The most rewarding moment of my career so far was when the payment system i was team-lead on was launched into production by the bank that contracted the company for the job. I learned a lot by having a peek behind the courtain that i did not have when i was a regular developer working on similar projects and i got a lot more confidence in my decisions once i got to be the final ok in the chain.

That’s because tech has no job security now more than ever. People want you gone because it’s the only way to give themselves more value. Don’t take it personally, use it as motivation to get better and make yourself more important. Things are cutthroat now so just embrace it and get on your manager’s good side. The only people confident they’ll still have a job in a year are people who aren’t paying attention.

You have to admit it is cool people can actually complain about that. We've got AI, we've got Trump as president arguing with a guy who wants to do interplanetary space travel. Electric vehicles (and very soon flying electric vehicles) are mainstream. We are really living in the future, it just sucks way more than we thought it would.

Man, I really wonder what's going on there.
A lot of senior devs say new people can't even code coming out of college, and recommend you do certs and projects while in college to get experience.
People elsewhere say that tech just isn't hiring, or they're hiring H1B for 80-90% of what an american college student is asking.
Are college students asking too much, or are colleges just not teaching enough, or what's going on?

The job market for tech has become too competitive in the US due to high wages, downsizing from covid, AI helping create more code, H1B and various other factors.

We’ve all lived the nightmare. A new developer shows up at work, and you try to be welcoming, but he can’t seem to get up to speed; the questions he asks reveal basic ignorance; and his work, when it finally emerges, is so kludgey that it ultimately must be rewritten from scratch by more competent people. And yet his interviewers—and/or the HR department, if your company has been infested by that bureaucratic parasite—swear that they only hire above-average/A-level/top-1% people.

It’s a big problem, especially now. There’s a boom on. I get harassing emails from recruiters every day. Everyone’s desperate to hire developers…but developers are not fungible. A great coder can easily be 50 times more productive than a mediocre one, while bad ones ultimately have negative productivity. Hiring one is a terrible mistake for any organization; for a startup, it can be a catastrophic company-killer. So how can it happen so often?

Like many of the hangovers that haunt modern software engineering, this is ultimately mostly Microsoft’s fault. Back when they were the evil empire where everyone secretly wanted to work, they were famous for their “brain-teaser” interview questions – Why are manhole covers round? – and, of course, they asked new university graduates about computer science theory; “Write me a binary search.”

Let me offer a humble proposal: don’t interview anyone who hasn’t accomplished anything. Ever. Certificates and degrees are not accomplishments; I mean real-world projects with real-world users. There is no excuse for software developers who don’t have a site, app, or service they can point to and say, “I did this, all by myself!” in a world where Google App Engine and Amazon Web Services have free service tiers, and it costs all of $25 to register as an Android developer and publish an app on the Android Market.

Often something like myString.transformToSomething() makes much more sense than transformToSomething.
Same goes for infix, so "a" joinWith "b" vs joinWith("a", "b")

Hello anons, I am a junior web dev but after 2 years in, I think I'd like to grow into the devops role. However, I can not find a reliable course/video that shows what you actually need to learn and where to learn it. All they say is you need to learn the tools but no specific order or anything it's kind of confusing. Anyone that could point me to something that helped them transition into devops ?

So it's like any other degree now. Kind of what I was expecting.
>>106012437
Man. What I've been told to expect from multiple people now is in addition to CS degree you need:
compTIA A+, Network+, Linux+, and Security+ by the time you're out of school and CISSP, CISA/CISM, GSEC, and OSCP for cyber security by the time you've been in the workforce for 4 years.
You should also be contributing to github and possibly be doing bounties - not necessarily paid ones but basically enough to show that you can do more than just have certs and a degree.
>>106012431
I've heard this a lot. People want portfolios. Which is kind of why I don't understand the emphasis on people with degrees over people with certs and github contributions.

val result = numbers
.asSequence()
.filter { it % 2 == 0 }
.map { it * 2 }
.sum()

Looks clean concise and readable right? And this is just a really basic example. Now try doing advanced transformation stuff without extension functions and nobody will fucking see through anything anymore.

I spent an hour today going in circles on something with Claude until I realized the pajeets (unnecessarily of course) copied a bunch of components, renamed them, used those instead, and never deleted the old no longer used ones. So even with AI, jeets still ruin everything.

>How do I get a job
Join the military in an IT field and go from there
That usually gives you access to free college for 4 years and things like the GI Bill.

IT in the military means you get a secret or top secret clearance, so that opens doors to businesses that do contract work with/for the military
Even if down the line you get a job that doesnt require a clearance so you end up losing it, there are still businesses run by nothing but white guys, usually former ex-military and they'll hire you and maybe even give you a free handie if you're also military and sound incredibly autistic about some niche thing they are looking into. Like, if you can just talk and talk and talk about specific shit and then bullshit as well in the interview it will make their cocks drip

Today at work I was in a big meeting, hundreds of people sitting at multiple tables, some leaders at the front going through powerpoint decks... it was all a big waste of time but there was free food so whatever. Anyway... I was sitting near the back, because I don't want to get noticed, and across the aisle from me was some woman in a short summer dress. And as she kept fidgeting in her seat, crossing/uncrossing her legs, shifting her weight... the bottom of her dress kept riding up and up her leg. By the end of the meeting, I could almost see the side of her butt. I'm pretty sure from the angle that I was the only one who could see, so I'm like... wtf, is she doing this on purpose to tease me, or is she just a complete fucking ditz? I have no idea who she was. I don't know the game, but it was my turn to get off the bench and I hit a ball and I thought "ok now what" and I heard people shout "run" and next thing you know im doing something right.
It helps having good benchwarmers. "What are you going to do" and ngl the military was just an answer to a question i didnt know the answer to. Thats like saying, "I'm stepping up to the plate". Well, of course you are, you are up next.

I was never an IT guy growing up, and not knowing what i wanted and joining i think it helped me discover what I wanted and might be good at.

if you know what you want it will help, and if you dont know what you want it still helps.

Well I'm not working nor in any mood to do so so obviously not. I woke up feeling fine. No more grinding pains in my stomach. I woke up at a reasonable time not being unable to sleep because I was woken up at various times in the middle of the night because of pain. I ate actual meals. A return to the routine. I sent my wife back home to be with her family for the weekend. No distractions. Able to work in peace. That was the plan until that phone call went and fucked it all up. It further served to disrupt the intended return to the routine because I was getting ready to eat then my resulting rage delayed it. So it's just another disruption to add to a long list to all the ones that resulted from natural causes.

so close but yet so far. Indeed, devs are not fungible. A guy who can be a 10x in a team suited to his skills and way of working can be a -1x in a different team or even a -10x out of spite because he received a laughable 3% raise and now hates your guts. This Matrix level human battery theory of work does not apply to knowledge workers.

people like to work with their own kin. Who looks, speaks and thinks the way they do. If you want to hire competent people make your top guy have a 20 min chat with the applicant without all this code-waterboarding-as-an-excuse-to-confirm-initial-bias nonsense. As long as he is incentivized* to identify the right people your hit rate will be much better

*t. someone charged with hiring people but exclusively trying to make the jeetest of them pass because screw these guys

Yes
operator fun Point.inc() = Point(x + 1, y + 1)
var p = Point(4, 2)
println(++p)
>Point(x=5, y=3)

Kotlin is pretty kino because the very strong set of overloading, genetics, extension and infix functions allows your code to be abstracted on such an insanely high way it can look like plain English. In fact, some library DSLs basically do look like English

>what's the biggest irk you have with the lang?
It kinda depends on the context you use it in. As a standalone language there's not really much to complain about, but kotlin is also used in environments like Android where legacy javashit can fuck up your day. The migration to kotlin 2.x or more specifically kotlin 2.2.0 was a total mess because all the libraries you use on android like hilt or moshi couldn't keep up with the kotlin/ksp changes.
For backend purposes it's much comfier, and it only gets even more comfy if you use kotlin-only stuff so no springbootslop or something like that.
If I had to pick a biggest irk in that area, then it's the fact that jetbrains isn't really a gigacorpo, so they can't always keep up with the shitton of projects they start. Kotlin itself is really well maintained, but the more specific you get, the worse the maintenance gets basically. Some obscure shit like markdown parsers for example gets rarely updated

What the UK banning 4chan taught me about B2B sales

This morning, while sipping my ethically sourced oat milk flat white , I read that 4chan got banned in the UK.

At first, I thought: “Wow, there goes half my pipeline.”
But then it hit me—this is EXACTLY like B2B sales.

When a platform disappears, do you complain? Do you cry?
No.
You pivot.
You adapt.
You find a new pond to throw your questionable memes—uh, I mean value propositions—into.

Just like when your favorite lead source gets blocked by IT security.
Or when that one decision-maker ghosts you after “circling back.”
Or when your target account suddenly evaporates because… Brexit.

Lesson learned:
If 4chan can get banned overnight and still thrive in the dark corners of the internet, your B2B strategy can survive losing one channel too.

Resilience isn’t optional. It’s your sales quota with a hoodie on.

Stay adaptable, my friends.

H1b should be addressed and downsized but I think the lower hanging fruit are offshore workers. They're a total net 0 for the American economy since they suck jobs and income out of it and are more dangerous for the average worker since they'll do it for 1/4 the pay (h1bs are usually only paid slightly less).

The way I see it going they're going to figure out a way to quota/tax/cap offshore remoties and only slightly downsize the existing h1bs. When the government sees Microsoft up and moving entire HQs to India they get leery.

Only people who live in bubbles say things like this. Work at any major tech company, it's literally just infinity offshore Indians. The reason you don't know is because they are in India and you only get to see the tip of the iceberg (managers/product side). It's a MASSIVE problem and it's infesting ALL industries not just tech. I have friends in accounting who have been ramping up offshore jeets, my brother is in EE and his company is ramping up offshore jeets. Offshore jeets are turning into the corporate cheat code and this is why there is 0 entry level corporate work left for graduates right now. It's all jeets all the time all offshore.

All companies like this work on getting people jobs at clients, often by falsifying and prettying up the resume, in exchange for skimming a huge chunk of the employee's intended salary. Most of them shove in some non compete clause shit saying you're not allowed to jump ship to the client, and most clients want to keep you as an external contractortard because that keeps it trivial to remove you if they don't want you there.

Thats just how it is for any industry straight out of college
>hire someone who just did homework and showed up to pass

I'm currently a sr. mdm engineer, I'm basically a cross between a sysadmin and a sysengineer, I work in intune, jamf, azure, ad, etc.
I'm about 6 years deep into IT, and I'm making pretty good money, fully wfh, but at my company, which I like a lot, I can either go into management, or pivot into another team or role.
I'm thinking possibly about moving over into Sec, as my team specifically reports to sec, I have a good rapport with their manager and director (I do a lot of sec related work in the environments I listed above), and my company will sponsor certs if I ask.

Is Sec a fucked career at this point, or what? I'm pondering offsec, but I've heard such nightmarish shit about security as of late in terms of career difficulties. I really don't want to go to management, but I'm not sure what to pivot to.

The devops director loves me, but that team is such a fucking disaster full of objective shitters.

The biggest problem with security is getting your foot in the door. If you've got a team you can build rapport with and possibly move over to, thats 90% of the battle done. Plus it looks like you touch a lot of identity related stuff most likely, so sec should be an easy move.
Since you're touching a lot of cloudshit, have you also considered cloudops? Either sec or cloudops are where you want to move to with your current experience if you're trying to avoid management.

Although I will say, I moved into management myself 2 years ago, and its been hilariously easy money. I'm getting paid more than the sr/principal engineers, and I do less than half the amount of work, and the work I do is mostly non technical now.

For what it's worth, I don't like trump and think most of his supporters are ruraloid orcs, but H1b is supposed to provide workers in industries where there is a gap in willing and capable Americans. Contrary to what you'll hear Ratesh saying on Blind, he's not being compensated as well as his American coworkers, he works twice as hard, and if he gets laid off, he's in for a hell of a lot more than just unemployment checks. The H1b system should be scaled back substantially because the only people benefiting are billionaires and Asian immigrants who are more than capable of succeeding where they are now.

Is Boolean becoming a lost art?

I have recently been involved with an interview panel at my company where we are looking to hire sourcers to the team. It’s been very eye opening with nearly all the candidates I have spoken to how sloppy their Boolean skills are. These are individuals who have been in the recruiting industry for several years and mostly all in sourcing roles. I will ask them to create a basic search string as if they were searching for a software engineering candidate who knows C/C++ on LinkedIn and the results have been pretty poor. Has anyone else experienced this?

As an example, I have seen a recent search string that looked like this:

(“Software” engineer) AND firmware AND C or C++

After a few months of researching how boolean strings can be used in a talent sourcing context, we've put together a quick guide for you to get started and are happy to share what we've learned so far.

Let's face it, nobody wants to scour the Internet for hours looking for suitable job profiles, but we end up doing it anyway because using techniques like boolean strings are daunting.

But most of us barely scratch the surface when it comes to the Google search engine. Enter a keyword or a key phrase and hit search. But here’s the thing – Google search holds such power to offer highly customized results should you want it. And that’s exactly where Boolean search strings come into the picture.

Take the most simple search query. Type out a keyword and hit enter. Now add a few additional operators and symbols to the mix and bingo: you've written your very first Boolean search string.

It is simple enough. All you need to do is write the syntax correctly, for your search query to work.

Thoughts? Agree?

Obviously but you're talking about recruiters not /g/tards. Also I bet jewgle removes those advanced features soon. Didn't it come out they were intentionally fucking up the search results to keep you on the site longer?
