And if you REALLY must have a smartphone, for emergencies like a car assistance or the police. Keep a nokia 4G dumbphone with no camera(that you know doesn't have an internal battery and you've seen disassembled) in a small ziplock bag with the battery out at all times and only put it in when you are sure you want to use it.

I am forced to currently because of school. The school network will refuses to cooperate with my Artix thinkpad setup which I take in to complete work. As a result I am forced to swap my sim card in between my Nokia dumbphone I regularly use and a smartphone so I can hotspot my laptop via a USB cable while at school. At least I don't use an iBad. At least school will be over soon and I can finally rid myself of the smartphone.

Basically this. A Windows 7 / Linux dualboot on a 2011 era CPU works just fine for 99% of things.

They're like really really convenient especially if you learn how to use Termux. The CPUs aren't powerful but god damn, the energy efficiency is absurd. Like encoding AV1 video through libsvtav1 uses 1 watt of power. That's not even the power consumption of a laptop IDLING.

I actually tried living this lifestyle. I had an old Linux laptop and I only used public wifi. I canceled my internet subscription. Let me tell you this: It is extremely uncomfortable and not practical. I works well when you have nice weather and when random people are not annoying you. To some degree, this lifestyle has also its own privacy flaws: People around you see you, the weird guy with his ancient laptop. They look over your shoulder on your screen. Everywhere are CCTV. You stick out and you are attracting attention. Is this what privacy looks like?

No you don't scan it, you generate it on your phone from an app and security scans it and lets you in. To generate that you need to login to school app using your school email. And when you login from multiple accounts from one phone, you need to mail the IT so they let you login again or there is a 24 hour cooldown period. The whole thing is utterly retarded.
