They stole my startup idea, bros...
I remember years ago my cousin came to me with a "brilliant" tech company idea. He's actually a doctor, so he had money to make investments and stuff, and he had invested in some guy's local sandwich restaurant. My cousin's idea was for a way that people could go online and place orders for food, so it would be ready when you got there. He had this idea in like 2017.

I can even think of the multiple challenges involved in migrating, at least, from Microsoft Office to LibreOffice. Literally everyone was taught Microsoft Office as the main office suite.
I canโt imagine the number of macros or formulas that wonโt be compatible with LibreOffice.
Think about accountants: they have to learn another office suite in order to be able to work.
That being said, I believe this will be a positive step toward independence from Burgerland.

got an offer at a small HFT firm, thinking of quitting my big t*ch role, i just wanna have fun programming again instead of glueing APIs together all day. Seems like working on low latency perf critical c++/rust code to make as much money as possible for the company is the closest ill get to that goal
>>105750467I work in quant. How much is the offer? Know the type of company (is it actually HFT or is it a MM or what, also did they mention whether it's nano or microsecond timescale)?
I greatly enjoy the industry. Your "customers" are always people within the firm who are highly intelligent, you get treated with respect and corresponding salary as the services you provide can make or break the firm, and they tend to go all out on employee events and shit to keep people from hopping to other firms. Downside: noncompete. Potential upside, you get 6-12 month (unpaid) vacations whenever you hop companies.
you will return to the cow farms
>>105750519They matched my base at current role, however bonus is dependent on profitability, and since they are a new startup there isn't any atm. So it's kind of a risk for me I suppose. At my current role we get 3 months of base for bonus for average performance review. They did mention they are trying to keep the firm small (<25) such that individual bonus is higher.
The market is not very typical compared to other quant firms, I can't say specifically without doxxing. I don't know anything about the timescale. I am looking forward to more lean teams, no PMs, etc.
>>105750655They also said no bonus during probation but it seems like there won't be much profit anyway during my first 6 months. Theres no mention of a bonus in the contract, though I don't have it yet. I'll ask if they change the contract after probation. I've been told for quant bonus its very hit or miss each year.
>>105747931>sending blacks to the house of sick elderly>trusting indians to provide medical careI'm not sure which one has the higher chance of going wrong.
>>105750577>and even incense sticks made from cow dung
>>105750655That's sort of a red flag, sounds like you might be in something crypto oriented? Depends on whether you want to take a risk. I've never heard of a firm not giving you bonus during your initial phase, if anything they offer sign-on bonuses. Even startups - especially startups, since they have VC seed money and need to get extreme talent to kickstart the company.
I can't research it for you since doxx obviously but I'd be cautious. And a word of advice - take the offer only if you find the industry interesting and want to excel in it. Especially here. There's not even money unless you excel.
>>105750577>cow dung incense why are pajeets like this
>>105750940It's not crypto, but it is niche like that. I have a follow up round with founders, I'll have to clarify the bonus structure.
It is interesting to me though, feels like a game where I have to make my software as efficient as possible to win. That was my interpretation anyway. Not being bogged down by legacy code (at least for a while) is also super appealing to me.
criticize my business idea: wifi routers installed in places visited by tourists (bus stations, main city squares, ...) that serve interactive maps where tourists can find local businesses (hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, whatever) so you don't have to install yet another fucking app in your phone
>>105751098It's called Google Maps
>>105750953I'm sad now. That was a horrible way to end the weekend.
>>105751098>just connect to public wifi (no not that public wifi, find the correct one)May as well just make it a website at that point, at which case you're competing with google maps like the other guy said. You also have no real way to make money other data farming and deals with local businesses.
>>105751111>>105751133yeah, I know maps exist, but it's shit
but yeah, that idea is retarded. a variant would be to sell kiosks with touchscreens or something. nothing high tech though.
>>105751143or maybe install them instead of sell them... and manage shit remotely, then charge local businesses to include their info + pics or whatever in the maps.

>>105749568Getting paid was mad but working for people was gay. The longest job I've ever had was for just over a year. There have been multiple opportunities I could've sat my ass down at some hole and been comfortable. I would've been a lead developer at one company. I would've been able to work remotely at anywhere on the planet at another. For one reason or another, the conditions working these jobs became intolerable and I found myself bailing out. I'm working on my own startup now and the motherfucker is lookin' real good nigga. Hopefully, I can achieve all the qualities I've been seeking that haven't been fulfilled at any of the jobs I've worked. Prestige, purpose, freedom and financial independence. That's the dream. Reality is still real, whatever you choose to believe.
Visa Worker Tide Turning!
โข Birthright citizenship? Gone.
โข Remittance tax? Coming.
โข Hโ1B approvals for 2026? Cut by 50,000.
But it doesnโt stop there...
โข Visa overstays now trigger lifetime bans
โข Hโ1B visas revoked after 60+ days abroad... no official rule, just enforcement
โข Palantir software now tracks visa holders in real time, linking travel, payroll, and DHS records
โข Mandatory 30โday registration rule now active
โข Student and visitor visas paused, revoked, or delayed
โข 19 countries blocked from new visas over overstay rates
Applicants are panicking. Students are backing out. Visa holders are racing home. Staffing firms are losing leverage.
And Americans? They're not just exposing the system anymoreโฆ
โข They're applying to PERM jobs en masse - crashing fake job filters
โข They're documenting fraud, flooding forums with screenshots
โข And theyโre confronting the globalist politicians who sold them out - in town halls, in comment sections, and in primaries
This isnโt just a policy shift. Itโs a revolt.
The foreign labor pipeline is cracking.
And finallyโฆ itโs cracking in Americaโs favor.

Fraud and Registration Reforms
USCIS implemented a beneficiary-centric lottery system, increasing the cost of registration from $10 to $215. Eligible registrations dropped by about 26.9% year-over-year (from 470,342 in 2025 to 343,981 in 2026) .
Palantir & VISA Overstays
ICE awarded Palantir a $30 million contract for โImmigrationOS,โ a technology platform to track visa overstays and self-deportations using near real-time visibility tied to biometric and travel data .
Overstay Permanent Ban & 30โDay Mandatory Registration
The U.S. Embassy in India issued a public advisory warning that visa overstays may result in lifetime bans and noted a mandatory registration requirement for visitors overstaying 30 days .
Travel Restrictions Affecting 19 Countries
As of June 9, 2025, travel bans were implemented, full or partial, targeting 19 countries, organized as 12 with full bans and 7 with partial (e.g. banning student/visitor/new immigrant visa issuance) .

Also... Off Gemini
In general, obtaining Small Business Administration (SBA) loans as a visa holder has become significantly restricted.
Current SBA Loan Eligibility:
Restricted to Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs): As of 2025, SBA loans are limited to businesses with 100% direct and indirect ownership by U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs).
Visa Holders Generally Excluded: Individuals holding various visa types (including work or student visas), refugees, asylees, conditional LPRs, and DACA recipients are not eligible as owners, guarantors, or key employees (top-level managers) for SBA loans.
Previous Policies:
Prior Eligibility: Previously, businesses that were at least 51% owned and controlled by non-U.S. citizens lawfully in the U.S. could potentially qualify for SBA loans, depending on lender discretion.
Changes in 2025: Recent policy updates have tightened eligibility requirements, essentially locking out foreign nationals who are not U.S. citizens or LPRs.

I fell for the meme and dropped out of uni to pursue my dream to be an entrepreneur with a million dollar idea (android todo app), which imoressed a company enough to hire me as a SAP ABAP dev. Long story short, three years later, I have spent the last month building PDFs in an obscure Adobe subsystem that literally takes 3-4 seconds to register that I pressed a key. And all that for 22kโฌ/year after tax.
So... how fucked am I? Do I have any chance of getting out of this?
I am building my own stuff with java, python and local LLMs, but it's amateur at best and half of it is copypasted from Gemini, and while it does have cool functionality I doubt any company would take it seriously. Should I continue projectmaxxing and polish my stuff enough to show it to recruiters or should I double down on SAP and end up like the dinosaurs with 20yoe that make >100k after 20 years of absolute boredom?

tldr:I need some help with explaining my work to non-coders in management to justify a promotion.
I'm the only coder in a department of ~200 scientists (pharma company.) I'm probably not a 'tech worker' in the same way most of you guys are, but I'm at least tech-adjacent. I mostly build apps/scripts and pipelines for data analysis. I'm being asked to participate in what seems like a humiliation ritual to justify getting promoted because I need to explain the effort that goes into my work to upper management.
How do I explain all the time that goes into reading documentation for various libraries, trying shit that doesn't work until I find something that does, then testing use/edge cases to make sure shit doesn't break when I move it to prod? This is constantly happening due to changing requirements and feature requests from users. One example is a project I initially published 4 years ago, and despite the code base being 4x larger now than it was then, I'm basically getting a 'what have you done for us lately' vibe. This seems like something AI would be good at, but I dunno how to prompt it for this. I tried giving it my code and commit diffs, but the output is still pretty generalized and it seems to just be using the commit messages and comments in the code to generate answers. Are there better ways to approach providing a detailed account of my work?
>>105754142I moved from fully remote to hybrid last year. They even have checks to see if you're in. They would never implement 5 days a week here because most people would leave then.

>>105754175Its the involvement that brings unknowns after that everyone else is concerned about. We play our cards to the world and what happens next?
After the Gulf War 1991 and Iraq Invasion 2003ish every other country that cared about US involvement understood what we could do and what we failed at. If they were smart like russia then they focused on upgrading there military with decent tech but failed with corruption in the sense that they knew what they could do but since everyone lied and stole shit it meant they cannot do it. Not to mention lack of preparation or the lack of full commitment. We were willing to call a draft for the gulf war but decided on calling in more guard and reserves instead in lieu of getting our allies involved.
For china they are currently fixing there corruption and internal threats to avoid the iraqi infighting. There investments are heavy on administration, counter measures, 5th column and there navy. Good hard counters like the russian S400 platform.
Whatever they learned from this is of a great concern for the future. Putins political move to bring people into the BRICS due to his country losing SWIFT access whether unintended or not is a great play.
>>105754142I've had 2 days remote for the past year and a half, but as of this week I have to be on-site 4 days. It's still not too bad compared to most RTO mandates because holidays count as on-site days. And if I do half-day PTO and half-day remote, it also counts as an on-site day.

>>105754217Effectively building, maintaining, and applying software requires internalization of the theory both of the software you write, and the dependancies it consumes (for a more complete discussion see Nuar 1985.) Internalizing the theory and iterating on its application requires a great deal of time, skill, and attention. As the codebase grows the effort required to maintain and build on it grows in a non-linear way, the effort my replacement would require would be significantly larger and may even be difficult to find someone who could effectively replace me because of this.
>>105754246>We play our cards to the world and what happens next?Well no one's going to have peace talks with you anymore for starters. Trump openly said he used the ruse of peace talks to get them to drop their guard so he could bomb them easier.

>>105754217>coderif this is how you're describing yourself you're retarded
At any rate, if you cant give your management any actual numbers regarding your improvements then you're wasting your time. They want to see the dollar value you brought to the table, percent efficiency improvement, things of that nature (percent uptime might be a decent metric if you have something previously to compare it to, to justify your research time). they likely don't give a fuck about what you spent your time doing if you cannot justify it in this way.
I don't necessarily agree this is how it should be (as many things are not easily quantifiable in this way even if they do bring real value) but that is likely how your management will look at it.
>>105754290people say this but in the military where your NCOs are explicitly guys who used to be oper8orz just like you, you still end up with middle managers whose knowledge is 20 years out of date and the ones who make it that far are the ones too incompetent to thrive in their job but too backstabby and sneaky to get fired

The NATO summit was literally just European leaders trying to get favor with Trump like he's their feudal lord. 3.5% of GDP on defense (+1.5% on defense infrastructure) is what Trump wanted and it's what he got. Trump in turn changed his tone on NATO and didn't make any threats about not defending defense laggards.

>>105754353I doubt they have a kill switch (though I wouldn't put it past America). My main concern in their shoes would be the rumours that Iran shot a few of them down, that means they've likely been figured out which may as well be a kill switch.
>>105754327Obviously, but Iran received some level of warning which is why the damage appears to be limited to the entrance tunnels. No real infrastructure was damaged. Similarly, it seems like those expensive bunker busters kinda suck.
"Closing Hormuz" as far as we know involves mining and other methods to not only stop ships, but prevent traffic for an extended time period. That's why it's functional to a nuke...there's presumably additional factors that would prevent ships from simply sailing the following Friday.
I think Israel's threats are far more credible than anything coming out of Washington.

>>105754393Damage is limited to the entrance tunnels because it's a fucking mountain. There were also theories that there were no bunker busters used (milspergs pointed out that the volleys from the subs come in groups of 12, and there were 36 strikes which is coincidentally an even count, but I know nothing about that stuff).
And closing Hormuz would be easy as piss, Yemen's been doing similar for years now. The fact of the matter is if you didn't want to be hit with a functional nuke then America shouldn't have tried to bomb actual nuke(material)s.
>>105754347generals and officers are usually MBA types who might have experience controlling one unit, but even then defer to the NCOs for tactical-level control. The job of an officer in a western military is to say "Make X Happen", the NCOs say to the juniors "X has to Happen; Here's how we're doing it" and then the juniors actually make it happen.
>>105754353>F35s have a kill switch.certain other american weapons do but even if it's not the case, it's a good piece of rhetoric to use to justify paying Saab or Dassault instead of Lockheed (especially since most countries' F35 programs are now massively over-budget and under-delivering, literally, in that barely anyone is actually operating F35s yet because they haven't been shipped)

>>105754568It does happen, but only in the early growth stages of an entity. Companies, nations, militaries all follow similar cyclical patterns. A growth stage or founding led by one highly competent man or collection of men on a mission, who lay solid pragmatic foundations and recruit effective leaders and engineers who are committed to the job. In this period everyone knows what everyone else is doing and the best are promoted efficiently. The organization is a success, it makes it to maturity.
Maturity is where it declines. The old guard are retired, they are replaced by clueless bureaucrats who only understand what they are doing on an academic basis, they similarly can only hire and promote others on the same superficial basis. Atrophy sets in everywhere, bloat, eventually, death. You'll notice megacorporations don't ebb and flow, growing and reducing in size along with whatever their revenue is at any given time, they are suffocated by a mass of useless coattailers and die completely. Organizations aren't efficient by definition, they grow, and they must die, because they can't simply shrink.
Kind of like building a new house vs renovating an old one too. Always easier to start fresh with a blueprint and a process than to fuck about with a big rotting corpse and figure out how to fix everything in bits.

And the worst part is that in SAP, due to its extremely closed down and proprietary nature, even if you try to learn stuff on your own, if you haven't used it professionally in any project it gets dismissed during interviews.
Once you hit the 8-10 yoe mark it does get substantially better moneywise, but only if you don't blow your brains out with a shotgun out of boredom before that.

All of the other eat good and exercise shit is minor compared to figuring out what your career is really about and improving your lot in life with it. If your a trash man your entire life then why not run the company ect

What is infuriating is when your employer insists that you come into the office so you can hop onto a teams call to work with people in other offices scattered across the world.
Then someone complains about the difficulty of finding good meeting times that overlap all the US time zones and new delhi.
I could kind of see a sliver of justification for the RTO if we all worked in the same physical office, but this is just the worst of both worlds.
After a one hour drive, having to listen to two jeets argue at 9am about nothing of relavnce to me is really not a great way to start Monday. I don't know how I am going to make it through years of this shit.

Anyone else have a similar background: like 130 IQ, straight As high school, good college, but ended up in tech due to the sheer expedience of it?
Even though I'm a 30yo millionaire and still making $250-300k/yr (1 layoff and it goes to $0/yr or [unemployment_bucks]/yr), many days I find myself wishing I had just become a doctor chilling in the hospital middle manning doxycycline prescriptions for degenerate Tinder chads with syphilis or the Clap.
Apparently performing lasik surgery is as easy as copying ~10 phone numbers. Sure, you need to get those 10 numbers copied EXACTLY RIGHT every time, but it's that easy. I think what I've discovered about myself is that I was willing to put up with the bullshit of classes and gets good grades out of sheer discipline, if I eventually got to just have a chilller life, but working in tech is like being in math class for decades. not necessarily some crazy hard one, but math class + jeets nonetheless.
I didn't really have the kind of family that was going to pay for even all my undergrad, let alone give me a normal ass life while I go to 4 year professional school, so pretty much GG for USA. If I really cared that much for the medical life, I could pay cash for a philippines med school and just practice there lol, but my 3.0 undergard GPA in USA is trash now. I was an A/B student before forcing it with computer science (ok and I was a mentally ill incel lol)
...what do? I haven't impregnated my chick yet nor have I married. If I'm going to do some big swtich like law school, an MBA or even just opening a muay thai gym....I figure it's easiest before all that and I'm 32 now. Now's a good to switch while slightly young.
Last idea: if I get laid off, I'm speccing into AI powered indie dev. the guy doing companion apps for cyberpunk: red and Mothership quit his job to full time that. does he make even half my pay? no, but it's "his" and the work is probably much better.
>>105755962>I literally just want an environment that lets me program and doesn't care about anything else but outputdo you have the kind of background that would let you interview at a place like Jane Street, Hudson River Trading, Citadel, etc?
>I don't get how a fun hobby can turn into the gayest industry dealing with psychopathic tech bros, bureaucratic middle managers, and autistic sweatsIt is amazing how shit they made WORKING this as a profession. My guess for a while is that all the bureaucratic middle managers, in a sane society, would be under us. I don't mean the technical engineering manager, but all the lazy girl jobs should never have been framed or sold as >= engineers.
>>105755962>gayest industry dealing with psychopathic tech bros, bureaucratic middle managers, and autistic sweats(continued)
another ingredient to the mess is that, with technical work, these people in other roles just have ZERO actual usefulness many times, but are injected into the company. So then they have to LARP as touching something in a meaningful and the LARP lowers the actual workers' quality of life.
A decade in tech and I'm not sure anyone that wasn't an engineer or former engineer line manager has brought much to the table for me. OK colleen the product manager at this one startup was great, because she knew I was the rainmaker and she put english -> cantonese translations into the CRM for me. She made herself submissively available to me in a way that made us both better.
So...1 in ~10 years. not looking great
My company is a fucking mess and higher ups just delegate all work in developers under the pretense of "ownership". I'm tired of running after people to get the information I need to do my job. And then when shit hits the fan because literally no one from management has done their job and every update backfires nothing happens, then there's a bug on something I did, on a codebase that would make your average Pajeet look like Terry Davies and then that's a big fucking deal.
I want to grab my manager and bash his skull.
>>105755962I forget the exact wording of the popular saying but

>>105756228>My company is a fucking mess and higher ups just delegate all work in developers under the pretense of "ownership".I'm sorry that I laughed at this. I'm certain the environment is shit, because the same buzzword was used when management was coping with their own shortcomings a decade ago in my career. Is there a circle jerk CEO/management forum where they trade tips on getting engineers to be the ones that feel bad about their incapability to "own" the situation (as the literal owner in many cases)?
Ownership bro! 0% equity bro!
I need you to OWN- just stfu.
I'll be glad to eventually never talk to another Indian or European unless I'm on vacation, one day.
>>105756233>sick larp did you have gpt write it for youI'll respond like an autist (genuinely and explanatory): what about that sounds like a LARP? When people on 4chan hear some of my numbers, they call it a LARP, but it's just my life lol. Also fully written by me with zero LLM.
A lot of people I went to school with are the types that immediatlely go to FAGMAN, Uber, etc so many are millionaires just from working the job + SP500, because we started in 2015. My $300k salary is actually low compared to many of theirs. A woman I knew from some senior year classes spent 9yr at Pinterest and recently signed on as an M1 at Meta. M1 meta in bay area is easily $500-800k/yr with ability to get things up to ~$1.2M/yr with years of internal experience. not even a promo. just progressing within the M1 role. At least I make my income remotely. that's the only cope
Clearly the job market is a shambles and I have to make up a meme startup if i want to work. What business should I get into if all my experience is in using computers in a nautical context
>>105747838 (OP)I bet he 'bummed' that cig off someone

I think I may have burnt my single direct report out
>was honest and told him layoffs are still ongoing so keep working hard
>just told him to sit tight and nod yes to everything, even the dumb requirements and just try to figure it out when we get to it.

>tell him that I can't really do anything about his roadblockers because it's stuck with upper management
>I said we might be able to open a senior position with him a couple months ago but the whole layoff situation is looking awkward to re-engage that.
He's been looking pretty irate lately and most of my 1:1 discussion with me is just dead silent. Any way to fix things?
Second day in a row without coffee. It's amazing how much that black bullshit makes people tolerable.
>>105756610>so this is what working is like huhno. that's what
Literally any shmuck can post a job ad for a "software engineer" and offer whatever wage.
I can put up a Linkedin job ad for "Orthopedic Surgeon $32/hour" and if some idiot shows up, interviews, and accepts that is wild, but ya he'd be a surgeon making less than some bartenders. A proper surgeon has the know-how to jump right past these shit offers though.
As an engineer, you have to vet and be selective, just like the companies are. I know it's tough when you are despserate, but desperation is what leads to this exploitation. If you're actually making Mcdonalds salary and learning nothing in a shit codebase, you should quit or get fired ASAP and just deliver food or whatever until you get a good job.
My last job hunt, I cancelled a final round interview for a $400k+ job because I didn't think their engineers looked healthy and I didn't care about an extra $100k pre tax per year to put up with that. but I've also coded for $12.25/hr and it sucked ass, so I get it.
TL;DR: only interview with companies that actually pay engineering pay. consider these McWage dev shops to not even exist. unemployment in tech or proper salary is the way.
>>105756913>Without coffeeI'm a person who is likely AuDHD and my brain is too fucked up to focus without a stimulant. I've gone without caffeine for about a month and all that happened is that I became far more irritable and far less productive. However, an excess of caffeine fucks with my quality of sleep and I'm inevitably far less productive anyway. The schedule I have now is from Monday - Friday I'm pumping matcha lattes, having the caffeine act as a stimulant and the L-theanine balance it out. On the weekend I drop it cold turkey, power through a severe headache and a disorientating lack of focus until Monday. That's my life now.
