You can run shred with any number of passes beforehand if you're particularly paranoid about anyone potentially recovering your dolphin porn.

I don't remember whether writing random data or zeroes is preferred. I assume it's the former.

use a program to write random data to it a few times. It should help. But wear leveling means you probably won't write to sectors that hold old/bad sectors that still have data that the ssd decided aren't good anymore.
then use the secure-erase feature on your BIOS (hoping it actually does anything :^)). then take it apart. drill some holes through each of the NAND's. leave it in a bucket of salt water for a week. Break it some more, toss it. burn it. something like that.

OP posted an SSHD. I assume that's an SSD so there aren't any discs.
If it's an HDD, yea, take it apart and grab those discs.

I didn't realize SSHD has discs and SSD components. This is news to me. I've only ever used SSD's or HDD's.
use your toolkit and grab those discs. drill holes leave in salt water. drill more holes.

Most HDD platters aren't glass (only seagates above 10tb seem to be) but bending them is enough apparently.
Also SEM gear is overpriced garbage.

Mix a small amount of red iron oxide and aluminum powder (8:3 ratio by weight), put it into a bag/balloon with a sparkler inserted into the thermite and attach an electric match to the sparkler. Keep your HDD in a ceramic pot and put the thermite on top of the HDD. You can now electronically/remotely melt you HDD.

Open it up, take out the platters, lay them on rocks, and hit them with MAP gas (actually MAP gas is something else these days, but it's MAP gas - a blue flame torch, you buy the yellow can of gas & the torch assembly (it has an igniter) as a set, and can get more gas in the form of another canister)

You can also hit the chips with the torch.

obvs have good ventilation etc.

maybe you'll get cancer, but the fbi isn't recovering that data. Maybe the nsa can idk.

Use the shred cmd on it a minimal of 7 times over to set the disk to jabber, then take it apart, smash the disk, and melt it in a furnace, then get out a drill and go back for the chips on the PCB to make sure it has no usable chips, and for good measure I keep a microwave I like to run em through for the pcb. After that make sure you dispose of itnin different locations each at least 90 miles apart from the rest site. As for the old case you can use it as a cute diy wallet depending on the disk drive. Hope it helps anon, now my tranny ass has to get back to the books.

This makes sense, but I still think that map gas burning the plates is smart.

Personally, I break them in half after using the gas (and letting them cool a lot).

gnu shred or similar. a few passes with that: data gone. destructive route: electromagnets placed on the platters.

most ive encountered are made of some metal alloy. you can still recover some data off of smashed platters anyway. ideally you need to run a magnet over them and the data is gone.

doesn't matter what's on it if the drive is encrypted. you'd be recovering chunks of encrypted data you'll never be able to crack. but you should always properly wipe drives before disposing of them.

Yes, just wipe it, throw linux on it, fill it up with data, then delete it.
Give it to some poor kids and have them store shit on it for you.
Or use it for backup… get external case for it.
Or one of those plug-in top loaders.

platters don't break up in a way you can glue them back together, they are brittle and explode to a million pieces if you try to do as much as bend them. You cannot possible stitch them back together if that happens, like CDs (yeah, I have a broken CD that still plays).
t. tried bending a hdd plate once

>>106111689
>>106111698
SSHD is a HDD with an SSD cache portion. The data is stored on the HDD, the ssd part is used as cache. So just break the platters and you are done.

Then use a sledgehammer, or whatever, to bend the disk physically. (you shouldn't need to open up the encasing to do that)

That's what they do with classified HDD.
