>In its latest sustainability report, Google said its carbon emissions had increased 51% between 2019 and 2024.
>New research aims to debunk even that enormous figure and provide context to Google’s sustainability reports, painting a bleaker picture. A report authored by non-profit advocacy group Kairos Fellowship found that, between 2019 and 2024, Google’s carbon emissions actually went up by 65%. What’s more, between 2010, the first year there is publicly available data on Google’s emissions, and 2024, Google’s total greenhouse gas emissions increased 1,515%, Kairos found. The largest year-over-year jump in that window was also the most recent, 2023 to 2024, when Google saw a 26% increase in emissions just between 2023 and 2024, according to the report.
>The energy the tech giant has needed to purchase to power its data centers alone increased 820% since 2010, according to Kairos’s research, a figure that is expected to expand in the future as Google rolls out more AI products. Between 2019 and 2024, emissions that came primarily from the purchase of electricity to power data centers jumped 121%, the report’s authors said.
>“In absolute terms, the increase was 6.8 TWh, or the equivalent of Google adding the entire state of Alaska’s energy use in one year to their previous use,” said Sugerman.
>Based on Google’s current trajectory, the Kairos report’s authors say the company is unlikely to meet its own 2030 deadline without a significant push from the public. There are three categories of greenhouse gas emissions – called Scopes 1, 2 and 3 – and Google has only meaningfully decreased its Scope 1 emissions since 2019, according to the Kairos report. Scope 1 emissions, which include emissions just from Google’s own facilities and vehicles, account for only 0.31% of the company’s total emissions.

There also isn't enough land for solar, wouldn't make a dent in usage and you've now made the place even more complicated to power, since the infrastructure is designed for 2 separate but equally capable power feeds.

Solar is extremely redundant when the water cycle is already powered by solar energy.
Where do you think the energy ultimately comes from to fill the lakes?

They built dams in SC that naturally flooded and created lake Murray and Moultrie. They are filled from rivers which are driven by rainfall and by extension solar.
Afaik the lakes are in good shape and outflow isn't a concern.

I'm not saying you can't have both, but its more that its not necessary.
You don't need actual solar panels near that area in SC because the man made lakes provide in excess already and is completely renewable. The energy used to evaporate water that falls as rain to fill the rivers and lakes ultimately comes from the sun.

Sure if panels where almost free then fuck the lakes and fuck Dominion Energy but its not really worth it.

I guess the confusion stems from the idea that the lakes are filled with rainwater and river flows, which the energy to do that ultimately comes from the sun.
I guess that's hard to grasp as many people think hydro is just water falling trough a dam but they never think where the energy came from to get that water into the reservoir/lake.
I know some systems are pumped hydro but the lakes in SC aren't.

I mean most harvestable energy "comes from the sun" by that broad definition. Everything from oil to a potato battery would qualify. There are some oddballs like nuclear or geothermal but it isn't really unique of hydro power that it originates from the sun

anon, we all know about the cycle of water. but, guess what, non-pumped, "natural" hydro is not enough in all cases or all places, and it has its own set of problems and constraints, just like solar or other sources of energy. but solar is cheap, plenty, and you don't need to wait for rain to get it (though you do want sunny summer days, otherwise you'll only collect 10-30% of that during cloudy days)

>but, guess what, non-pumped, "natural" hydro is not enough in all cases or all places
It's enough here
>nd you don't need to wait for rain to get it
It's operates 24/7, there is enough capacity in the lake to handle when it's not raining or even when there is a dry season
You don't build hydro plants where it's expected to run dry regularly
>but solar is cheap
Not cheap enough here is my point.
I guess it's rare to have such a large hydro plant but that's probably why Google decided to build a DC in the aera even if SC is not at all the state for tech to take advantage of such abundant renewable power

If you apply the logical extreme, sure.

But you really have to beat it into these people's head here that you don't need solar with the resources available here, the state is taking advantage of solar energy just in a different way beyond giving money to solar panel and battery manufacturers
From what it seems it's like everyone thinks solar is a magical fix all that is worth it everywhere and the solution to DC power usage.

Google is already a step ahead with placing a DC with access to renewables and is still expanding such a DC. Solar isn't the only way for renewables

nuclear can't even produce variable power during the day. you still need other sources of (variable power) energy with nuclear
also, you are still wasting at least 50% of the energy produced.

Actually, most of the electricity is still sourced from hydrocarbons. Fossil fuel is a misnomer.
There is no such thing as "clean energy". It is thermodynamically impossible. There's always a cost.

This combined with the sun's activity levels reaching their cyclic peak right now is why the weather is as skewed as it is. That underwater volcano eruption was on a completely ridiculous scale. It pumped out so much heat that it raised the global ocean temperature by 0.5c. Doesn't sound like much but that's a LOT more evaporated water going into the air.

Until you realise that all nuclear waste we ever created will be around long before humanity is gone.
People don't get why Germans are so anti-nuclear until they learn their history of how a fucking kike brought a salt mine (which in theory would be perfect to store nuclear waste) because salt is self-healing, thick and abundant and made a profitable business dumping nuclear waste there. Until it rained a little bit more than normal, and the mine flooded and melted part of the salt from the cave, allowing a massive amount of nuclear waste to leach into the ground. Now living there is considered a form of cancer speedrun.
>b-but modern facilities
Yeah, modern, built in the 60's when people thought that reinforced concrete would literally last forever and now discovered that 50 years was a more realistic time.
