If you are on a network segment were you have access to a host that is peering with these autonomous systems, nothing is stopping you.
A random person can't do it because random people don't have access to bgp hosts on network backbones.
This has been used by world powers to intentionally hijack portions of the internet in the past
https://www.kentik.com/analysis/bgp-hijack-of-twitter-by-russian-isp/
And more often it happens because of idiots
https://www.kentik.com/blog/a-brief-history-of-the-internets-biggest-bgp-incidents/
>>105908528 (OP)I was impacted by this early today, surprising to know a massive worldwide outage was caused just by sheer fecaloid incompetence
>>105908754why hasn't anyone done this before then
>>105908844the internet is basically just a series of wires connecting customers to ISPs, and ISPs to other ISPs
the ISPs all maintain routing tables which are basically just text files that determine where data is physically sent if it's routed to a specific IP address (this has to happen, otherwise the internet would be conceptually impossible)
ISPs communicate with each other using BGP (border gateway protocol) to update their routing tables all the time.
a random indian ISP hijacking 1.1.1.1 by broadcasting new routes for it is just something that can happen, they have the authority because they're part of that network I described above and other providers have decided to listen to bgp traffic from that particular system
how did we get here where one central company can basically turn all internet off? funny how that happened

>>105910534Ironic that you posted this on a thread about cloudflare's 1.1.1.1/1.0.0.1 being affected by a BGP issue, despite being nameservers that you enter directly with no involvement from DNS
>>105908550That'll cut off the source but many have already immigrated. Every jeetnigger and sandnigger needs to be hunted down and turned into fertilizer. Thhe only solution is total eradication.
>>105910558Solution: just ban the turd worlders. It doesn't matter what you do, either you design a no-trust system that doesn't listen to rogue peers or you have a cooperative internet where routes propagate across countries, you can't do both
On that point, I think the internet as a cooperative worldwide network is unsustainable. It's surprising that it even happened at all. It will split into several large networks at some point in the future.

>>105912595>calls other people retards>clearly has no clue how DNS works>thinks cloudflare is only DNS/g/ - Technology
>>105911294If you're talking about just assigning your WAN interface an IP address that wasn't allocated by your ISP, it simply won't function at all for internet access. The "internet" wouldn't be routing that IP address back to your equipment so reply traffic would be absent, and furthermore your ISP equipment will drop any internet-bound traffic from your device to begin with because it will fail a simple reverse path forwarding check and whatever other policies they have to block misconfigured customer traffic.
If we're talking about BGP where an AS advertises route prefixes it shouldn't, in theory if the ISP has properly configured their environment there are various BGP features and extensions that can help detect and prevent bad route advertisements from eBGP peers from being accepted into routing tables. In practice, most ISPs are as uncaring and/or incompetent as ever so many of these safeguards aren't in place for a lot of providers. This is why some random shitters in India can advertise Google IP space + other prefixes and some portion of the internet will start routing that traffic there. Unfortunately, BGP was designed in an era where you implicitly trusted the networks you peered with and the security features were mostly built on top of the protocol and many are still optional to implement.

I don't give a flying fuck about DNS. having cloudflare as a proxy for the most popular sites on the internet is 10000x worse than using CF DNSs, and 100x worse than having facebook, google, etc. track you through most websites. DNS can leak domain names you are connecting to (and good luck having your own DNS server without depending on other corporate DNS servers...), web tracking can help companies infere your browsing habits. >>105909839so... nuke india?
>>105909839i'm pretty sure network objects can't set their own routing value; a major ISP would have to do something like have an india office that itself has access to the rest of the ISP
sorta like DNS records, me changing my own DNS doesn't change the settings on your end or what the content at 420.69.666.128 is, just that I can access it by typing "fart.com" and you can access it by typing "clappedoutcloacas.biz"
as in, a router somewhere in russia can say "to get to 1.1.1.1. i will go through router.bell.co.uk, or india.biz if bell is down" and nothing india.biz does on its end will affect the russian router
i may be talking out of my ass tho i did like half a net+ but i'm pretty sure BGP and its definitions are managed "locally" and downstream objects can't do much to affect it more than saying "I can/can't see [resource]" and part of the point of modern networking hardware and software is that even if something downstream lies like that, it'll see it took three hours to get a response and not use that connection anymore
BGP is top tier example of why boomers should retire.
Its conception came back in time when "security" was a large nigger with several charges of domestic violence standing in front of a door.

>>105939841Ok nigga. Now where does your DNS server fetch its information from? I'll wait patiently for your answer
>>105940877Unbound is a recursive server (the way DNS was designed), so fetches the root domains from the root servers, and then get the next subdomain from the root domain servers, and then the next subdomain from whoever those people are, etc.
>>105940945Use case for not simply entering root servers directly into your DNS settings?
>>105940994The root servers only know about the TLD servers.
>>105940945>>105941000This outs you as a chud and lets glowniggers watch your traffic easier. When you use something like cloudflare or google dns, the root servers (which are controlled by glowniggers) don't receive your IP address with the request, since your request is mixed with everyone else who is using the same resolver. They have to query google or cloudflare or whatever with a warrant to spy on your web traffic. But by setting up your own recursive resolver you are just publishing it straight to the source, while also wearing a flashing neon sign that says you're an atypical internet user with above average technical skill.
>>105941025I should send my query for cock.li to Cloudflare(CIA) instead of the TLD registry for Liechtenstein?

>>105940945you can also set unbound to fetch from a provider, using encryption (such as QUIC), which you're basically not gonna get from root servers. main point of unbound is to function as a cache, use whichever method makes the most sense for the initial fetches, since it won't really matter much.

It also didn't invade Afghanistan, it was asked for help after a group of Marxist military officers couped the government. The entire movement was organic, and as far as I know the Soviets had no direct hand in it, besides having trained some of the coup participants in military schools, etc earlier.
This isn't a strange thing by the way, Japs were training in the UK and US before WWII as well.
Shit started to hit the fan when the Communist urbanite government that overthrew the Marxist goverment that couped originally (lol) tried to pass reforms the tribal leaders didn't like. The commies went full retard too and thought reenacting the Soviet's purges was a good idea.
