>How do I activate Windows?
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
Usage: paste into Powershell, run.

>and Office?
Same method, use Ohook
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

>4 years with Windows

My 1 year of Linux has now come to an end. I don't do it intentionally, it seems 1 year is precisely the time I need for the novelty to wear off and for my tolerance of the horrible UX to end.
While on the other hand 4 years is what it takes to make my Windows installation a complete fucking mess of programs I don't need

Windows 11 has more optimizations for e/p cores, resulting in slightly better performance and power efficiency, however results may vary, there's still no clear consensus but the idea is that 11 is better for newer CPUs while older CPUs don't see as much benefits

Anonymous No.105940735
>>105940542
Interesting question, I'd say yes but it comes to mind that 11 might still see and apply optimizations to the e cores, who knows if that would be good or bad, testing both would be ideal, but in the end I don't think it would be a huge difference anyways

Scoop lets you install, update and uninstall software extremely easily
Instead of having to figure out which fucking build of FFmpeg you're supposed to install, you just type in:
scoop install ffmpeg
and it will install and even add it to PATH automatically so you and other software (like yt-dlp) can use it from any folder

You can also get ffmpeg installed properly for your system via getting one of the pre-built Windows binaries for mpv and running the update script first time, which lets you also install/update the latest git versions of yt-dlp and ffmpeg. You'll need to add the mpv folder to the PATH manually though, which isn't hard.

Hello fellow windtards. Linux user here.
I have to admit, one thing Windows does great is a user interface that just works. Everything seems on the same aesthetic and it is good enough. Almost beats having the "power" to rice linux to hell and back.

Linux is great if you're a NEET with many hours a day to waste on making sure the system works exactly the way you want, and also fixing any issues that will appear. Or, because you are a dev and it's nice to get exp/practice with the system.

For regular use? Like playing vidya or having a system that just works and you can dump all your available time into doing things you enjoy, instead of just tinkering with a system? Windows.

I use Scoop for CLI software but Winget is still useful for quickly updating programs that usually need you to download installers to update them like HWinfo for example
Also, while the type of software you'll usually install with Scoop doesn't take up that much space, keep in mind that Scoop doesn't automatically delete old versions when you update, so once in a while you should run
scoop cleanup *

IIRC that only needs to be set if you use a multi-edition ISO that comes with Home/Pro if you want to install over an OEM install, like the one from MS's website. It doesn't matter if it's being installed fresh to clean drives.
Also there's fairly minute differences but with how easy Enterprise is to get these days you should just use that.

How do make win11 stop feeling laggy and bloated and slow? My quite beefy work computer has been forcibly updated, and feels like shit. Everything has noticeable latency and delay, even right click context menu on the desktop. I’ve seen simple stuff like notepad and paint and even calculator take multiple seconds to spin up. It feels like in the background the system is constantly spinning up and trying to update or something, I can hear the fan unexpectedly spinning up at inappropriate times, even when it’s being used under heavy load (e.g. CAD modeling)

Is there a list of settings and menus I can dive into and turn off to remove as much of the cruft and bloat as possible and speed things up?
Anonymous No.105957247 >>105964309
Sometimes Windows 11 starts with the start button on the taskbar being highlighted by a thick outline. Normally when you hover over the button, a faint translucent square appears behind it, and when you click it, the windows symbol while shrink slightly, and when you release, it will go back to normal size. Not sure what causes the outline on boot. When I sign out, and sign back in, it doesn't show up. This has only happened on a restart or a boot from shutdown. This happens only on the 2nd monitor (I have 2). Don't have any startup programs except the nvidia control panel and the windows security app. I do have WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) installed, but to do anything with it you need to log in through the terminal first or use wsl commands.

Maybe check Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
There's also the Windows Store apps that seem to have a mind of their own, you might need to prevent them from updating or doing stuff in the background. Click the three dots button on the right and go to Advanced Options (If available, not all apps have this option) and mess with those settings (like Background app permission) and see if it helps any.

Can also check your task manager (right click the taskbar > Task Manager) during a particularly bad lag spike and see what's taking up so much processing power). And maybe disable some startup programs you don't need while you're at it. (It's the button on the left side of the task manager, looks like a speedometer).

I've done a bunch of 'optimizations' like this but yeah it still feels laggy to use Windows 11, especially compared to linux or even Windows 10/7. Yet, somehow the gaming performance is realyl good lol, and much better than linux in a lot of cases. I don't understand why the desktop is so sluggish though, even on a fresh install, even after going through most settings and turning stuff off.

Also some windows apps like Edge want to be running in the background or startup on boot, which makes them faster to access when you open them, so there's that. Maybe let them run how they want if you know you're going to use them. But I don't know what else they're doing lol (probably collecting data)

I want to upgrade from a 4090 laptop to 5090 to run larger video diffusion models. I've been using 10 ltsc for the last couple years, I downgraded a lenovo legion 7i, but after installing drivers the gpu cannot be recognized properly. reinstalling 11 fixes the issue, I think likely lenovo laptop vga drivers are broken on 10. some desktop threads mention issues with PCie gen 4/5 on windows 10, but laptop bios has no configs for this

>I thought ltsc 2021 was last W10?
It is the last W10 LTSC release - officially.
What makes it "LTSC 2022" is that you force-add the 22H2 enablement package, which isn't offered by Windows Update for the EnterpriseS SKU (internal name for Enterprise LTSC)
>both 22H2 and 21H2, from which LTSC 2021 is based on, are derived from the same branch - codenamed Vibranium - which is why they share the same update KBs
>thus upgrades in between releases from Vibranium's 1904x build range are conducted by small-sized "enablement packages"
>checking the CBS .manifest files in the .cab, you'll notice what the package basically does is add a feature configuration override key that controls the 22H2-exclusive features
>(betawiki autists have documented how this feature-locking management works: https://betawiki.net/wiki/Feature_lockout_in_Windows#Windows_10_and_later)
>along with updating HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion (and the EditionVersion subkey) to accordingly change the build and version values, of course

Between software that actually works, not having to chase down nightly builds to fix some obvious showstopper bug that never should have made it through release candidacy, drivers that don't hang/crash/simply fail to function (assuming they even exist in the first place), not having to google some line noise command that has to be entered every few days so X Distro doesn't destroy itself, sound/graphics/wireless that actually works (and you can be pretty sure you have a hardware failure if it doesn't), UI and font rendering that actually works (your "no u" doesn't work here, sorry), etc. etc. etc., it's actually hard to put a dollar figure on how much using Windows has paid me.

Given what the update does is quite simple, I don't think it will fuck up something during the installation, and just after that. Some anon here reported success adding this package some generals ago, with the system properties showing 22H2.

Theoretically, since your W10 version will now be 22H2, you might be limited to 22H2-destined updates.
But as every W10 version from 2004 to 22H2 is Vibranium-based (the system files are still internally versioned 10.0.19041.xxx: 19041 being the initial release of Vibranium - version 2004), there shouldn't be any potential issues, at least until October this year when non-ESU support for mainstream Windows 10 22H2 systems ends.
>one scenario that comes to my mind is a possible splitting of Vibranium updates between LTSC 2021 and ESU-only 22H2, the latter of checks whether your system is licensed for ESU before installing the updates
>ESU, for obvious reasons, does not handle [IoT]EnterpriseS due to the edition's long-term-service nature - supported at most until 2032
>although MAS' TSForge did claim to support activating ESU for IoTEnterpriseS before release 3.1

It will depend on whether the CBS packages within any further LTSC 2021 and ESU-only 22H2 updates continue to be identical like how it currently is, from that date. If the status quo doesn't change (and Windows Update will still deliver LTSC-specific updates for unofficial [IoT]EnterpriseS 22H2 systems after that date, without sacrificing 22H2-specific code and features on that side), you're free to go.
Yet again, time will tell. You can always uninstall the enablement package like the paste says to revert back to 21H2.

I've jumped ship from W10 to W11 and recently, and aside from some questionable UI changes it's not that different from W10 honestly.
In some aspects it's way superior, like for me personally it's the proper borderless windowed mode for games that finally works like a proper fullscreen mode. I can run a game in 2K in borderless windowed with Nvidia DSR while having my desktop in native 1080p and the game will actually run in 2K with instant alt-tab and such. After Windows 10 this shit is like magic.

>borderless windows mode for games
You can do this in windows 11 without 3rd party software (besides native game settings)?
Anonymous No.105970479
>>105970411
Basically any modern game that has "fullscreen" option 99% of the time runs in borderless windowed mode. Some games specifically split the option into Fullscreen Exclusive and Fullscreen.
What I mean is that any game that runs in borderless or "fake" fullscreen actually runs as if it's proper fullscreen on Windows 11.
I think you can achieve this on Windows 10 too by using SpecialK, but I remember even the author of SpecialK said that people should upgrade to Windows 11 for gaming because Windows actually does proper borderless mode natively now.
Anonymous No.105970509
Also adding to my example with virtual resolution (running the game in 2K with native desktop res being 1080p), on Windows 10 I had to use fullscreen exclusive because 2K was either unavailable when borderless mode was selected or you could select it but the game would still run in 1080p.
Another thing that it helps with is GSYNC, it's just more consistent since on Nvidia "Fullscreen & Windowed" mode in GSYNC settings has some issues, so you can just leave it at Fullscreen only and it will work properly with borderless games since they're essentially treated as Fullscreen application.

I've been out of the game for a while, and have a W11 microwin ISO ready to go from a while back, is that a good path? are there better W11 "de-bloated" or whatever options nowadays or should I go to W10 LTSC?

Pick windows 11 LTSC. No bloat at all, if you don't like some of the UI you can install Startallback to make whatever part of the UI to go back to the win10 look. There's a 100day trial which you can reset by reinstalling windows, or just get the 5$ lifetime key.

Not that Anon, but IoT LTSC is not the same as a debloated GAC ISO
IoT LTSC is frozen on a version and never gets any feature updates, and it gets security updates for 10 years (which is why a lot of Anons are on the last W10 IoT LTSC: They get to have security updates on W10 until 2032)

Is it possible to "mix" different W11 or even W10 OS and UI features and preinstalled software from different versions that I happen to like?

For example, I want the Classic Task manager, notepad, paint, and wordpad included/the new ones disabled, but I want being able to have tabs within windows for the Windows Explorer folder viewer, and the ability to scroll through grouped windows of a certain application in the taskbar when it shifts to a drop down list with the mouse scroll wheel.

Is there a way to get that all in the same W11 LTSC install, even if I have to use third party tools and UI hacks (or can some even get that to work with W10 via some) even though some of those were added or went away with different updates, some past when LTSC is from?

It's not a dumb question - it's a complicated question, with multiple solutions, all of which have pros and cons. It's a laptop (which are famous for being very inflexible about their boot procedures), so it may not handle multiple EFI System partitions - so we can't guarantee a multi-ESP configuration (the hardest to break) will work for you - not to mention multiple ESPs means you want to "mirror" your BCD configuration between all the ESPs if you want dual boot to always work. It's why we're all shy to give you a hard list of steps to set this up - there are too many unknowns.

Mostly with web browser. I have LibreWolf and succeeded in registering it as the default web browser Windows-wide, but every time I click on a link from an external app e.g. Discord then it says there's already a LibreOffice running and it cannot open a new one (instead of just opening in the open one as a tab). Then again, I'm not sure how the WebExtensions rewrite fares compared to the original XUL extension. Haven't used the foxy ever since the XULocaust.

Otherwise find a desktop download manager worth a damn that has browser integration (with a helper extension.)

Try different USB ports. Otherwise change the method you chose to prepare the install medium - Rufus or Ventoy should be a good bet. Hope you aren't straight-up dd'ing the ISO (or using balenaEtcher).
You'd actually expect this kind of stuff to happen when installing an earlier version of Windows (e.g. 7), due to the lack of XHCI and NVMe drivers.

Okay, I have an old problem that spans several windows versions, Ive had this harddrive for a while.
Im on windows 10 and this harddrive has files on it in a specific folder. In this folder there are subfolders. And in these subfolders more subfolders and files.
Whenever I try to change anything about this folder, including adding new folders, moving or deleting, it tells me I dont have permissions. I am administrator and the only user on this PC. I tell it to "Continue" with the blue&yellow shield icon, but it says I "need permission from x". When i try to uncheck "read only" from the folder settings, it tells me "access denied" for every single subfolder.
Now, X is an elusive fellow. His actual name is a long string of numbers. But he owns the folder, every single subfolder and file in it. I assume he's an earlier version of my account from earlier windows installations when I hadnt linked up to my microsoft account yet.
I managed change the owner of the folder to "everyone" and delete the elusive Mr.X, then grant "everyone" all rights and permissions to the folder but I still cant modify any subfolders because they still belong to Mr. X. The result is that now says i "need permission from everyone." whenever I try to modify or move a superfolder.
What I can do is go to the lowest level of each file, change the owner to everyone, grant all permissions to everyone, then delete or move the file, then move one level up and do it again. That would be THOUSANDS of objects.
Trying to solve this with the "inheritance" setting in "advanced security settings" just creates more confusion. i dont even know what that is and if it should be enabled or disabled. In some cases, this created a new user called "CREATOR OWNER"
Now my question is: WTF is going on and how do i fix it?

Well over time, more games or programs I'd want to install (like an OCR) just weren't compatible. This became increasingly the case. At first I could find alternatives and workarounds, but those have also become rarer over time. Now recently, a game I play got an update and now doesn't want to work in W7. Then today, a different game I wanted to try wouldn't work on 7 either. So it's just gotten to the point where I have to update, or basically won't be able to use this computer for anything but browsing the internet.

what i do when reinstalling windows for people is i boot up a linux livecd, and go through their "C:" and just delete everything that isn't needed, windows, program files (except certain ones like steam which are reusable), etc. distilling it down to basically just user data which i move into a new folder (so the end result is like "C:\Backup" with everything you want to keep in it). deleting windows boot/recovery partitions so it can make new ones, and installing windows from there. NOT selecting to format the volume
it sounds like more work but it's usually much faster because you aren't copying everything off and copying it back at all, just moving your stuff "out of the way" temporarily on the same volume, which is basically instant.

There's no good reason to disable updates on LTSC as it only gets security updates
The entire point of LTSC is stability so it doesn't get feature updates that change or break the system. It's made to be used on stuff like medical devices and such

1337x is pretty much present day piratebay. Just use an FL Studio torrent that has lots of seeds and comments saying it works fine. Like this is where people get their working Photoshop CS6 installers from.

I've come home after trying linux. Packaging on linux is so bad. If you want to update just 1 app, you have to update the other 50 apps on your PC! If 1 out of those 50 version updates introduced a bug? You're stuck with it! Also, GIMP sucks.

Rare unless you use a distro with bleeding edge packages like Arch

I prefer Windows myself because it's still more "just works" than Linux, but you don't have to make shit up

I would advise against blindly downloading from unknown sources. Many seeds doesn't mean much and most people who comment are literal tards.
Rutracker has a section for audio software and that's a forum. I'd pick one guy who has hundreds or thousands of posts and pick his torrent instead.
But whatever.
If you need to ask, you are already stupid enough to not even notice when your computer gets infected.

Take ownership at the top level and force propagate it down. Close and reopen the properties window and then grant yourself full access and force propagate down. If it doesn't work you might have better luck with the command line, ask chatgpt for details

I used this (https://github.com/SiL3NC3/PortableRegistrator) to register floorp installed using scoop as my default browser. Whenever I click on a link on Discord or steam, it opens using floorp, so I think you may find it useful. it should work with any portable app, not just those installed through scoop.

Stupid question, will I get some sort of interference between GPU and iGPU if I don't uninstall the drivers? I'm on Windows 11 and even though the display port is connected to the GPU the system keeps giving me the option to use the iGPU.
Anonymous No.106012461
>>106011470
Why not just disable the iGPU entirely from the firmware settings, seeing as you don't have any display connected to the mobo ports (unless you want to specifically use it for some purpose?)
I guess with multiple GPUs Windows will allow you to choose which to use per-app (think laptop switchable graphics.)
