To anyone who has bolt modded a model M
Is it a better idea to keep the spring assemblies in the same key they came out of or it doesn't matter?
Is there also any things to lookout for?
Don't want to deal with one hundred tiny M2 bolts and nuts only to find a key doesn't work

I've having to bolt mod to replace a membrane, or what I think is a bad one but It's getting replaced anyway

Anonymous No.105953646
The thing I've never heard answered to my satisfaction: what kind of board is best for silent switches?

It sounds like a nonsense question. Why would the sonic properties of the board matter if the switches aren't making sound? It must just be personal preference, what you like the look of/etc. I think that's not true.

I've tried silent switches in an aluminum board and it felt wrong. I can't explain it. Injection ABS cheapo boards don't feel right either. I think maybe the answer is CNC polycarbonate or dense acrylic boards... TX EO87... Solidity, density, but soft and non-metallic... this "means" quiet, and the evident meaning of a keyboard is almost as important as what it does

Thin metal really likes to flex when it moves
The two contact points in a switch, made of metal, don't just touch each other then stop, there's micro movement that involves tapping, think of a ruler when you flex it and let go, it moves back and forth before settling to its original position this is "bouncing"
Keyboard firmware has code that basically says "when an input from this key is registered, ignore it for a few milliseconds" so those taps during bouncing aren't registered, hence, "denouncing"
Sometimes, the firmware's debouncing isn't long enough, or there's a problem with the switch, so chattering occurs. I've only encountered it with bad switches, but sometimes software does let you change the denouncing time

Really the only foolproof solution is hall-effect or optical switches. But I doubt these switches will ever replace metal mechanical ones.

Anonymous No.105959675

Putting some lube on the back of the contact leaf is enough to kill its ping. Also lubing the legs of a tactile switch makes a subtle (at best) difference in tactility in my experience.

How much money do you have to spend?
If you have unlimited funds you could have your keyboard as heavy as you like.
I could machine an enormous keyboard chassis that's so heavy that you would need a forklift or a crane to move it.

You can get the barebones off Amazon for fairly cheap, or you can go to Glorious' site and design it from scratch yourself. They send over a chasiss and you essentially just plop in switches and caps, but they include all the tools to disassemble it if you ever decide you want to mod any part of it.

Almost every part of it is customizeable to an extent an you can find tutorials on their site or just YT in general. They're compatible with pretty much any switch type as well, so take your pick as to what brand you want. Gateron? Akko? Cherry? Drop? Kalih? Doesn't matter, just pick whatever sounds best for you and just go for it.

I'm not even a shill, it's just fucking eye opening to have something this quality at the price. Total for 2 sets of switches, caps, and the baseplate off Amazon costed me about 220$ CAD

Linears are just a default for most manufacturers due to red linear being the standard for all other linears. Tactiles are good but browns which are the default standard are not widely liked and so cheap manufacturers avoid them and stick to red linears or blue clickies

any of you guys ever put a playstation style joystick onto a keybard? im trying to piece together a razer Tartarus style thing for a mate, and most of the information i can find on making custom key layouts almost always just says to use QMK on someone elses layout, then just not connect every key, the docs.qmk.fm lists analog joysticks as usable on adc pins, but i cant figure out how to actually make it turn that input into like, actual movement in game like WoW or GTA beyond just listing them as WASD.

They'll tell you with a straight goddamn face that it's more efficient to use multiple keystrokes for shit that's basic on other layouts like fucking arrow keys lmao. It's based on the original Macintosh M0110 keyboard, but that wasn't exactly the model of perfection or efficiency even in its day; Apple sold a companion numpad, and very soon after made a (for the time) fullsize board with dedicated arrow keys AND a numpad, because even Apple fucking knew that the base M0110 wasn't enough.

And then the people who buy actual HHKBs are the biggest rubes of the keyboarding world. I paid $140ish for my Realforce R3S and I still feel like I overpaid a bit (and I say that even though it's my current daily driver). I can't begin to imagine paying double that (or more!) for the same switch tech but for substantially fewer keys.

Most who post online will tell you with a straight face yes, but that is because:
>A) They spent a few 100 on a glorified 60% rubber dome
>B) Those who don't like it don't want to admit they spent a few 100 on a glorified 60% rubber dome

It's the ultimate pseudointellectual litmus test. If you see someone bragging about having one you just know they have a poorfag mindset as they want to maximise internet points or social standing by having the "le epic no-nonsense daily driver" with the whole "programmer approved" branding. Then if you point this out they will smugly talk about Topre switch lifespan like as if HHKB is the only Topre keyboard on the market with Topre switches and failing to realize that they could have got 100% Topre keyboard like a JDL or Realforce for equal to or less than the price they would have actually payed for the HHKB. All the while these guys will either deliberately leave out or simply not know that, while Topre switches have a long lifespan, Topre switches are highly susceptible to water damage and once a switch dies you need to replace the whole board. But they often don't know any of that because all they know is the brand recognition and marketing behind HHKB and how it is supposedly the patrician's keyboard of choice along with the appealing contrarianism of owning a keyboard that is not actually trully mechanical.

Plate is easy. PCB? Not so much. You are better of using keyboard layout editor and exporting the custom layout you made as a json file which you can then upload to keyboard CAD assistant to get a dxf file of the plate. Then you send out the dxf to an acrylic or metal laser cutting service and get a keyboard plate for less than 50. From there you plug in the MX switches into the plate and handwire a matrix across them all and them connect them to a microcontroller like a teensy flashed with QMK.

Pseudointellectual is a word which appeals exclusively to people for whom the idea of "the intellectual" inspires awe; discriminating who is or who is not a "true" intellectual is important for this sort of person; I don't need to read anything written by that sort of mind. The filter is for my benefit.

>what the appeal of these keyboards is?
for me its the speed of key registry. If you've been used to the old-style, membrane-type keyboards, you would understand how crispy mechanical (and even hall-effect sensor) keyboards are today. Also remember, not all of us just keep our PC at home. Myself for instance- I travel to different countries constantly and primarily use a powerful laptop for everything. So having a thin, compact, wireless, reliable 60% keyboard is something I cherish.
>>105952118
if you do gaming, writing or use a keyboard often- a tactile and swift keyboard is enjoyable. Especially for gaming, where the slightest key press would be preferred for fast-paced competitive games. Now, if all you do is basic web-surfing or simple emails- it isn't for you. For us who constantly chat, write, game, use macros for certain apps, travel- its almost a necessity.

fullsize/1800 is the only correct computing gigachad layout. any layout omitting arrowkeys, numpad, or f row are irrelevant . "just learn layers" is a well-designed coping mechanism used to rationalize being a key-let. a true patricians keyboard will have as many keys as possible, starting at a minimum of fullsize/1800 and going up from there.

a true computing gigachad is not afraid of learning new discrete hotkeys, he embraces them

he does not mind being excluded from most keycap sets due to lack of keys, he wears this as a badge of honor

he does not mind spending triple digits on switches and stabilizers for a single set, he invests into his passion

he is not put off from his board weighing more than his desk, he knows this overengineered hunk of alloys doubles as a self defense tool

he does not give a fuck about what silly design is on the bottom, as he is the only one powerful enough to lift it up and inspect it. but he has more important things to do

true computing gods know these truths to be self-evident

Row 3 control (since it would be R3 in a GMK set). Control where caps lock normally goes.

That's a Daring Run Flip 6p, they were pretty cheap for a full aluminum in-stock keyboard but needed some work to eliminate some bad case noises. I've really come to like it because it has the bounciest typing feel of any board I've owned, and it's a very useful layout.

It does have wireless as well. I wonder if they'll ever do another round of these.

good point, I meant more like base sets. many base sets exclude numpad and split it into child sets (usually with much lower stock). fair, since most people buying this crap are key-lets, but it does make buying older sets much more difficult.
