particularly the right...) If you're at all serious about the cycling, your cardio is also probably much stronger than your legs' musculo-skeletal system, so it's easier for you to overdo things relative to what your body can handle.

If it's sharp pain, probably best to back off. If it's just dull and not at all noticeable when you're not running, it might be run-through-able and it'll get better on its own in a few weeks.

the pool should have a big bin full of foam kickboards to just grab
I don't see the point in using flippers, makes you go faster, I just swim to improve my aerobic base, give me something to do on rest days, shake out my legs, strengthen small muscles etc.
you'll know you're doing good when you aren't tired while doing it
yes indoor pool is fine
another thing you can do if you're just starting out is just go into the deep end and tread water until you feel full exhausted
it might be hard at first but once you can do 20 mins without getting tired you can graduate to the kickboard
if you want to make treading harder try crossing your arms over your chest or grab your hands behind your back and use only your kicks to keep you afloat
this will also teach you to keep air in your lungs to stay up

little bit of obvious (seems obvious) but when you are treading water in the deep end, do it in a place where you are in arms reach to the edge of the pool if you need to take a break and also make sure you can see the clock, I like to set time challenges, started with 5 mins, then 10, 15, 20 etc.

It's really not that complicated. Yes wear goggles. Any shorts will do as long as they don't fall down with the water resistance when you kick off the wall, don't wear cotton cause it waterlogs and gets really heavy.
You should know that swimming is 95% technique and your ability to swim a long distance or swim fast are both very dependent on swimming form/technique and not your cardio or vo2 max or any of that. If you didnt grow up swimming (on a team) your best bet is to take some private swimming lessons as an adult (slightly embarrassing, but extremely valuable) to learn the basics of proper technique. It's very hard to learn good technique just from YouTube or whatever.
I have a buddy who is fat as hell and never works out but he can destroy me in the pool because he was a D1 swimmer some years ago and I wasn't, his technique is better than mine and therefore his ability to reduce drag makes him beat me despite the fact I'm in way better shape. We did a 12 mile marathon swim event together and his time was way faster than mine despite the fact he didn't even train for it

You've got running ass backwards. Run slow, like 10min/mile slow and aim to run for about 40 minutes a couple of days a week. Once you're comfortable with that then put in a weekend long run aiming to extend up to about 90 minutes. If you can't manage those durations then run slower.

This will build your aerobic base and after a few weeks/months the effort required will be less. Your heart rate will have dropped from like 30bpm for the same pace and that means ypu are able to ake on some tougher speedwell sessions without blowing up.

Younger people are really hard to talk to in general, I have no frame of reference with them. Why though? This isn't the 8th century northeastern Europe anymore where you need le strong sons and all that larpy bullshit. It's a whole american meme that the dad wants to play ball with the kid and the kid hates that shit so much that he begins hating sports as a whole.
It's 2025, it's better to not have kids at all because we're basically during the end times of the world, but if you do want to have kids, forcing something arbitrary upon then à la "this good, this bad" is simply worse than letting them be.
And almost all of these troons have absent fathers, if you're present and you're there and he can rely on your 4chan ass, it's likely he won't become a troon

We're not in the end times of the world. We're in the end times of western civilisation. Like when Rome fell the Italians didn't just disappear. It's the same for us. I'm a dad and I'd be gutted if my kids trooned out and made themselves infertile. The thing is though you actually have to be a dad and build a relationship with your kid so that they are resilient to the brainwashing, you're dead right about the absent father. Even when fathers are in the home many of them make no effort with their children. They teach them nothing, impart no wisdom onto them, leave to to muddle their way through life. My kids are super confident at school because they know I've got their back. If they have scuffle or disagree with the brainwashing they're not frightened of being told off because I will support them.
