The only two I know of that still somewhat resemble old internet forums, and you can get banned for saying the wrong things on either one.

The last forum I was on that used old internet rules (say whatever and no one gets banned) died in 2010 after a spammer posted cp and the admins didn't delete it in time. They lost their hosting and it never came back up. Things like this are probably why old internet died. You either keep tabs on your forum 24/7 or people with malicious intent will spam the most fucked up shit imaginable. It's easier to put your community on someone else's servers and let them handle the abuse reports. As an aside this is why I'll never say a bad thing about 4chin jannies even though I've been banned MULTIPLE times for no good reason. Because the truth is, without them doing it for free we wouldn't have a 4chan.

As a passion project I started a simple shitpost forum with pHpBB and fucked around with some friends but my friends were never people interested in forums so they felt awkward posting things on their which I understand because I've felt the same way before.

There are plenty of old-school forums still up and running--moderate engagement on them too--just that there really aren't that many forums or imageboard adjacent sites that are good for just shooting the shit where you don't have to worry much about the format of your post or one of the many rules you have to keep in mind for posting. That's a good way to gatekeep and maintain a certain standard for posting--one of the forums I had looked into had a rule against ebonics, vernacular, or leetspeak. There just aren't any--*many--"casual" forums with enough activity on them that don't have one post a month.

The only good thing about forums is that they are indexed by search engines, assuming the info wasn't gatekept too hard.
Discord isn't much better sadly. The servers I've seen aren't usually as bad in most ways, but the fact that you can't view/search the info without an account kills any praise I could possibly give it. It's a black hole of information and a tragedy for the wider internet.

People used the term "wild west" to describe old internet as early as the mid-2000s. It's not a retcon. There's a reason a lot of oldfags put 2008 as the cutoff date for when the internet was still good. That was when a lot of advertising companies started pulling ads based on the content of the sites they were being advertised on, which forced every website to enforce politically correct moderation policies.

I used to be on various forums throughout the 00s, from gaming to PC and politics. It was common to get into arguments, even technical, throughout hundreds of pages easily without slipping into adhominem or one side starting to post memes and ridicule/turn everything into a clown fiesta.
People seem to no longer tolerate if someone disagrees, they see it somehow as a personal attack?! Also they immediately cry for mods who act like dictators, I can't remember being banned even once back in the days yet I'm banned constantly today even for no reason at all. And it's certainly got nothing to do with age, we were all young teens back then yet most got along just fine

So really 4chan is the best i know now which is a shame because this site always was porninfested dogshit

I think it has more to do with the way people interacted with the internet. Because it used to be like an alternate reality, a sort of game where you pick up a pseudonym and explore your interests without bringing in your daily problems. Like a bigger version of your nerdy hobbyist gathering.

But with social media and the likes, not only has it attracted all sorts of people, but people started to use it as an extension of their lifes. They saw how to make money, they saw how tweets change politics. Thus naturally it stopped becoming just harmless pasttime and now people treat it as even more real or more important than reality. just look how people can't function without a phone outside

That is a very good point. I've experienced the change in interaction with the internet to an extension of the reality the users live in when I was moderating an IRC channel some 15 years ago.
To give an example, some new users were getting mad that they were being "misgendered" (without any reference to trannyism) just based on their nick while the older ones saw potential for a little lighthearted trolling.
