California Man Sues Microsoft
>https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/a-guy-in-california-is-suing-microsoft-for-discontinuing-windows-10-demanding-free-extended-support/

>"Klein's complaint, filed in San Diego, states, "Microsoft’s stratagem was to use its dominant position in the OS market to achieve a dominant position in the market for generative AI. It did this by forcing customers to purchase new devices (or face financial repercussions if they did not) and running Windows 11, thereby ensuring a large user base that would access this product by default."

will this gain any traction or is it too little too late?

Having used Windows since 98SE, the reaction over 11 is unwarranted considering how much worse was 10 when it got released. No one seems to remember anymore that Microsoft tried to forcefully push it into every single fucking PC out there without arbitrary requirements getting in the way. And it definitely was much less usable 3 whole years after release than W11 is. People were made much more aware of M$ spying thanks to 10. It introduced mandatory updates, for 2 years by default it would install them without consent at random, you had cortana, you had absolutely sluggish W10 VMs compared to 8.1's, the entire system would change every year or half a year and break shit, I legitimately do not understand the amount of shit W11 gets when it's essentially the same thing with a little bit of shit sprinkled all over the corners to match the rest. Not coupled with the praise 10 gets now, that's for sure.

And those people made their choice a long time ago by relying on a corporation that's been screwing their customers for probably longer than you've been alive. Specially at around the time 10 was around. The difference between now and then is that now you have an arbitrary lock, whereas then they would just increase requirements and you would regret updating because now your hard drive and CPU are constantly getting raped and RAM consumption is higher for the same tasks. The one time Microsoft decided to optimize their shit was funnily enough with Windows 8, considering they were trying to push tablets with anemic hardware that could just barely make it function. But even beloved XP would run like dog fucking shit on a "perfectly working Pentium III 500" when it was released.

>they can not simply switch.
No, not *simply*.

You create a task-force that basically builds a modern system that initially runs in parallel to the old system (without the user having to adapt just yet), basically mirroring it's actions when viewed from the outside, and once this works, you have the new back-end working, and then you switch the front-end.

This takes time, consideration and planning, but if *you* don't decide to start to think about these things, it's always *Microsoft* forcing you to adapt.

Windows is already unstable as it is, they even tried the biyearly update nonsense with 10 and all it did was cause grief and misery.
From their standpoint updates are a service. They'll even tell you that Windows by itself is a service, not a product. You'll pay more than once for something that you request extra support on than what it has been planned.

Who is harmed by switching to or adding W11 since piracy is free?

Stick W11 in a VM if it's for work software and run any OS as a host including W10.

I don't "switch" Windows or other OS versions, I just add them anywhere I feel like. VM are nice because if you have issues you can revert to a clean snapshot or one loaded with soft you know works.

Of course the ESU updates will leak along with checksums so ya can pirate those, too.

getting into linux is actually harder if you're a windows power user, because you're more likely to mistakenly think you know how to use it already, you have expectations. you're going to try to do something one way, and struggle with it instead of finding out you're supposed to be doing it another way because you've always done it a certain way in windows. keep an open mind and avoid making assumptions and you'll have a much better time. this goes for switching to any unfamiliar OS

This was never a thing. TPM was never a hard requirement despite what they claimed. Nor was the CPU requirements. Not that it matters because just like every other version of windows they've upped the CPU, disk, memory requirements. Literal nothingburger.
>or face financial repercussions if they did not
??? LOL, nobody had to pay a dime to stay on Windows 10 or upgrade to 11 without TPM

Where was Klein when Microshaft forced people to upgrade to 7 to get VHD support?
Where was Klein when Microshaft forced people to upgrade to 7 to get basic disk encryption with bitlocker?
Where was Klein when Microshaft forced people to upgrade to 7 to get DX11? Microshaft has the dominant position in Graphics APIs. Where was the complaints?

I have a feeling a lot of normies sided with Windows 10 at release (remember that FREE UPGRADE to Windows 10 only for a limited time, that nagged you in your sys-tray on 7?) and us "nerds" calling Windows 10 out was also calling out those normies for being idiots.

Since then, we've moved on, and now the normies get to freely complain about it, without the nerds having the "told you so" attitude about it.

Idk, in the end, the normie shot himself more in the foot (again), due to vanity (again).

>getting into linux is actually harder if you're a windows power user, because you're more likely to mistakenly think you know how to use it already, you have expectations. you're going to try to do something one way, and struggle with it instead of finding out you're supposed to be doing it another way because you've always done it a certain way in windows.
This but also because of all the fragmentation and the fact distros switch tech stacks every few years means that it will be harder for them to just learn one way. Of course the same happens in windows land to a much lesser level (it's the same os since nt/vista + cancer patches after all) but whenever microsoft does anything of the sort it can force pretty much everyone to update and that becomes the new official method which you have no choice but to learn. It feels less like just an arbitrary developer choice and more like that's just how the world works from their perspective.

>At the 2015 Ignite conference, Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon stated that Windows 10 would be the "last version of Windows".[19][20] The operating system was considered to be a service, with new builds and updates to be released over time.[21] PC World argued that the widely reported comment was however taken out of context, noting that the official event transcript marks it only as a segue rather than a core part of the talk. It argues that Nixon was referring to the fact that he could talk freely at the event because 10 was the last version in current development.[22]

Microsoft probably has no issue supporting windows for eternity, but hardware vendors ultimately have a say.
Both OEMs and silicon vendors have to service their hardware to make sure it works with the latest windows

Windows 10 in particular was equivalent to several windows releases and since every machine that came with Windows 7 onwards is compatible with 10, it means with every major release there has to be some type of validation for every model of machine/CPU going back to 2009. Hardware vendors just couldn't stop supporting at a particular Windows 10 version because as far as the consumer and Microsoft is concerned it's the same major version and must be supported if you support win10

Windows 11 had to come just to drop hardware support.

Companies have to be responsible for what they release to the public. If me microsoft didn't put arbitrary restrictions to update to windows 11 then it wouldn't be an issue. this reminds me of when i worked in a local computer shop. iirc, like the bread and butter of the business was virus removal. got me thinking about all of the viruses and antivirus companies running like a cartel. i know it's possible there are independent groups and individuals who write malware, yet the whole time it felt like it was a concerted operation of the antivirus companies creating the problem so they could sell the solution. the shop refused to warranty the virus removal unless the customer purchased a copy of kaspersky. else, they'd be on the hook for the entire cost if the malware returned. shady af.

>Nobody likes Windows 10
Oh boy
You know how often I find people who act like 2015-2019 didn't happen at all? How many times I've seen them act like 8.1 is worse (when it's far more stable and closer to 7)?
They even changed the windows cycle to accommodate it. Jokingly before people said 10 broke the cycle and "we got 2 bad releases in a row because windows 9 doesn't exist" but now every list is like "XP good, Vista bad, 7 good, 8 bad, 10 good, 11 bad". There's been a lot of revisionism.

Correct. This is the full paragraph. They took the middle of a sentence spoken by a random developer out of context.
You can listen to it yourself at learn.microsoft.com/en-us/shows/ignite-2015/brk2352, section starts just after 15:00
They even clarified later that they can’t speak about future branding.
> "Recent comments at Ignite about Windows 10 are reflective of the way Windows will be delivered as a service bringing new innovations and updates in an ongoing manner, with continuous value for our consumer and business customers," says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge. "We aren't speaking to future branding at this time, but customers can be confident Windows 10 will remain up-to-date and power a variety of devices from PCs to phones to Surface Hub to HoloLens and Xbox.

>microsoft can automatically check for and install updates.

>they can change or remove features at any time.

>your continued use means you accept those changes.

Big tech are shitting their pants because we are in a moment of computing anarchy. Airgapped and old computers are not useless, but don't take this as an excuse to keep really shitty hardware that can't be upgraded. Ivy bridge CPUs will always be viable for basic office tasks, if you can live with a machine that only runs W7 + MSO or W7(+) + VMware for that, then you literally never have to pay for office programs again. Print using XPS Writer, send that shit to Fax and Scan , and you'll end up with your documents as .tif that you can print using any other computer or a usb stick, I mention the .tif thing to dispel any excuses about non-existent printer drivers for older computers. If you have something wayy better than Ivy bridge, then there's a lot more you can do with VMware, but also have the office stuff accessible, since moderately old cpus struggle with software rendering if you are trying to do anything 3d/gaming related on a VM, unless you have the money for more robust virtualization/GPU passthrough.

I got a micro Dell years ago, it's tiny, only has 12GB of ram, but it's amazing because it runs W10 just fine, plus WXPro through VMware for all the office crap.

Even XP is viable for basic office tasks on an old computer, but there are more hoops to jump through to get .tif out, which is why I recommend generating an XPS files which the host (Windows Vista+ natively support it) can send to Fax and Scan for .tif output or direct printing.

Current VMware supports W8+, for W7 you have to hunt down older installers, if you are too lazy to do the workaround for installing W10 on prebuilts that don't support it. VMs generated by W10 are much smaller though, so I recommend you do the latter instead, as W7 fully updated + VMware + VM bloat well over 110GB if you are trying to do more than office tasks.

Just because it's in an EULA doesn't mean it's necessarily legal. Agreeing to be a slave doesn't mean slavery becomes legal. Not that you care, your mind is set on being wrong for some reason.

Even if Microsoft officially provides some limited paid support for LTSC into the 2030s, the end of mainstream support on January 12, 2027 is going to quickly lead to support being dropped by third-parties.
If a vendor won't support their closed-source software, nobody else is going to support it either.
