Old anons, how do you stay fit?
Ever since I turned 30 my motivation to lift has been evaporating. Going to the gym is becoming more of a struggle and feels less rewarding

Maybe take some time off to deload. Let your joints and tendons get some r and r while doing just stretches and deep breathing. I'm no yoga advocate, but this honestly helps me a lot every couple few months to take a day or two off the cycle of going to gym and beating myself up. I also eat a lot more lol but it's obviously good food like stews with tons of veges, spinach and shit and deenz, lots of sardines mm mm bitch

I like lifting because if you have hair and are athletic, a lot of women in my age range really seem to dig it, though it’s more younger chicks that seem to like it. But more importantly if you look at a lot of old people, do you really want to end up like that? It’s easy nowadays to slide into shit like diabetes or obesity.

I’m 34 and train for 6-8 hours per week. I mix it up to keep it interesting.

Spring and summer are for marathon training, I usually peak at 75-80km per week. I run with a run club once per week (one of my easy runs), I go to the track once per week for intervals, and the rest of my runs are outside, mostly road runs with some trail runs mixed in for my easy miles. If I have time, I plan a new route or fun route to explore.

During this time I only lift 2x per week.

Fall/winter are for weightlifting. I lift every other day, and run on off days. Just to keep a base of about 40 km per week.

I used to hate cardio, but I’ve fallen in love with running and now I find it much more fun than weightlifting.

34 boomer here. Also currently separating from the National Guard after serving for 14 years. Kinda sucks because once I started the process I had to stop doing shit and now it’s been two years and I am itching to just go back to the gym and get good again. It’s going to be nice to work out for myself and not the fucking Jews or worry about some silly exam. I just want to look fucking good and take the stress of working out. I was a former ranger fag then went nasty bitch full time 11B and it’s been fucking stressful.
It made working out not fun and I hate that. This time I had separating I started a new career, got married, bought a house and once this process is done fully I want to go again and be strong. Sorry for the rant, I would just say motivation and discipline are key.

Almost half the time, I don't want to go to the gym. So I force myself to get into my truck and drive there, and I bitch and moan the entire way.
Then, once I'm there, might as well go in and work out, right? Otherwise I will have wasted the 15 minute drive. Once I get through a warm up set or two, its smooth sailing the rest of the session.
Also, I inevitably feel like a lazy, worthless piece of shit if I don't go.

At 38yo I basically gave up trying to put on even more muscle. I could still grow but it was just too much effort for too little gain. My job has also become more physical so I just don't have the energy and recovery capacities. Instead, I maintain what I have and that's easily done with 2 sessions per week and also a lot less force-feeding. To keep things interesting, I sometimes specialize on a certain lift and try to bring that up. I no longer do any lifts that have given me issues with injuries or flare ups in the past, so my training is very low risk. I also do 90 mins (sometimes 2x45) of zone 2 cardio on 3-4 days of the week.

Just turned 39

Still training but my focus has switched to slower more controlled reps, rather than banging out weight. You can do the same stimulus by benching 5x12 at light weight as risking injury with 3x5 heavy,

I’ve added in more accessories and more recovery time over the years too

I’m 6’4 185lbs right now, as of pic related, but im about to embark on a 6 month clean (300-500kcal) surplus bulk, with the goal of getting to about 200lbs with not a shit load of fat to lose

I eat clean, year round, 200-250g of protein per day, natural test level is 611

Would love to do a cycle and get big, but I’m afraid that my natural levels wouldn’t recover properly because I’m old

So, eat properly and lift. If you run, swim, bike, play pickelaball, play basketball, etc., if just makes you tired and hungry and steals your gains.

Instead lift to get bull fucking strong and jacked, and learn how to eat in a protein heavy way that noursihes your body and mind without you feeling hubngry. Tightent up the diet and get jacked.

Seriosuly. Cardio is gay, stupid, for competitive athletes, for bodybuilders dieting for a contest. You dont need it to be 12% and jacked and healthy.

If your heart does not get workout from lifting, you aren't doing it right.

What is cardio? Exercise that works out your heart. Put a heart rate monitor on while you lift. Its literally like running 200 meter sprints and then walking 200 meters. For your entire workout. The 20 minutes you train your set causes your heart rate to spike, then it slowly comes down over the rest period, only to be spiked again by your next. set. For an hour and one half, or whatever your workout takes. Even during the "rest" period your heart rate is slightly elevated to that of a medium paced walk.

Think for yourself - exercising your heart muscle does not require it to be artificially elevated on a machine, then kpet there for 20 -40 minutes, then stopped. Any exercise that causes the heart to work harder (like lifting) is cardio.

Learn to think for yourself and stop doing what the memes tell you.

I'm 32.
I am so stoked because I found a way to squeeze some training into my everyday routine.
When I walk my dog, I carry my backpack with me, in which I have some plates. I'm up to 35 kg now. I feel like a genius, it's like free training while I do something I have to do anyway.
I also keep a kettlebell in my office. If I'm stuck on something, or get one of those moments where I blankly stare at the screen and wonder about how fucking pointless it all is, or I don't feel like drinking coffee in a coffee break, I'll give it 50 good swings to get the blood pumping.
Other than that, I don't lift so much anymore. I've come to appreciate running and jogging more, since you have to keep to a pace once you start. It's been times when I've lifted that I've felt so blown out between heavy sets that I've just straight up stood there and looked at the bar for ten minutes, gathering strength and resolve for the next set, the entire session taking 2+ hours. It's still satisfying to do it, but it feels more like wasting time than a quick run, so most of my lifting is just to maintain strength rather than pushing for new PRs.
I've also become more concerned with warming up properly and paying more attention to my form. I don't necessarily believe that my body won't handle my snapping my shit up any better or worse than when I was in my 20's, but after more of my friends started getting back and shoulder injuries I started paying more attention to it.

As a 32 year old father of two with a demanding factory job to accommodate my wife's career that doesn't get every weekend off. Bandit and the mom seem like great parents on the surface but also give into everyone of their kids delusions.
One of the better kids show for sure though. It kind of makes me feel shitty but I also get up at 2:45am to lift then don't get home until 4-5pm. I'm not a cartoon dog.

During covid for 9 months I was super dad and in the best shape of my life. Work truly sucks the life out of you.

Just look at the people around you if you want motivation. I dunno about you, but there's no better reminder to continue eating healthy and staying active than seeing people your age who look so much worse, and there are plenty of fat, lazy motherfuckers around starting in your late 20s.

Suppose I can't deny the risks, but I believe I mitigate them to some degree by having strong supporting muscles, being particular about my footwear, and not progressing too fast with weight and distance.

Check out K Boges on youtube. The gist of it is doing a push a pull and a leg excercise every day, spreading the volume to ensure recovery. Progress isn't only in sets, reps and weights, but also in mastery of the movements themselves. Seems pretty sustainable and the perceived time investment is lower, since you do shorter sessions every day. You might also want to give the training a break for a couple of weeks.

Cardiovascular and mitochondrial changes have been shown in studies to come after either sustained zone two effort or Z4/5 interval work. Heart rate rises from your lifting doesn’t meet these thresholds.

I know this is /fit/ but constantly sizing people up past like the age of 30 is a sign arrested development. I know because I was able to break the habit and find some peace. Plus, since covid, even leftists are carrying now.

One man’s arrested development is another man’s youthful spirit. The key is balancing that out, nothing wrong with thinking about how you could totally own everyone in the room, just don’t actually do it.

>It's not about motivation, it's about discipline.
This first. Treat it like brushing your teeth and showering man it's the only way. But yea after that to stay motivated just change up the routine for a couple weeks or move on to a new program just to give your body a break or have something new to look forward to. The goal is to stay consistent and keep going so who cares if it isn't 100% "perfect/optimal" don't procrastinate due to analysis paralysis. Crawl, walk, run, sprint, bike...just keep moving forward.

The reality is that most lifters can't fight for shit though and most also have atrocious cardio. They'd probably get beat down by half the people in the room.
