I hate being a recruiter realizing this new generation of candidates suck

I'm a recruiter for a small-town staffing agency in a rural part of the Pacific Northwest, where the population is about 40,000. Lately, I've been encountering some of the most challenging candidates I've ever worked with, and it leaves me feeling hopeless about the upcoming generation.

I’m a millennial, a generation often criticized for being “privileged and lazy,” but the 18- to 30-year-olds I see now are on a different level. Many move here because our minimum wage is high—nearly double that of Texas—but they arrive with no job lined up and often move in with parents who relocated from California. They frequently have no skills, leave jobs after three months, and bomb interviews so badly it feels intentional. I’ve had to stop interviews to ask, “Do you even want this job? Because you’re not coming across like you do.”

When I try to give people the benefit of the doubt—like explaining away employment gaps as time spent caring for a loved one—it usually turns out they’ve been homeless, on drugs, or in prison. They get angry at me when my clients won’t hire candidates with criminal records, despite it being entirely within the employer’s rights. I’ve heard countless arguments like, “I’ve changed my ways,” from people who are on their third prison stint for the same crime, just got out of jail, or can’t even legally drive because of multiple DUIs. And somehow, I’m the one they’re frustrated with when they can’t be considered for driving jobs.

What’s worse is the lack of preparation. Resumes are barebones—sometimes listing only high school graduation from 10 years ago and two months at Taco Bell. Then they wonder why no one is interested. Many seem to expect a job to fall into their lap and think they should start at $16/hour with no relevant experience.

If this is where we’re headed, I worry for the future of our workforce and society.

I'm not exactly a tech worker, at least not the type you guys mean, but I work for an electronics company.
I have been part of the quality department for a couple of years. The quality department is entirely populated by incompetent retards and I've been able to move up pretty quickly without a degree. I don't make great money but again, no degree. Currently 2 other departments are trying to poach me, the production and engineering department.
Production job would be a supervisor position with like 20 direct reports. The engineering department would be potentially at the bottom rung ,but I may be able to negotiate myself an okay deal as the dude seems to like me okay. The quality job would remain the same but I've created my own role sort of . I have decent growth path and influence but it's all pretty unofficially.

Go for either you can't go wrong. Engineering is comfy. Production might get you closer to business which is how you make real money if you can move up, but does that even happen? I'd bet engineering is the best option (less pressure, more intellectually stimulating).

Thanks bros. I want both prestige and legit growth. The engineering team has more inherent prestige, at least it does at my company. It has the greatest opportunity for skill growth but production likely has more opportunity for professional growth. Quality has the most potential for growth but virtue of having such a small talent pool, I've already made pretty high connections and pushed through projects I never would have been on had I been on another team.

holy FUCK was writing tests miserable. i spent an entire day on a single integration test because a deeply nested dependency i was mocking was always getting ignored and the real instance triggered no matter what i do. nest even has stuff for this specifically like overrideModule() but it would not fucking do it. i've had good success with DI but that was always in specific contexts with a smaller scope. using it as the foundation for an entire framework at least in nests case makes it a bit miserable. but maybe its just a skill issue idk

Yes. I have used dockers on my windows machine for development purposes. You said updating but I never had a problem with it working there. I still see no reason to use Linux.

I also just use winblows. I tried installing mint one time and there were a comical number of problems on a clean install. Random green lines across my screen for no reason, randomly putting my pc to sleep in the middle of me doing something etc etc.

sadly the reason windows runs the way it does it because (the lack of trying to clean it up since they can resell you software then) also the wide range of support creates bloat which can be slow but necessary if your human and want to use the machine you bought. major companies have been donating more to linux as it has a permanent market share. so support will only increase even then installing an os is a complicated task. i've installed incorrect windows versions and had the same number of problems for the same reason. software support. hit and miss sometimes. i've had hardware that dislikes new code. i've had hardware that dislike old code. machine that reboot 3 times before successful launches. os can be like fuel for your car. if you have the proper setup youll be flying around or you can stall your engine.
