if you're not using an independent distro you're not doing it right.

you: the reader.
independent: not based on another distro which in turn might be based on a third distro and so on.
distro: to exclude winkiddies and itoddlers since they're not human in the first place.
not: to express negation.
right: opposite of wrong.

Defined in ~/scripts/screensaver.sh

And automatically added to launch agent in ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.screensaver.plist

$ launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.screensaver.plist

$ launchctl load ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.user.screensaver.plist

You are welcome. There are a few duplicates in all those downloads, so I would suggest taking 20 minutes to go through each folder before you do anything with them. There is a folder of XBM & XPM files that need converting to png, but imagemagick can handle them easy peasy. pic related. You will just need to trim the comments from the .bm files at the start of the file for it to work.

I do like changes overall, they look much better on the Mac than the iPhone, especially the use of the liquid glass, there's just too much of it on iOS and it looks tacky, as a result. Liquid Glass is a very cool effect, but it just seems like they used it for too many things on iOS and I don't think that made a good first impression.

I'm 99% sure it's some sort of meme, before I switched to xfce and took the floatingpill I used a multitude of different tiling fag managers that were complete cunts to use. You hear everywhere that they're more efficient until you realize that the use-case where they're more efficient is so unbelievably rare, most people just have 1 big window for the application they're using, if they need to use another application they'll just alt-tab or get a second monitor, or in the case of smaller applications like file browsers and terminals they'll just open them as small floating windows on top of their main window. Tiling window managers serve no practical purpose beyond getting /reddit/ updoots.

I went for scrolling wms, they make much more sense to me than tiling
Sometimes I need a main window, and a small portion of another window like a reference PDF or webpage visible on the screen
Tiling squishes the UI of the application to a point where it's barely usable
Floating wms have window switching features (Alt+Tab) that make less sense than holding the Mod key + a directional key corresponding to the window you'd like to switch to
I think it's all a matter of personal preference, anyone forcing people to use a specific system should keep that in mind

"Cuck" is a term used to describe developers who contribute labor to permissively licensed projects, they enabling corporations to privatize and profit from their work without reciprocation. OpenBSD contributors grant unrestricted freedom for entities (e.g., Intel, Microsoft, Apple) to embed code into proprietary products, modify it without sharing improvements, and monetize it—while original developers receive no financial compensation, meaningful attribution, or guaranteed access to derivative works. Unreciprocated labor, where OpenBSD’s ideology of maximal reuse paradoxically empowers corporate extraction, leaving contributors materially uncompensated despite their foundational work.

Bought the new Mac mini because I wanted something as/more stable than a linux desktop for work purposes with support for Ableton and was assured it would "just work" for basic tasks and be at least somewhat UNIX-like. In reality it sucks and you have to wrestle with it to do anything that a person who has used a computer before would try to do. It warns me and made me go diving through settings to allow me to install programs not from the App Store, and interrupted me turning off bluetooth to warn me that if I do that, I won't be able to use bluetooth accessories. I don't have any bluetooth accessories. Agonizing window management too.
Still more aesthetically pleasing than Windows though.

Also switched to Void on my home server. I like it so far. xbps is not a catchy name though. I see a lot of void users in this thread. Why do you guys use it? Any cool features over Debian, which I previously used for this server, that I should check out? Planning to get a multiple-HDD enclosure and add a bunch of disks for a makeshift NAS.

Installed LXQt Linux yesterday because it was recommended as babby-tier for customizing.That was a fucking lie. It took me forever to figure out the concept of "window manager" and "desktop environment" coming from windows. I spent way too long trying to figure out how to make my windows match my taskbar panel. Then there's the fact that customizing requires some hack job method, where you chain two apps together then set one as an environmental variable. But no one tells you how to make the environmental variable stick after logging out, and when you do figure out it turns out that doesn't work in LXQt because LXQt wants you to change them in the "sessions" app and if you put it in .xprofile it overrides it! HOLY FUCK.

But now that I got the jist of it i'm cooking with gas! Just spent the entire day making literally everything catppuccin. I'm catppuccined out of my mind.

PS: Fuck KDE apps literally never figured out how to theme kate. what a bloated piece of shit that app is. Found mousepad and it's literally god-tier I think I like it better than notepad++ and notepad++ is my holy grail note editor that I've not ever found a replacement for. Those XFCE people seem to be make some quality shit. might install that DE next.

PPS: I will admit LXQt and openbox have a lot of the same logic as windows and transitioning was pretty easy. A lot of the habits carry over, light right-clicking everything for menus. It's growing on me.

Install geany and compare it side-by-side with mousepad, they are quite similar. Mousepad is quite comfy but I think VS-code is better.

Also I think you had trouble with Kate because it requires GTK theming, where as your entire OS is based around Qt theming. Don't use KDE apps. Gnome apps are much better anyway. Try playing around with flatpaks too if you struggle to find specific programs that aren't in your repository.

Actually, if you're only trying to get in to linux and saw LXQt as a recommendation I think you should try a bunch of different distros but the one I can't recommend highly enough is Archcraft. Not only do you get the Arch experience, it's customized to an absurd degree, it has a bunch of zsh plugins, and has color-theme switchers. It's very easy to install because it uses the Calamares GUI installer (very beginner friendly).

If you are interested, backup all your customization into a github or a USB stick and continue trying out distros.

I'm getting in the desktop rabbithole and want to improve on this. How can I? What bothers me the most right now is the taskbar, but RoundedTB does not work in the current Windows 11. I also wish there was a way to leave the start menu permanently open in the desktop, in fact I'm surprised no such feature exists because it would be very intuitive.

Why don't you check out some videos on Alpine linux for your home server? Its package manager is the fastest I've ever seen, though it might be a bit of a learning curve because it uses doas instead of sudo but I always install sudo anyway.

I think a lot of people switched to void linux because Arch's popularity increased and became a meme distro because of the install script. It was the new achievement bragging distro but they do always compliment xbps so it's probably decent.
