For some dumbfuck reason the morons in charge of setting the quality parameter in my phone's camera JPG encoder decided that 99.9999 was a good value so images end up taking several MBs of storage space. I have literally thousands of these images and it's a huge pain in the ass to send them over wifi and I don't want to ever use cables again now that I've grown crippling accustomed to wireless charging/file transfers.

When the original JPG quality is really high lossy to lossy is fine. Similar to how most people won't store a 20-40 Mbps blu-ray but a smaller 5-10 Mbps H264 rip.

On the web it's a huge gamble whether the JPG in question is of close-to-lossless quality without pixel peeping and whatnot.

Things like waifu2x can recover original images somewhat but it can also cause unwanted hallucinations so that's not going to be widely used anytime soon.

I tend not to convert the images I save into different formats. Images I create are always:

I personally don't like jpeg xl because of poor software decoding performance. The improved compression efficiency isn't worth the 10X slower decode speed. Webp will still be the go-to for a while for that reason alone for the next decade or so.

I have a script that converts webp images in the download folder to jpg if that's what you mean by "use".

I have converted every single webp piece of shit into s PNG or JPEG.
I won't ever use that forced retard format if I can help it.
It doesn't even open on my 2019 pirated photoshop and I can't open them in wangblows photo viewer anyways, I don't use whatever that modern bullshit photos program is because it feels cancerous.
There's zero incentive for me to use that garbage and I will keep on converting it into a real picture format.

I don't think it would be noticeable even for large images, for example a 4k JPG image takes like 60ms to be decoded on any modern CPU so 10x 60 is like 600ms, less than a second, you probably would a have bottleneck by sending the data to GPU anyway.

It's even better for animated cinemagraph pixel art since lossless webp is able to compress only the moving parts similar to a video codec. A lot of potential for ultra compact pixel art games maybe less than 100MB.
