>Advice for new runners
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week)
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans)

I had some knee pain a few weeks ago, and my fysio told me one of my LCLs is looser that the other. Even with improved form, my knee hurts after runs. Am I fucked? Apparently I can work on the knee pain, but I'm worried about my ability to live, run and move pain free in the future if I continue running. What do?

pretty much just start by walking backwards, I like the curved treadmill at the gym for that, least resistance
then eventually getting into backward sled drags with a bit of weight, belt around waist strapped to sled
then you start doing split squats, start with easiest mode
just look into it dude, takes like 30 mins to 1 hour of research and you can begin healing your knee issues

ran, south this time
I can see on the pace and cadence charts where I had to climb the hills and do the twisty parts of the trail. Didn't hit zone 5 even once this time, but my vo2 max is still 49 according to my watch
I saw 1 heron, lots of geese, and 4 rabbits, one was a cute little bun, I gave it a thumbs up and some lady riding toward me on a bicycle looked at me weird

Can't run further than 5 miles. I'm gonna try on Sunday even if I have to talk a walk break but my legs are gone. I shouldn't have pushed it so soon.

I'm not sure if I should drop training miles and attempt a long run on weekend or just run 3 miles everyday and accept I'm probably not gonna make my marathon.

I went from just walking to 15-20 miles a week including hilly courses and hot weather but my powers have been fading. Yeah, dumb, I know but it was working until it wasnโ€™t. I tried dropping to a more sustainable schedule this week and I still just feel like shit and I hate it. Iโ€™m debating on taking a full week off and see how I feel. Marathon is in 16 weeks.

Depends on the course. There's definitely always a penalty but it's surprisingly small on flat tarmac with no sharp turns - once you get going, the rolling resistance on a proper running buggy is pretty small. Anything hilly and you just die on the climbs, though, and while the descents are fun you lose more time on net. My local turns in to a bog in winter and I still see some mad guys pushing buggies through it somehow.

no everything you need to know is available for free, just takes some sifting through videos
the programming is intuitive enough, just add some of those things to a gym day and scale up
for example with the split squat; you start with front foot very elevated, then eventually move to adding weights after removing the elevation

Yeah but it seems like the stones are kind of large. I think they have plans to pave this eventually, maybe it's just not done yet. Maybe it's been paved since this street view was taken. I guess I'll give it a try... it's like 3.5 miles from here to the other end, so 7 mi out/back, I probably won't do the full distance though

im getting back into it after having a long running break (i ran occasionally but not as consistent as before). now im at the point where i can comfortably run a 5k again but at a pretty slow pace (~6min/km) compared to before.
what would be the smartest way to improve? i wouldnt mind going for more distance but im not sure this is the best base to go further from. ive heard that zone 2 training is the way to go, is that a meme or viable option?

Ok, I went out on the new trail. Turns out it is paved now... apparently it might have just been paved last week or something, since there were signs saying it was closed and everything looked fresh. There were other runners and cyclists on it, so I went anyway. It was awful though... no shade, and a very sunny day, so I ran out of energy pretty quick. As soon as I stopped, I started pouring out sweat. This trail might be for only cool cloudy days.
I saw 5 rabbits though, one was a tiny lil bun about the size of my fist.

nice, glad to hear you're still running and the groin is feeling better?
you dont know me but we've had lots of back and forths
I recently had a flare up of back pain (sciatic and immobility been hitting me since 2019) so I'm only doing like 1-2km at a time right now and jogging very slowly and gently
I had an MRI done a month ago and never even called my doctor to see what the results were because it won't change the way I live my life

Groin still hurts sometimes, but it's not bad enough to stop me. I just need to keep my steps really short, cadence high, and make sure I'm not overstriding. It's just soreness now, no sharp pain. Last time it really hurt, I was in pain for days, especially if I coughed, sneezed, stood up, sat down, went up/down stairs, got into/outof bed, etc... Nothing like that this time. Id id have an ultrasound on my groin (very awkward experience), but they didn't see any tears or hernias, so it's probably just tendonitis. I'm waiting to hear if my doctor is going to try and get me physical therapy or not. It would be nice to get it fixed somehow, so I don't have to focus 100% of my mind on my running form every single fucking time...
Sucks about back pain, never really had that. You should try to find out what the results were if it still hurts, they can maybe get you PT or something.

I'm not running to enter a 5K or anything, but I've only been running since June 3rd and I just completed my first 5K, is that normal progression?

I run .7KM - 1KM 5 times a week on my lunch break(5 minute drive away), and did a 2K and 3K before this 5K. I rest on my first day off before the bigger runs.

I wasn't even tired at the end of the 5K. Had to keep going for a bit just to get back to my house. Haven't brought any water or taken breaks yet.

took half a year of pt before i could run again without flareups.

i still love the feel of zero drop minimalist shoes but will probably never run in them again. still use a pair for yardwork.

tbf I was only doing 20-30mi/week the months leading up to my marathon and was fine, weather was really bad though so didn't get the time I wanted, otherwise I think I would've been close
although if you're new to running I don't expect you to be able to do that, and I really should have done more myself. Hoping next year to possibly put in 60 mile weeks with real workouts (not just distance) and maybe go for sub 2:50 but time will tell

Mainly because I've had two bad calf tears in the past 18 months.
The strength training has definitely enabled me to run longer more frequently.

What's your ankle mobility like? Try putting your foot one hand-width away from the wall, and leaning forward to touch your knee against the wall.
If you can't do that then there are lots of mobility guides online, but picrel is a good start.

>Doesn't need water
False and they lack salt.

Mid run food is basically solved and high fructose sources are absolute garbage. It's almost as sad and expensive as carbon plates and high end foams, but getting used to high carbs with good gels is simply the best option and you gimp yourself, if you don't follow this approach. I used candy mid long run and for classic amounts of carbs, it does work for 20milers, but once you get used to high carb you simply cannot go back. It is an insane boost in performance. And once you go for marathon races or short single day ultras, you need to gel it up anyway.

Gels cost literally $5 each here.
Unless I start making my own, I will never use them. I don't know how much money you have, but it must be a fucking lot if you're willing to spend $20 in gels for your weekly long run.
Also, the #1 and 2 ingredients are sugar (sucrose, aka 50/50 fructose/glucose) and glucose syrup. So it's probably pretty close to le heckin science ratio of 2:1.

Ingredients (for ~6 servings):
100g unsalted butter, grass-fed if possible
50ml raw whole milk (or raw cream for even higher fat content)
2 tbsp MCT oil or coconut oil
1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder (optional, for flavor)
1 tbsp nut butter (e.g., almond, macadamia โ€“ optional)
1โ€“2 tsp electrolyte mix (or a pinch each of salt, potassium chloride, magnesium glycinate)
>Gently melt the butter in a small saucepan.
>Stir in raw milk, MCT oil, nut butter (if using), and cocoa powder over very low heat โ€” do not boil, to preserve the enzymes in the raw milk.
>Once combined, remove from heat and stir in electrolytes and flavorings.
>Use a milk frother or immersion blender to thoroughly emulsify the mixture. This helps prevent separation.
>Let cool slightly, then pour into silicone squeeze tubes, gel flasks, or small resealable pouches.
>Chill in the fridge until firm but still squeezable.

I unironically spend this much money on some of my long runs. At least the ones with 100carbs/h. I don't do them weekly though. It sucks and I'm feeling like an idiot. But it works and I will keep it up until my big races for this year are over. If you want to do your own stuff and save money, at least experiment with powdered carbs. I think the fellrnr wiki has a page with home made gels.
Note that carbs aren't carbs and consider that osmotic pressure can fuck up your run.
At least I switched trail years ago, because the current road shoe meta is just grim.

Minimalist shoes are good, but running barefoot is better if your situation allows for it. The difference between the two is like night and day.
That said, the biggest problem with running in minimalist shoes or barefoot is you *will* fuck up your achilles and metatarsals if you don't build them up over time with low impact long slow distance and appropriate nutrition (i.e. a fuck-ton of glycine for tendons and calcium, D3, and K2 for bones).

Every endurance sport has Z2 base building as a core practice for a reason. If you're training for more than 10 hours a week, then yeah, Z2 interspersed with one or two Z5 efforts per week will dramatically increase your aerobic capacity and running economy. You'll get the aerobic capacity by doing incline treadmill walks at Z2 efforts, but unless you're also doing speed drills, your running economy will probably suffer.

No, even the high carb ultra runners usually only fuel from 90min upwards. A decade ago people would do extensive fasted running and they were also fast. But it's simply not the meta anymore. Proper fuel means optimal training output and regeneration.

Creatine does provide energy to muscles, so maybe it gives the extra boost my muscles need when they are worn out.

You can do both and be mediocre at both like me. I think my run times would be slightly better if I set aside time to actually prep and try to set a real time. I run and lift everyday so everything is kinda fucked. They'll get better eventually though.

In March I got really sick with a cold so in April I decided to try supplements (b-complex, l-glutamine and magnesium). I read about the ecological model of the immune system and it sounded like what happens with me: as soon as I started exercising consistently, I got sick. But with this supplement stack I haven't been sick since.

Pretty amazing seeing the difference in this chart

On Couch to 5k, on the 5th week where you have to jump from doing 8 minutes run- 5 minutes walk - 8 minutes walk to 20 minutes non stop.

This shit seems like itโ€™ll be impossible. And Iโ€™m running like 9 minute kms too. How the FUCK do you guys roon so far and fast?

As a beginner, don't try to aim for "far and fast".
You need to pick either far, or fast. For that 20 minute run, try going a lot slower than you would normally. Slow enough that it just feels like you're barely putting one foot in front of the other. Just make sure you're still keeping your cadence high despite the lower speed, with tiny beetle-like strides rather than big floaty jumps.

Also try getting your BMI to 20

I walk at like 8 mins/km btw so how you run slower than that is hard to imagine for me.

1 - get off couch
2 - run a 5k
No, you don't need to walk or jog or doing any mixing thereof. You are fully capable of going out and doing it. It's not even for time, just completion. It does not take 8 weeks to manage a measly 5 kilometers.

>what did you learn about adjusting/training your gut or what you ear pre-run?
I find that what kills my run most of the time is my stomach and not my endurance. Ive had some of my best runs on an empty stomach but I need food if I want to run more than 10km or past one hour, otherwise I have no energy on the second half. Alternatively if I eat stuff it usually sits heavy in my gut or feel like barfing it up sometimes, even if its stuff like white bread or a banana. Liquid too can be problematic, usually I never drink anything while running and max one cup of water before I exit the door. Ideally I eat a good meal like 3+ hours before and then nothing in-between, but that is often not feasible due to schedule. Thought about bringing gummy bears or something along with me on longer runs for some quick energy? I dont think I could handle liquids but maybe those are necessary to bring with if you plan to go 15km n up? Anyway just looking for some pointers/tips on this topic. Thanks for reading my blog.

I just tried to set a PR on one my 5k routes and failed miserably, I was on track speed wise but had to stop and walk just after the 3km mark. After this I just done a series of high effort short runs then stopped to walk to recover, it was actually quite enjoyable. So I guess it was 3km tempo run - walk - 80% effort 500m - walk 80% 300m hill run - walk - 200m sprint - walk etc. Is this an acceptable speed workout? Or would I be better just doing a tempo run one day then some sprints the next?
