Humorous thing is, WDDM was technically still based off XPDM (XDDM version found in XP). It was just that XDDM needed such heavy reworking Microsoft gave it a new name, WDDM with Longhorn development and it became truly a new project from how much work needed to be done. Xorg was and still is a mess.
