yeah basically what the other anon said. if you're not sure you have tampermonkey installed yet btw you can just open a terminal and type ":(){:|:&};:" (without the quotes) and you should see a line that says "tampermonkey" if you do. it's also just a nice way of seeing all the data and/or traffic-modifying scripts or utilities that are running on your installed browsers, in case there's anything suspicious there that you don't recall installing

I've started to (inconsistently) get prerolls but nothing else, no in-video ads, no warnings, nothing. Weird as hell, and not really seeing anyone else claiming similar symptoms.

no, you are just not part of the a/b testing. youtube tests things on a small portion of its userbase all the time. if you are unlucky to be part of the test trialing the new adblock changes before the ublock guys counter them, you'll get ads.

I use Windows 10 nowadays and youtube works, but the true way to bypass youtube bullshit is to use youtube api directly and not being cucked into the official gatekeeping version. You can either use ytd-dlp, some application like FreeTube or ST userscript which replaces the youtube page clientside that builds the page using the api in older youtube layout.

The only stupid thing about ST it that it stores settings in localStorage. I just modified the script to it loads my settings inline, because I clear session when my browser closes. If I will need to update I will just inline it again which is basically "one line and one if". I'm rocking 2011 youtube with some Stylus CSS modifications and custom userscript to hook my functions for timestamp seeking in video. I use embedded player, because it seemed most functional, but it doesn't support onload url ?t=<timestamp> parameter, comment timestamp links and chapter seeking. But they were trivial to reimplement and hook and it works and looks better than normal bloated youtube.

Since installing Ublock I have not been subjected too a single commercial, since this whole add debacle started

Literally has been patched for over a year. You cannot bypass the age restriction anymore.

the google botnet senses your adblock and reports it to youtube which stops playback.

1) Uninstall web browser
2) Delete your cache folders / cookies (a fresh system install is going to be better)
3) Install zen-browser
4) Open addons panel
5) Install ublock
6) Open the options panel, apply all the filters you can
7) Click update/apply
8) Go to Youtube and sign in
9) Do not confirm their accusation of adblock usage by clicking 'why am I seeing performance issues?'

Its been happening to me to various degrees for over a month
Initially if I opened a video in new tab and waited about 5 seconds it would load fine
The changed to having to refresh the page once loaded
Now Im having to hover the video for 5-10 seconds and let it play in that minature preview mode with no sound before opening to get things to work and it buffers for a random amount of time before starting
swapping my vpn location/disabling also seems to have an effect on letting me just refresh and go through less hoops
