/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think youโ€™re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

>What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

>Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Uhhhh since all my LXC are having their ports forwarded through the bridge by the proxmox host is it possible to install a fail2ban-like thing on the host itself so it takes care of all the ports or should it be done inside each lxc? fail2ban does it by reading the logs no? actually I have no idea how it works. Do people use ufw on the host? I just activated the firewall option on the node and all the lxc's so far, how do people secure it?

perimeter firewall with fail2ban because your connections truncate through there. firewalling inside of proxmox has a lot less nuance than host based firewalls. you shouldn't be doing your firewalling within proxmox if you can help it. if you're trying to properly implement host based firewalls then learning iptables fully is your best bet. if you want to be lazy and dont care about detailed fine tuning then go with ufw inside the host. ufw tends to spawn a bunch of extraneous rulesets as it abstracts iptables away.

>>105783226
why do people buy ubiquiti? let them die. you can buy a "router" (really more of an internet gateway device than a router unless you're running frrouting) that has openWRT and is also wireless at the same time. i'd recommend those shitty chinese devices like glinet because they actually have full features compared to anything ubiquiti shits out.

im running my c9117 right now completely for free, dont even need an entitlement to download code for it.

for the aruba it's cloud connected so you need an account and it might be already assigned to someone else so it's much more complicated. i don't know a ton about it. i think it can get locked to another owner in such a way where it would be a pain in the ass to upgrade it. when you buy one (the aruba ap22) it might be best to ask the seller if it's deregistered. someone else can correct me here i'm sure.

WRONG. get fancurve, its the speedfan of 202x
I also use a proprietary motherboard with basically ZERO pwm control out of the box. fancuve doesn't care. its got a dickload of libraries that can find my MBs fan controllers and steal possession of them anyway. my threadripper went from always idling at 80 to idling at 46, because I can ramp up the quieter CPU tower fans while ramping way down the intakes.
get this software. INSTALL IT NOW. unlike panptikon its literally should be on every pc you own!

optane drives are nice and all, but making something be a boot drive for truenas or similar is mind meltingly stupid to me. it's wasting precious lanes on something that afaik gets loaded into ram one time. i hear people just run usb drives in parity even though its unsupported and that seems like a much better idea to me, however, I guess if you have the spare PCIE lanes it might not be the worst idea. in my case though every component on my board is filled except for a few random usb headers and the PCI port.

I run bind9 to control a zone for an imaginary tld that will literally never be accepted by icann and point unbound to query that for that specific tld. On top of that I run step-ca to automate certificate distribution and renewal with my own root-ca.
A bit of work to set up sure but it just works and I'm self reliant which to me is the entire point of homelabing/selfhosting.

I said it's not the end of the world if I do have to deal with one.
In fact, I was trying out Piwigo and I ended up setting up a MySQL database to handle it, so I CAN maintain it if it comes down to it, especially since I can run both through separate Docker containers. It's just not something I'm all too familiar with.
If I can figure out which search result for Panoptikon is the one you're referring to, I'll check it out.

My HS is a thinkcentre M900 with an i5 6500, 8GB RAM, 256GB NVMe SSD for Proxmox host + VMs/LXCs.
Recently added a 1TB SATA SSD for data and 8TB external HDD for backups. Been working pretty well for me the past years but I've been dicking around with it and adding more services and the 8GB RAM is quickly becoming inadequate.
Question is, do I upgrade to 16GB or 32GB? Probably single stick because less power draw.
Thinking 32GB might be rather overkill for such a small, limited system (especially storage wise). Or would there be a good use for so much RAM that I don't know of yet? Big RAM cache or something of the sort maybe?

I didn't do anything but look at the files so I am not sure if looking at them magically made them work or if the script uses ssh internally for some reason.

Anyway the real problem now is getting to the :3940 port from the HOST because its a fucking truenas install. I have no idea if the container even works because youre supposed to configure the program from the host.

my current strategy is trying to spin up a firefox container but that cant access shit because my network isnt certified. if theres a smarter way to get to 127.0.0.1:3940 or whatever it is from truenas let me know. I already tried port forwarding but it didnt work even with it enabled.

Why don't you change the compose file and expose 3940 as a port to your network? you should be able to access it from outside. Just make sure to rebuild the containers

i thought I tried to do that but i may simply be too retarded to know how. i thought because the 3939 port is listening on 80 I could change the other one to 80 instead and it would become doable. but this didn't seem to work at all. I could just not know enough about containers to know how to do this right. i did try asking ai about it, but it got really confused by the fact that I was trying to have it get me to the port as the host. It's like trying to ask it to draw a full wine glass it doesn't matter how many times you say truenas doesn't come with a web browser, that's all it knows how to do.

Based.
I have the M910q, with 16 GB ram and 16 gb swap.
It's great all rounder for home server.
Honestly, I had proxmox setup and I found I'm always limited with ram, so I moved to container based solution.
But do go for 16gb x2 option if you want to keep the current setup.
what are you running on it anyway that uses ram that way?
I have windows docker that doesn't even uses more than 3 GB when fully booted.

Yeah, laptop disc drives are a standard* form factor, so the tray just slides in. But drive must be 2.5 inch unless you're willing to do some extension cable fuckery.

*drive height is not standard. Not sure if this affects compatibility much. But trays come in different heights too.

I used it for few years, but eventually I switched to mini PC.
Nothing wrong with it as long as you tune battery charging.
Mine problem was high thermals and too big (it was 12") for my specific needs.
Cables were a problem since the charging and RJ45 were on opposite sides.
you can use one if you really need one and not wanting to spend anything.

any ideas? is it just a shit router? should i install openwrt or something?

Looks like your wan port is fine
you should download and rewrite its factory firmware just in case, takes 2 minutes
also turn off any EEE/powersaver settings in switches along the way and in the nics settings connected to the router, eventually set them to 1gbps fullduplex instead of autonegotiation
if that doesn't work get a $9 ethernet tester and check all the cables
if that doesnt work then that archer is fried, replace it

It doesn't care what your files are named. It generates a pHash for each file and you can search for the file various metadata databases with that and import the metadata. Alternatively, if you know the name of the scene you can search for it too and it might find it. If it finds it, it imports the title, performers, studio, tags etc etc.

If you're too poor to contract an IT department for the task you're irrelevant.
If you're irrelevant, then you DIY with Windows Server, a basi Linux server, or something like OMV or TrueNAS.

Alternatively just shut the fuck up and pay the paypig retard idiot faggot tax for Synology device + Synology branded drives and just learn to enjoy being a retarded faggot paypig and learn to enjoy your time on their shaft as they fuck you. At the end of the day, their products still work, they're just becoming extremely draconian and anti-consumer rights. You either reject their business practice or settle for it. Sometimes it is okay to be the retarded paypig faggot. People do it all the time. Why manage your own email server when you can just be a paypig and rent one?

Synology is shit not because they don't work but because they're assholes.
They're as shit as any other big tech company these days. They're still okay to use for the task if you're fine paying extra.

The exact model is: amazon com/dp/B004IMKTX4

Had 3 of them since 2012 in my previous server build on an Antec 900, with an ATX board.

Since I mostly build ITX systems and that case was my own main rig, when I changed it to a nCase M1, decided to build my server on an ITX server as well.
Turns out I could fit 2 of the 3 inside alongside the Asrock Rack ITX motherboard.
Then I just did custom screw holes in case and bays.

Those are kinda pricey, guess they're worth it since you can carry them around from case to case as things evolve though.
I assume you just drilled holes around the case to screw it in instead of drilling into the bays?

I know they're kinda pricey, but are completely made of metal and looked sick on that build.

There are cheaper alternatives tho.
The case itself supports 6x 3.5" (not hotswappable) bays by default

I posted that multiple times, but it's almost 1:1 the yaml on the GitHub. I changed the files folder but the problems don't seem related to it. If there's a way to expose one of the ports to the outside I don't know how to do that and said that already. I'm not sure what more information you need. I posted the error log before.

When people recommend X RAM for Y HDD capacity in TrueNAS is this for RAW storage or usable?

For example would 64GiB RAM meet this recommended amount for 80TB RAW (4x20TB) drives in a Z1 where I'd use only 48 TB (60TB - 20% to leave some free space on the volume) or not meet that or is it plenty?

Okay so I think what happened last time? I got lucky. I was doing a search for panoptikon.log using winscp and landed on it first try. Also had way less crap in docker and for some reason it doesn't go away when you delete docker containers!!!?!!? Anyway I left winscp be to go spin up the container from start down and it ran. In other words. I think I landed on the file it needed to run or something and because I was there it prevented it from being destroyed or something? Then I started it. Because I have attempted several searches and the files disappear and appear as the images are spun up and down, with the result that unless it was running smoothly anyway, there's no way for me to use scp to get an idea of what is happening because the image isn't persistent. Not sure what to try next

I'm wondering if nested virtualization would offer poor performance compared to VM in hypervisor?
BTW, this isn't for anything like gaming.
I'm fine with wine/steam+sunshine.
I just need to run office suite, I tried this

And couldn't really get it to work.
So I thought this would be easier to do.

None, I enabled TrueNAS' dumb app shit so the docker daemon is enabled, then went to the console as root, git pulled everything and did everything through the console
>What did you do to your compose file to get it to run.
I modified a couple of things, mainly exposed panoptikon-ui-private's 6339 port, mapped to 6344, completely bypassing nginx
>Are you sure you are on fangtooth? V25
I have no fucking idea, this seems to be master so most likely is even newer than that.

Here's the compose file: https://pastebin.com/vcxkV42c
You basically have to change ./files to where you're storing your data.
panoptikon-ui-public and nginx services can be removed as well since you won't be exposing this to the public.
It is accessible via ip:6344

I guess there's no gayrenteed this will run in dockge or whatever but after 2 weeks trying to do this myself I don't care if I have to migrate this by hand.
If you don't have any idea what version of truenas you're even using other than latest, I'm gonna assume you left all the ui stuff and perams alone besides the docker daemon? Also maybe you installed also the Nvidia drivers to fix the cuda error? I made my entire dataset available via permissions but it had no effect. I'm gonna hope this runs on an actual pool though because I don't really want it running on the boot volume itself.
Hopefully it plays nice with wiregaurd but even if it doesn't having this on my home network is more than good enough. I can finally give my server all my autistic chan jpegs and not have to live in a Lego bin of a computer.

This is a VM so no nvidia drivers. Forgot to add you need to uncomment the deploy section from the compose file

an old ass PCIe 2.0 x8 HBA can almost handle running all SATA SSD/s on full bandwidth. that would be 4.8Gbit/s being limited by the 4.0Gbit/s bandwidth of the PCIe lane. but you will realistically never reach that and HDDs need a lot less bandwidth.
usually the HBAs can handle 8 drives at once.
also make sure the card is flashed to IT Mode.

I have a 1TB QLC SSD that I use as an occasional backup. Will do a cleanup later but for now it's almost full. I sync it every 3-4 months, then it goes into cold mobile storage (my backpack).
I remember read something like you should plug these things into an on computer every once in a while because the data is held via electrical charge and they slowly lose that charge so you essentially have to recharge them.

1) Is that true or bullshit? If true,
2) What exactly do I have to do to 'refresh' the charge on them? Is just plugging them in to an on computer enough, or do I actually have to interact with the content somehow. Is a full virus scan enough, or something more in-depth?
3) How long does it need this charge and how often? I imagine QLC would need it more often/longer than TLC because it's more precarious?

It's not my main backup. It's a secondary backup (i.e. 3rd copy) of just the most crucial stuff.

And it has to be a mobile copy, I can't keep all 3 copies in one place. So the main copy (24/7 NAS) is at home. The primary backup (2nd copy) is also at home, at big 8TB drive. Cold, disconnected from all data and power).
So this secondary backup (3rd copy) should be in a different location. Ok while I'm at home it's also at home, but when I'm out it's with me. If my house is burgled or burns down while I'm at work, at least I have this 3rd copy of the most important data. Not all my terabytes of Linux distros but oh well.

And so because it's a mobile backup, I thought SSD was best? Even in an off and disconnected state, isn't constant movement, being bumped around even in a padded bag, not good for a 2.5" HDD long term? Fragile mechanical thing.

It doesn't care. If it exists in the database, and has the right phash, it will find it

https://guidelines.stashdb.org/docs/faq_getting-started/stashdb/whats-a-phash/.

Collisions do happen, you don't want to just turn the metadata scraping on automatically for your whole library. You want to be sort of methodical about it.

A 7200 rpm hdd will give you a max of ~250 megabytes pretty much best case scenario (ie sequential read at the platter edge) which is 2 gigabits. A SINGLE lane of pcie 3 can do 1 gigaBYTE which is 8 gigaBITS, and full duplex (can do the same speed bidirectionally and symmetrically, so reads and writes don't take up each others bandwidth).

if I were you, I would do a fresh write of all the data you want to back up each time, shouldn't be a big deal since it's only every few months and onto an SSD

I think it's ok as an extra backup, but consider using backup software or a filesystem that does checksums or other data integrity checks

You are in the category of 0.00001% of humans on earth who owns a multi-bay DAS unit.
You are in the 0.00001% of humans who own a DAS unit that isn't satisfied with a 2, 4, 6, 8 10 or 12 bay unit.
Do the math.
These are NICHE products, they're only realistically worth maybe 25% of that price but you're basically tipping the manufacturer and saying "Thank you for making such a thing! I appreciate it!" when you buy these. This is not a joke.

I have probably masturbated more times this year than there are 9-bay DAS units on planet earth.
To clarify I mean this literally. I'm talking about 9's, not "can fit 9 or more" but actual 9-bays. This is incredibly rare hardware anon and you must realize this before it will ever make sense.

For what it's worth when you look at something like this you should consider looking at actual enterprise equipment instead. You can get big JBODs and HBAs to store more drives for less with more off-the-shelf components and more universal hardware. Any server rack with 9x5.25" bays can house 15x 3.5" drives with 5-in-3 cages for example and that can be quite compact when paired with an ITX motherboard.

Gotta say I am disappointed in this write up after implementing it along side a fully debugged set up as intended. It sucks. I pretty much knew it was bad and not what I wanted by looking at it. However I don't really blame you. Beggers can't be choosers.

This is just a segway to a short rant.

Everything about truenas, docker compose, and containerization had led me to believe that I should never ever get into the command line. Personally I am moderately comfortable doing it, however, it's not supported, you aren't supposed to. The yaml and etc should be fully featured and just week

That's the point. The reality though was that docker was incapable of creating the missing folders for the application except as root. In other words, in order to install a program in 2025 the year of our fucking lord, you are expected in a Linux environment to just build the folder system yourself, despite the fact that neither docker, nor portainer, nor truenas has any gui ie supported method to create directories for things. I know what a directory is. I know how to do all of this. However I kind of had the common sense assumption that people have stopped finding this novel and fun since I was born at the turn of the 80s into 90s. Installing things from then and now had never been such a permissions nightmare where the only supported method was duck tape and glue. It makes me wonder what the fuck the difference is between dockge, arcane, or portainer, or the truenas apps system. They all seem equally bad to me.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should use? I feel like I'm at a turning point here. I can start dumping apps into the existing ecosystem, or I can start up a docker program to subdivide further. I'm already on 25.04.1 due to hoping updooting would solve any of this crap. Instead if just introduced a bug to make the shells cli mode lag to the high heavens.

TLDR: Whats best for 25.x truenas, dockge, arcana, trueapps, or portainer.

Think I fucked up somewhere. Got my homelab with pihole and caddy, both with tailscale installed. Got a dynamic DNS domain and automatic certs setup in caddy, so I made a "wildcard" DNS A record in pihole (with custom dnsmasq config) to point everything on *.home.mydomain.tld to caddy for reverse proxying. Tailscale is configured to use pihole as DNS server (via its tailscale IP). Works great at home but as soon as I tried to connect from outside my lan I realized a problem: pihole will always return caddy's local IP for *.home.mydomain.tld, while it actually should return caddy's tailscale IP, since caddy will reverse proxy to to either a local IP or tailscale IP based on the remote IP.
Is there a way to resolve the same domain to different IPs based on the remote IP(/subnet) in pihole?

I have had 3 servers at home running docker swarm and glusterfs for shared storage for the last 8 years.
I recently switched to drbd multi master, under lvmlockd and corosync/ pacemaker. Performance of all my apps is 10x faster moving away from gluster, but if a node is fenced, it won't rejoin the drbd volume (each of the live peers denies the fence node from rejoining until i bring down the whole cluster and resync with all nodes in slave status. Also if one is fenced it caused a fence loop with all three fencing eachother until I disable the cluster and being then up at the same time.
I just setup qdevice, but to early to tell if that fixed the issue. Any one know what I'm doing wrong?

It has a nice ui, but is still obtuse enough where you may as well set up zfs and smb yourself. The apps and virtualization are shit. Proxmox is a much better solution being a proper hyperviser. You could even use truenas in a vm. Even without an add in hba you will have a sata controller you can pass through. Or individually pass through the pysical disks. I'll admit that Proxmox's zfs configuration in the webui is lackluster, but it's surprisingly easy to use in the console.

anon that just fucked your sister here
I get your point and this is totally panoptikon's fault, not TrueNAS' nor Docker so don't expected an upgrade will magically make things work as you wanted to.

My suggestion: Ideally you should keep your devices divided by role, that said, your TrueNAS should be just for storage, and you should have a different device for running containers (or said "apps") that access TrueNAS. I'm aware however that this is not entirely possible so, I'd go with a bare Debian system and configure everything from scratch, install Docker + Portainer and call it a day.

TLDR: Just go bare Debian + Docker. This is how I have my system and werks pretty well

a ubiquiti employee raped enterpriseschizo's mom or something. his hatred is visceral. be prepared.

Their AP's are much better than equivalent TP-Link. I use the U6-Enterprise one (sub $200). Doesn't have wifi 7 but wifi6e is really fucking fast and uses significantly less power when running an AP over 50ft of cat6 as it negotiates at 2.5G and not 10g over ethernet. I also like how you can run the AP controller software on Opnsense via plugin. Some people don't like having that on their firewall, but I do.

The Cisco AP's are great, is you are smart enough to uncuck them from ebay and know how to config from shell commands. Their hardware is usually best in class.

The U6e is pretty darn good hardware wise and passes the WAF, if you have such concerns.

IT skills got me laid a lot, sort of:

>Some professional mid chick moved into apartment next to me.
>I said "hi" first day, she said "hi" whatever
>knock on door 2 days later, asked if I could help with something. Said her internet went down after install and if I had outage. Mine was fine.
>offered to help
>go into her apartment, and she had the typical normie-rape shit IT equipment from the ISP.
>I say "fuck this" clean up the shit and let her borrow my old OpenWRT modem and get it working
>thank you so much anon. you're welcome whatever. tell her to send the old shit back to ISP before they start billing her, etc.
>asks for my phone number, no problem
>next night calls me over to hang out
>we bone, but she has boyfriend, whatever
>she puts my name in the cell phone as cable guy
>I laugh and tell her the pic related Lebowski joke

Still booty calls me to this day. Although I am not autistic, so I think my charm is what got me laid, but hooking her up to working wifi got me in there.

Are there network switches that also double as KVM switches?

Trying to figure out how to handle my desk setup, where I have

>Laptop 1, which I intend to primarily use with the video out to a monitor via HDMI
>Lapop 2, has a broken keyboard and wifi card, needs wired LAN cable
>Keyboard, would need to use with both laptops due to 1 being set up with external monitor and 2's broken internal keyboard, and I don't wanna unplug and replug it with both
>A mouse, which likewise I would like to use with both laptops
>a 4 bay NAS
>A Network switch I still need to buy, so the ethernet/LAN cable going from the router/modem in the office through the walls into my room can link to the switch, then the switch is linked to the NAS, and Laptop 2 can connect to the switch/the home network/the NAS via LAN, as could laptop 1, though I might use USB C since I think that has faster transfer then the laptop's ethernet ports

So like, are there network switches I could also plug the mouse and keyboard into via USB, then take two other USB cables and connect those to laptop 1 where the switch is acting as a passthrough for the keyboard/mouse, but then I'd also use wireless dongles(?) to connect the switch to laptop 2, where a physical button on the network switch or that's plugged into the network switch can swap the keyboard/mouse signal to go to laptop 2 instead of laptop 1?

If not, can a standalone KVM switch even do that? I'm new to this and most of the ones I see seem to advertise themselves as USB or wireless/bluetooth, rather then talking about being able to do one for one connection and one for the other (and I would specifically want a wired/low latency connection for the mouse/keyboard to laptop 1, ideally)

I'm running into weird issue.
Does having multiple compose.yml in the same directory override each other when it's being run?
I'm using this
https://github.com/qemus/qemu
to test if update would break a system, and I'm testing with multiple distros.
So I have several yaml files with different configs, but when I check the containers I just have the last container I've run.
The container names aren't the same, and there aren't port clashing as well.
I'm using podman-compose, if this make a difference.
