Also, hyper encrypted CDs are a secure physical storage medium of which I can exert direct custody and control and chain of possession. They cannot be scanned or penetrated. I am a political dissident, you can figure out the rest.

Bdrw units are nice. You can still get a top of the line LG unit for like 80 dollars but most manufacturers have stopped production because blueray never took off. It came about just as digital was getting big and accessible. Their functionality is great though. Bdrw drives can read and write ALL optical media. Dvd,cd,bd and mini discs. Leaving you with access to all legacy media.
I have a nice one and mostly just use dvds as theyre considered legacy media so dvd drives will be accessible for a long time movign foreward.
If you really want your shit to last use archive grade or m-disc dvds. They do cost more than your run of the mill spool of verbatim dvd-rws though.
Download 7zip archive shit. And for whatever reason i always burn the 7zip exe to the disc as well just in case i dont have it on whatever machine i need to get the data off the disc on.

Heres the real question for modern builds in dated tower design users.
You you prefer panels on or pull panels off when the thing remains parked for extebded periods of time?
I have a blower card so i prefer panel off. Its not an asthetic choice. More of a function, though it works fine if panels are on. It just runs warmer.

No, you need a BluRay drive for that. The thing about the BW-16D1HT is that you can flash custom firmware on it that'll let you rip BDXL 4K disks as well as archive CD's as those require a specific reading technique that the BW-16D1HT supports after flashing it with the RibShark firmware.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

BDs aren't really appropriate for backup of a lot of data. Writing them is quite slow and they don't store that much data per disc (not even the 100GB ones which are extremely pricey). They're alright if you have a relatively small amount of stuff you really want to keep.

NTA but it's not bait. CDs/DVDs/BRs are a solid storage option. They will last decades as long as humidity isn't too high. And if you are following 3-2-1 rule (3 copies, 2 media types, 1 offsite), then having optical media as one of these is valid.

Protip: Non-rewritables (-R not -RW) are better because there's no phase-change layer which makes data more stable.

Most people don't understand the relationship between SSD storage temperature and its data retention period while powered off. Given that optical media from 10-20 years ago still works it's understandable that they'll assume that if you want long term storage you have to go back to optical. However there is one good thing about optical: due to the sheer small storage quantity of each disc it forces users to spread out their backups over multiple storage mediums. Which means instead of losing 100% of their backup data to a RAID 0 failure/ransomware/dead controller, they'll only lose it to 5-10% instead.

Basically to retain data longer, active SSDs ironically benefit from high temperatures (but below 80C), which is why most SSD manufacturers do not recommend you use any kind of cooling on your SSD. Oppositely cooler temperature like say those found inside a refrigerator are excellent for storing SSDs while powered off, roughly spanning into multiple decades likely. Obviously we'll never really be 100% certain of this until we build a time machine though.

You mean SSDs in a case? No, they are bad for long term storage and need to power on every so often to keep working, which is extra work.

Actual HDDs cannot be usb powered like SSDs and need an additional power source. If you mean to use HDDs with some kind of externally powered portable dock, see negatives above.

2.5 hdds have lower capacity, higher cost per TB and are worse for long term storage than 3.5s. I didn't think to give them consideration but I guess you're right. Be aware that the drive you are using is SMR which has higher corruption risk.

Regardless, HDDs suffer from lubricant drying and magnetic decay, and can have controller failure, head crash, and NAND wear. None of this happens to optical media.

you can check this, btw: go to https://diskprices.com/ and check prices. then go to amazon and check prices for bundles of bluray discs. BDs are more expensive, esp. well-known-branded ones.

>Unlike spinning rust they don't have moving parts or break if you drop them.
I mean, they could break if you treat them badly, but HDDs have safety mechanisms. in fact, 2.5 HDDs (usually used in laptops) have even more mechanisms than 3.5 HDDs.

>You mean SSDs in a case?
>Actual HDDs
have you ever used a portable HDD? looks like you haven't. they are HDDs, just like the bigger ones.

>2.5 hdds have lower capacity
this is mostly irrelevant. we are talking about storage here, so 2.5 or 3.5 doesn't really matter much.
hell, I'd say it's better to have smaller HDD than bigger ones if you care about storage.

>higher cost per TB
it's a bit higher, but still lower than bluray discs.

Your main complaint seems to be that BRs cost more per TB than HDDs. This is correct and I never said this wasn't true.

However BRs are still better for long term storage.

For reference, BD-Rs cost $15-$25 per TB when buying 50-100 disc spinals. HDDs (8TB-20TB) cost $10-$20 per terrabyte.

BD-Rs hardly break the bank in comparison and for the extra 25% in cost you get unmatched long term storage.

They are WEB-DLs. It's a healthy middle ground between YTS slop and transparent HDB encodes. Good enough for most people, since they are ripped from streaming it's what most people will get anyway.

I watch blu rays and dvds using the power of my videocard which is so much more powerful than the hardware in any bluray player it is better than any purchaseable device.
Of course it was hard due to copyright fags intentionaly breaking bluray playback on pc.

The videocard and 5.1 or 7.1 32+ bit 192k+ sound of a mid quality pc would require spending a lot of money in audio video equipment to compare.
My woman likes buying dvd and bluray movies and I like playing them on my most capable hardware, not spending what the pc cost a 2nd time on a home entertainment system. And you simply can not buy a player that equals a decent graphics card, or it would cost more than one. With the right rendering software a gpu beats all other tv playback options of the home consumer.

Unless it needs to be deinterlaced there's not really much the GPU is going to do versus anything else with hardware accelerated decoding. Unless you're using some meme upscaling shit.
