A year ago, I took my harddrive, whacked it with a sledgehammer a dozen times and doused it in alcohol for a couple hours, then tossed it in a ditch in the woods. The platter is still intact. What are the chances for that data to be professionally recoverable?

first I asked Gemini how many US citizens with little or no criminal records were on watch lists inside the US. After some prying, it came up with the estimate of about 12,000 but they were being monitored for anti terrorist reasons. Then I asked Gemini if AI would make it easier or more cost effective for the government to monitor more citizens? This angered the AI and the session was ended 4 times. anyway Op, the harddrive you destroyed is just a copy of all your stuff stored in the NSA's cloud. depending upon your crimes, those records may or may not be used to arrest and/or Epstein you sorry

These drives are virtually indestructible. There are 2 DEFCON talks about this by Zoz.

No they are not
The data is effectively unrecoverable by any normal means, the cost to recover the data left on shards of broken glass is astronomically high as it requires a lab of special equipment and like a dozen people to figure it out. Unless that drive is suspected to be related to a huge crime they wouldn’t bother because of the sheer expense.

how do you know the platters are intact? you would've had to open the drive or shake it around to check, and if you knew to look for that you would've known you should've broken the platters

Just piss and shid all over the connectors. Since glowies are unionized it will be in their contract that someone specialized in biowaste has to sterilize it before they can work on it. The drive will be destroyed during the cleaning process. But chances are they'll have to be put on a waiting list to get a biowaste specialist in the first place, during which time your piss and shid will be seeping through the cracks and destroying the internals.

>tossed it in a ditch in the woods
That's dumb.
I reckon over 50% of people who find a hard drive in the woods are gonna go plug it in just out of curiosity. A decent percentage would just take it straight to the cops or park rangers if it is a national park.
If you want to get rid of a piece of hardware just submerge it in a tub of yoghurt, put that tub in a large garbage bag of non-food waste and then throw that bag in the trash or drop it off at the tip.
Unless you are actively under surveillance I guarantee that no one will ever find that hard drive. And if you are under surveillance then tossing it into the woods isn't gonna be any better either.

unless you are a very weak race like Indians, whacking a harddrive even with the casing on will break the glass disks inside.

>1. Unscrew the circuit board.
>2. On the hidden side of the board, solder some cables to reroute the power circuits to the data circuits.
>3. Screw the circuit board back into place.
Keep at least one of these drives in your system, physically connected so it looks legit, but you've also disconnected the power to its cable from inside the PSU so it doesn't fry your own system.

Data is unrecoverable the moment the platter makes contact with air that wasn't filtered.

Proven false by whom? If it's so easy, why do you need a purpose built fumehood that doesn't cost millions yet still is too expensive for average guy when you want to try and save the disk?
