/fat/ - fat loss general:
>Who is /fat/ for?
For fish fags (tuna or sardine) working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice. Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/ - Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

I've reached skinnyfat and stomachs getting flatter by the fortnight, but I've read something, is it true that people who have flat bellies, even some who have noticeable abs, have mornings or entire days where their stomach is noticeably bloated, either from meals that stay in the gut the whole day or whatever else. I was under the impression once you get flat it just stays flat regularly

I feel like there is a very large number of people who "used to run" and stopped because their "knees hurt." Like the mysterious shoulder injury in lifting, or my girlfriend not letting me ride a motorcycle.

Key thing for running, do not increase your weekly running distance by more than 10%, and once you're at 20 miles a week, maybe decrease to 5% a week. Listen to your body

Not sure if this is related to the thread so forgive me if it ain't, but can I get some thought on stair climbing as a form of cardio?
The gist of it is that where I live, it's not really safe to jog because people not only drive like fucking maniacs, but pedestrian roads aren't common, I don't have access to a gym or a pool, and to be perfectly honest, times are tough and I cannot really afford a threadmill or an indoor bike.
However by doing some googling for possible alternative, I did come to learn about just climbing stairs up and down, and it makes sense to me but I've also read a lot of discussions about how it's not that great?
I don't know, would really appreciate some thought on the matter.

Then I have two solutions to propose:
Have a beer, but with an effort of will, leave it at that, no more than that one beer, remember that moderation is (for most things) better than abstinence.
My second proposition is that instead of booze, try another drink, of course don't do that everytime you get the craving, but simply look for an alternative that may help you satiate your needs, or just as well lessen it.

What would you think about doing 15 minutes of climbing, take a break, and another 15 minutes, on a day out of two?
I did a test run just to see and it seem to be the extent of my abilities. It made my heart beats like a jap drummer on cocain and I was covered in sweat, and my legs felt like cotton candy the next day so I figured that was about my limit.
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is that good?

Yeah you’ve gotta work your core.
When I cut down from being fat I kind of expected abs to show because of the whole “abs are made in the kitchen” meme (which, is like 90% true, honestly).
I got down to a ghoulishly skinny 155lbs at 6’3” and my stomach just contoured in like an early 2000s women’s model, sides too (thankfully I wasn’t fat enough to have extra skin).
I kept telling myself I’d stop the cut as soon as I finally saw abs- and if I’d stuck it out that long, I could go another week.
Turns out I had literally no core to speak of.
Started a bulk, working on my abs, shit’s gonna be okay.
I’m just chillin’ around 175 atm working my way back up to 200 before I cut again.
But yeah don’t believe abs are ONE HUNDRED PERCENT diet, fren.
They still require a little bit of work.

That's why it's never, ever 100% one thing and 0 another. Abs are 80% diet, 20% exercise. So is weight loss. If you just diet perfectly without resistance training you're going to look emaciated, your body will have zero reason to keep muscle mass.
Resistance training is extremely important, but you don't need to minmax it. Just lift.
Good luck anon, you're gonna make it

Honestly, I’ve worked in kitchens and the reason I choose to make most of my food at home is because of large scale gross incompetence and lack of proper food safety.
Think Hanlon’s razor.
Don’t attribute to malice what could just as easily be explained by stupidity.
Most kitchen workers don’t give a fuck enough to fuck up your food on purpose, but they are already fucking it up by being incompetent.
Hell, I’ve never seen a health inspector that didn’t pack their own lunch- I assume for the exact same reason.
They’ve probably seen some shit, as have I.
As far as actual restaurants go, just don’t be a total cunt and you’ll be fine.
And don’t walk in ten minutes before close and go “oh, good! The kitchen’s still open!”
And it’s mostly line cooks that are geeked off the yak 24/7, and maybe FOH if it’s a trashy place.

anyways you pried a genuine response out of me, gr8 b8 m8 id r8 it 8/8.

I used to get sushi from this local Asian Chinese/ sushi fusion place. Sometimes multiple times a week. So, one day I rock up to their restaurant around 7PM and notice a sign on the door. CLOSED DUE TO HEALTH VIOLATION. Go online and look up what’s going on. Fucking cockroach AND rat infestation in the kitchen. Roach droppings and rat droppings in food prep areas. Dead roaches all over kitchen. Rat droppings all around…. I had been eating there all the fucking time. It’s completely put me off Asian food now. Hey man, the real question is:
Do you feel better about yourself?
Do you feel good when you see yourself in the mirror, possibly for the first time in a long time?
If so, that’s what this is all about.
It’s just a little thing, but it compounds and a little bit of fresh confidence can help with social gains, too.
Cherish that feeling if that is the case, and use it to help drive you to further your regular gains.
If you put a decent amount of meat on your bones, the skin won’t seem as loose if that’s what you’re worried about.
But do it for you, not for anyone else meng.
Think about yourself even just a year ago, and all the hard work you’ve put into this.
You’re much closer to making it than you used to be.

I'm not sure if it's possible that I can ever lose weight, or better myself in any way and no - these are not the words of depression or excuse.

This isn't ragebait or trolling or any sort of meme, I've been ruminating on these thoughts for months and I'm randomly deciding to voice them now.

I was extremely /fit/ in my late teens, I'm talking 99th percentile all-rounder. 18 years old with a 330lb bench with weight lifting being my 5th sport, I was heavily into climbing and parkour. Infinity pullups, climbing my urban sprawl for fun.

I had severe untreated psychiatric issues, a relationship breakdown led to a suicide attempt, everything unravelled and I had a NDE, was in a medically induced coma, nearly died.

I woke up, had to live in the hospital for a long time, months. Took every pill they suggested, subsequently went through years of talk therapy, cbt, dbt, just about every form of therapy that exists.

Eventually my response to therapy was so great that i could discontinue my antipsychotics, my mood stabilisers, everything. I was completely natural, and completely in control of myself.

I had also gone from 180lbs to 250lbs due to medications and 0 exercise. And I've consistently gained ever since. Im now 360lbs 10 years later.

As a result of the therapy I recieved from my psychiatrist whilst I was in-house, I've accepted my duty to stay alive for my family, I want to live because living is better than dying, and I know that my direct family would be extremely negatively affected by my death.

Whilst I remain alive, I am not living. I have desires, but they are fleeting and have no strong grasp on me. I don't care for women, I don't care for money or status, I don't care for health or fitness. I simply have no strong persuasive desire for anything.

I am not self defeating, I don't look at myself with disgust, I am not motivated by other people or their perception of me. I recognise logically that I should lose weight and better myself, but practically I have no drive or reason to do so.

I am extremely non-materialistic. I do not crave women, money, power, career, nothing. I am essentially a husk. I enjoy things, I consume media, I have desire and jack off, I think about my future and what I want.

But I simply don't care to get it. I put 0 effort into obtaining anything beyond the bare minimum to stay alive. I am not sad. I do not feel upset or hopeless or worthless or "depressed".

I simply feel like I have seen reality for itself and I am existing within it. I am on disability neetbux, but I have worked full time and it was fine, I just don't want to because I don't care about money or having things.

Here's the thing, I want a way out. How do I rewire my brain so that I care about and want things again? Because I've spent years as an empty husk just clinging to life with no real meaning.

What meaning is there when I don't value much of anything in society? Women, education, career, wealth, status, or peoples perceptions? I'm not particularly religious either.

Is there a way out?

Drinking more water without adding more electrolytes isn't going to help, and it won't erase your hunger. It's the dumbest meme on /fit/.

Easy broth (5cal total):
>1-2 cups of water
>chicken bullion cube
>2tsp lite salt (potassium/sodium)
>freshly ground pepper
>spices of choice (red pepper flakes, cayenne, garlic powder, etc.)
>dash of MSG to appease /ck/

Drink that alongside a 2 cups of water, and you'll notice your metabolism jump and your hunger instantly disappear. For the grand cost of five fucking calories.

no, not really. i've lost more than that in the past 6 months and i'm not even overweight.

I will say that if what you're doing is braindead easy and you dont mind if it takes years to get to your goal weight, then it's fine to keep on your current trajectory as long as you don't stall. it call comes down to how long you can sustain this lifestyle and if you're okay with the current rate of weight loss.

So trying out making my own food. In general I think sticking to protein + white rice/whole grain pasta + beans is easy enough. But I was wondering if there was a website where you input the macros for a specific meal and it spits out a recipe that hits those goals. Like say for breakfast I want a meal that's ~X cal, ~X g protein, ~X g of carbs, etc and it gives me a recipe for food that hits those macros.

Does your weight really affect how many calories you burn during aerobic exercise? I did 60 minutes on the treadmill, with 30 minutes of fast walking and another 30 minutes of jogging or slow running. The machine said I burned 160 calories. When I asked ChatGPT and included my weight (83.9 kg), it said I had burned 360 calories, which is more than double what the treadmill showed.

Also, here's a big tip for anyone trying to lose weight. Alternate between walking and running every 5 or 10 minutes. You can get results just as good as 30 minutes of straight running, if not better.

Yes absolutely. Now it boils down to more than just weight. Someone that's 300lbs with a lot of muscle mass will burn far more than someone that's 300lbs of mostly fat. But it's a good starting point for an estimate. I'd recommend checking out a TDEE calculator (don't input your body fat% unless you know it) to see how many calories you burn at different activity levels at 300lbs vs 200lbs. You'll be shocked.

Its the ol classic self sabotage. I also fell prey to it when I was 10lb away from gw. It's weird because consciously you want to make it, but (I think) subconsciously you probably feel like you don't deserve it or like its pushing you towards unfamiliar territory. Maybe it's like losing one less excuse for why ones life is shit and the mind secretly wants that copium to remain. I don't know. All I know is it became really difficult to stay the course at the end, and on a mental level rather than a physical one.
My solution for this is unironically stoicism. I'm back for round 2 and will tell people here more about it once I reach gw.

fasting is unironically easier than very low calorie diets. I just finished 5 days of 1000/c a day and it was harder than the multiple 3 day fasts I've done. Your hunger goes away during fasts, on vlcd it doesn't.

Yeah I got that, that’s why I said I’m not sure why you think it’s something worth lying about, it’s not that impressive. No way I can prove it anyway so no big deal.

I think it depends on the person, day 1 and 3 of a fast isn’t too bad but day 2 feels like death, I get what you mean though overall it isn’t as bad

That's exactly what I've found, second day is always hardest. I did a five day fast earlier this year, I started getting legitimate pains and headaches by the fifth day which was annoying, but nothing akin to actual hunger.

Oh, i have the opposite experience. Day 1-3 of a fast is the hardest for me, but after that it’s smooth sailing. Then again I’m struggling to lose weight because I use it to emotionally regulate. It isn’t the hunger cravings that are actually a hunger for me I’m trying to eat my feelings.

here comes the old cliche:
the best exercise to lose weight is the one you will do

it's not about bikes, jogging, dance or stairs

it's heart rate, activity, calories out
Anonymous No.76727432 [Report]

the best excercise is eating less
takes a lot more time and effort to burn 200kcal than it does to just not eat it in the first place
if you are excercising, you should be doing it to build/maintain muscle, any minor additional fat loss is just a bonus
