live coding is easily the most retarded thing there is for tech interviews, you almost never have to solve a random puzzle on a 1 hour or 2 hour time limit while at work, studying for it is an entirely different skill than knowing programming (so much so that people have to dedicate time to just livecoding practice AWAY from learning their language) and most of the time any real problem you will ever have while working as a developper will be solved in a few hours, maybe even a work day after consulting documentation, reading manuals, even consulting ai and stack overflow most of which is not allowed in these live coding sessions, why the fuck do they make us do something that will never EVER happen at the job you're applying to and isn't even a transferrable skill. its so retarded.

anyway i just applied to a job that basically asked me if im an expert on x programming language, i said yes because of course but ive only ever done kiddy scripts and those have taken me a few days to do on my own with heavy reliance on other people online to finish my projects, how can i prepare for the eventual expert-level live coding questions they'll give me?

That said, I'm not sure where to go. I have a BSc degree I've never 'used'. I've kind of got by all my life being an intelligent, systems-minded, creative problem-solver, tech-savvy type of guy. but now I see the value of this kind of work is crashing to zero. what do?

i get that. fibonacci requires recursion or some thinking on the spot (hard during an interview) to come up with an iterative solution, but factorial? you multiply a bunch of numbers together, that's barely above hello world for a developer, come on:

int factorial(int n) {
int result = 1;
for (int i = 2; i <= n; i++) {
result += i;
}

I'd take it as pretty serious, though framing these things as the only important luxuries is (possibly willfully) ignorant of the material conditions of our present economy: you need these things AND money to live well.
Too many tech positions lack the freedom for self determination; you just do whatever pops up in Jira. There's very little agency, you're just expected to sprint your scrums unless you've had the luxury of enough self-determination to break this cycle.

You can use OOP in Lisp/Scheme.

(lambda (x y) (+ x y)) is basically a function.

((lambda (a b) (lambda (x y) (+ a b x y))) v0 v1) is basically an object.

((lambda (c d) (lambda (a b) (lambda (x y) (+ a b c d x y)))) v0 v1) is basically a factory.

Yeah, part of the bitching and moaning about H1B is because if you started school into the post-covid hiring surge you graduated into the mass-firing and not only are you now competing with senior devs for entry roles, but a lot of those "overhired" positions have been vacated and just replaced with Indians.
College doesn't prep you for corporate development work (most don't anyway, at least not undergrad) and people don't mind having to be on probation with an entry job the same way you are with electricians (relevant to >>106340861 point), but the software industry has largely both "required" a college degree for civil rights issues (It became illegal to just IQ test people and hire them based on trainability decades ago because it was considered an infringement on black people's rights to not be judged by their IQ) while also both refusing to then train new grads in an official capacity but also not influencing curriculum to make the quasi-mandatory college entry fee actually prep them for being hirable.
Instead they'll still have all the training expenses by hiring H1B workers to fuck everything up until they get PIP'ed or the company collapses when they could just hire from their glut of new grads and get a better result.

It's just a corporate thing in general, people expect you to have experience in what you are getting into before you even have the chance to get that experience. The thing that bothers me personally the most is that they are doing this while their competent seniors are retiring without a successor that they trained to pick up the slack, which is going to have DIRE long term consequences. The thing I hear the most regarding this is "Then they should've done internships", but internships are usually full time where I am from and are lower paying to the point of stress being put onto students to barely scrape by, do basically full time work AND go to university to pass classes, all for a piece of paper and experience that may or may not get recognized despite skill level. The idea of the "entry level" is a misnomer these days across all academically inclined fields. The only one that "may" get by is engineering, but even then they have a huge crisis of old blood not even teaching the new blood.

The worst I had recently was a COBOL gig on the other side of the county. They'd done phone interviews and had me drive across county for the office tour/contract signing and rescinded the offer at the end, after giving me the documents, because I tried to negotiate the pay from 50k to 55 so I could move to cut down on the commute with a little more breathing room (they were located immediately next to some apartments in a town that was only a little more expensive than where I currently stay). Even after saying how their entire COBOL team was looking to be retired in 5 years and that they'd want me there for a decade or however long, they did not even counter a 10% base pay bump and sent me home after driving across the county and spending 2 hours on a tour lol.

Win win for most college kids since they get relevant experience before finishing school and the company gets to select the higher tier intern to replace a slot in the company.
