Literally me. Worked at a startup for a micromanaging boss, company ran out of money and laid me off with no warning. Got into a multinational and received praise, bonuses and stellar reviews for 2 years, and suddenly got laid off again because it was acquired and the new owners wanted to reduce expenses.
At this point I don't give a fuck anymore about commiting long-term to a company. I'm just invoicing as many clients as possible and saving up money so I can live on it when the contracts end.
Also the best thing about contracts is they have an end date, so you are mentally prepared for it. If it gets renewed, you can even renegotiate your rate if you consider the client is too much work for you, so you also get some leverage on them.

Morality is one reason why the west beat the east. It encourages a high trust, productive, collaborative culture.
