My CPU is 15 years old.
It's an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T.
I have it running at 4GHz.
I think it's going to last forever, same as my old Intel q6600 that is running at 3.5GHz.
Why don't they make CPU's like these anymore?

your cpu is dogshit and slopware are getting slower faster than hardware is getting faster.
you're just not doing anything with your computer otherwise you would realize how dogshit it is.

Incredibly based anon. I was using a 4770 and an X5680 on the side until recently.
Can find used Z690 and Z790 boards used for like $50 though, so cheap you might as well upgrade if it's convenient.

cpus becaome faster, more efficent and having a better Instructions per cycle, the chip in my handheld pc, the ryzen z1 extreme runs absolute rings around that old phenom while using nearly 1/4 of the power, like sure its interesing you got a pc to last as long as this but the power usage difference alone probably outweighs not upgrading at this point

the cpu development now is even slower than it was 15 years ago
you could've bought a budget i3/ryzen 3 five years ago and it would still hold up perfectly well as long as you have enough ram
that's why windows 11 is doing the forced obsoletion thing, they're forcing people to upgrade their hardware even though it's not necessary

Couldn't be a jeet. They'd pick the shittest new-ish CPU/GPU as long as it could run their precious AI. If it came down to OPs CPU or a 600mhz e-waste Intel Atom/Celeron he'd pick the Atom/Celeron CPU every time.

that CPU was a piece of shit the minute that Sandybridge came out, Thubans pulled around 300W+ of power under load while still being 1/3 the speed of a 2500k that only required around 80W. Pic related, my old 1055T that I had back then which was decently OC'd but even then it was literally a spaceheater and didn't support things like AVX. You can literally find faster CPUs on those HP thin clients that people throw away or donate to GoodWill

this is from THW on a stock 1090T, not far off from 300W if you OC it a bit. I remember my system pulling around 430W in just gaming workloads and when I swapped it to a 3930k that number went down by quite a bit which I found surprising considering how much performance I gained.

nanometers. smaller is better (denser) and worse (fatigue).

>As chips become smaller and more densely packed with transistors, the thermal management becomes increasingly challenging. Transient thermal loading, which occurs during active cycling conditions, can lead to fatigue crack formation and propagation within the metallisation layers of power semiconductor devices. This is a critical reliability concern, especially in high-performance applications where chips are subjected to frequent thermal cycles.

However, the 5000 series cpus are in a similar class. They are a peak (perhaps below older silicon, but a relative peak on the way down).

Not now but I changed it two times already. Originally it was the NZXT H440 but it was too big and kind of hot

>Why don't they make CPU's like these anymore?

They do.
If you bought a CPU made in the past 15 years, for most applications, there's very/no reason to upgrade.
IMO the biggest issue with older desktop CPUs is not the data processing part of the CPU itself but the supported peripherals/busses.

oh you mean the i7, the i7 will oc further, but it also becomes a house fire above 3.6-4ghz, Unless you're willing to go for a full custom water loop, I don't think it matters much because it will still be slower than the phenom under 3.8-3.9ghz

Depends on your workload. I like the fact that these older chips don't have built in spyware.

Yeah, and the Q6600 could run at that speed no problem.

The problem with pre-Sandy cpus is that you can only max them out with 8-16GB RAM, maybe there are exceptions that allow for 24GB but you miss out on useful stuff you could do with 32GB or more. For practical minimalism there's no reason why 64-128GB builds would ever need replacing as long as it isn't for external reasons, i.e. the printer you want to use for eternity has cartridges discontinued or some shitty new port replaces HDMI/DP leaving you without a way for video output. There's still a lot to exploit and abuse about modern software in regarding older servers.

your thinking pre nehalem, lga775 is limited to 16gb, but nehalem can do 48gb on x58 triple channel boards, and phenom ii supports 8gb dimms as well on anything with a ddr3, though the memory controller has a rough time of it.

listed specs reflect the time they were written, so long as the memory controller can address more memory larger dimms will work, even if they didnt exist yet.
