I'd like it more if it was Qt, and xfwm4's grabable borders depend on theme, which it seems most themes make like 1px wide for some fuckin reason
Other than that it's okay, most featureful lightweight DE

It was until they binded ctrl+f to the new built-in search function instead of the original "quick find" feature, with no way to change it back. It's so annoying that I use ctrl+s (select by pattern) instead, which has its own problems.

>They effectively got bullied into GTK3
Then install Xfce 4.12. I did that in Debian 12. Just pay attention to what your package manager tells you, or better yet, download the source and compile it yourself:

http://archive.xfce.org/xfce/4.12/src or http://archive.xfce.org/xfce/4.12/fat_tarballs

There's some GTK3 in stuff like Thunar and Parole, so you can use the 4.10 versions (again, linking their source):

https://archive.xfce.org/xfce/4.10/src or https://archive.xfce.org/xfce/4.12/fat_tarballs

After that, you should get exactly what you were asking for. If you didn't compile, do an Apt pin on all Xfce-related packages to prevent accidental globohomo.

It's really not difficult.

Unless Cinnamon and Xfce fork Gtk from Gtk3 or some such thing, Qt is the only real path forward for desktops
And no, dividing Gtk into separate libraries like libadwaita isn't a good thing, it's another step of gnomeification

ah yeah I see what you mean. that doesn't happen on all programs for me, for example in my case Thunar behaves correctly (both the program and its dialog windows open on my primary monitor) but some programs insist on opening dialogs on my secondary one instead

XFCE4 was already better than GNOME2 before it shat the bed and became Gnome. The only worthwile things to come out of the project are the forks of the Search Tool, Calculator and PDF viewer apps which keep them functioning like their GNOME2 versions.

For me, sane defaults which means less fucking around out of the box (doing something as simple as keeping date next to time on XFCE is irritating) and system functions like media controls are better integrated without needing extra packages, better font rendering, resource usage (XFCE has become pretty bloated in recent years), workspace management and tiling, more shit is just packed together, needs less hack-y workarounds to get the setup I want compared to XFCE. I just like it, it's comfortable.
I also dislike rats.

All you have to do is put a Clock applet next to the other. How is this difficult or irritating at all???
>media controls are better integrated without needing extra packages
What extra packages? It all works out of the box for me.
>better font rendering
How so?
>resource usage (XFCE has become pretty bloated in recent years)
Because of GTK3+ but it's still better than current KDE and Gnome.
>workspace management and tiling
How is XFCE worse than MATE at this?

You don't have to be one of those to appreciate a DE that is easy to use. Many of them are made with that objective in mind. Like all those Gnome forks, such as Cinnamon.
>why don't they just use XFCE, then?
I guess that, after what happened with Gnome, devs would rather start their own projects than use and contribute to something that could radically change one day without them having a say in the matter.

> featureful lightweight DE
this shit weights just as much as gnome. The only lightweight it has is missing all the animation and the beauty of gnome, what makes this lightweight, aren't there more lightweight des out there?

LxQt and LXDE are the most lightweight DEs (not WMs), but they lack the features of Xfce. Likewise, GNOME is bloated but has no features.

is gtk really fucked like the others say? GNOME has been holding it hostage nowdays, what will be the implications? staying on gtk3 or 2 forever?

Hopefully an universal fork by the non-GNOME Gtk desktops, Gtk3 is actually one of the worse Gtk versions from what the migration from Lxde (Gtk2) to LxQt (Qt) has shown and it's only been receiving bug fixes. Some projects maintain their own Gtk2 fork but you'd be missing out on some welcome features. Perhaps a Gtk4 fork would be feasible but it's already very much GNOME, and a lot of functionality has been thrown out the window that's instead present in GNOME's libadwaita which is by design exclusive to GNOME.
Unfortunately Cinnamon would rather half-ass it now instead of future-proofing, and every DE that's not Plasma or GNOME is stuck trying to get Wayland sessions to work.

I'm a long-time Xfce and MATE user but I've acclimated myself to LxQt due to how grim things look. Even Plasma looks a little sketchy despite a lot of the recent Windows refugees moving to it

my desktop setup doesnt use gtk at all. i dont even use icons. but it's applications like gimp and firefox that force me to install these things. so until that changes i dont see the point in trying to avoid gtk desktop environments, even though i don't personally use them.
