me, and i actually use that exact phone (nokia 3310 3g)

life has been great since I switched (switched in 2019). i realized how silly it was to carry around a computer with you at all times. mood improved, better mental clarity, no more doomscrolling, less anxiety, better sleep, get more shit done, etc.

it broke my issues with smartphones too. i still have a smart phone, but i hate using it. i turn off colour (enable monochrome colour settings, and dont have any apps. my battery lasts 7-10 days too, so no more bullshit with charging a phone every night.

i dont have social media either (other than a discord account), so that helps too.

the phone addiction out there is crazy and rampant. people just cannot stand there and look at their surroundings, it's really sad and pathetic. they can live their life how they want, but goddamn it feels pretty good to live like people in the 90s. funny how we didnt have cell phones, just landlines and an answering machine, yet everything was fine and we all still got shit done.

never going back to a smartphone. life is too good.

For me (like you) it's not about a dumb phone or social media addiction (that's just a symptom of weakness) but it's about usability. I much prefer my old samsung gt-something that lasts for a week, physical buttons with a backlight, simple ui, replaceable battery, small and compact, and with all useful basic apps, than any modern smartphone.

They don't make modern smartphone to be useful, the predecessor of the modern smartphones was called a Personal Digital Assistance, now it's just a glass slab you waste your time on.

With the path humanity is walking I don't expect people to create a demand for a useful PDA, but the smartphone will get only dumber. So if you want something useful you will need to make it yourself(tm).

Not that Anon, but 2G is still available in germany. We have 4G and 5G as well and 3G was shut down years ago, but 2G is still active as kind of an emergency fallback option - which means I can still use my Nokia N97 from 2009. I think it will be shut down between 2028 and 2030 depending on the provider.

I like how the smartest individuals of 2025 don't use technology, when just 20 years ago it was the opposite.

I'm a dumbphone Chad and a lot of zoomers laugh at me for not owning a dopamine slab. But they don't understand.
They don't understand, that dopamine slabs were never for us, they were always for them.
Today I spent 24 hours with an old Nokia and instantly felt more free. No more notifications or waiting for my phone to beep so it can rape my psychology so that Zuckerberg can get a bit richer.

The only problem is that without Tiktok, you will never get laid, because women basically live inside phones these days. Since Biblical times, it's the women who lead the men astray.

It's not possible to use Revolut without a smartphone and opening bank, stocks app without needing to log in is convenient. Smartphones doesn't mean it's only a toy. For some people it's a toy, for some it's not. You are not forced to use the phone for entertainment.

I get what you mean but there's one thing that bothers and confounds me:
why can't I do all that stuff with a laptop? Why the hell do some services specifically require me to do it on a fucking phone? The interface on a laptop is a million times better.

I don't like this too. It's only more convenient, because 2FA necessities a phone. When I need to pick up the phone when I log in on the desktop I could just pick up the phone in the first place... and skip that. BUT the apps themselves on the desktop are designed like mobile apps. The experience is as bad. I fucking hate that I can't open in tab something on the website. SPAs were a mistake, I always hated them but it's especially bad for bank, goverment websites etc were you fucking want to have a page in other tab at the same time... So instead of having common sense experience you need to copy the data into a text editor to have access to it. Pure retardation.

I was too young to really know anything about how they worked, so I'm not sure what the tech and range was like - I think they talked to people across the city so I'm sure it wasn't really radio.

An older relative of mine uses a dumbphone and she received a second identical dumbphone as a gift. I asked her to give it to me, but I'm not sure if it will work since she's on a different provider. I want to use a dumbphone when I go out since my smartphone has too much data on it.

I think the actual smartest individuals would know how to make technology work for them. No one with two functioning brain cells would permanently give up the benefits of modern tech just because a couple notification are annoying. A smart person would just turn off the notifications.

You don't need a computer to go out with you all the time. If I want to be entertained, I just put some music, or some narration on my phone for that journey.

It's very easy, anon. Just put your finger in the hole (haha) for the number you want and rotate the wheel clockwise until you hit the metal stop, then you let it go and repeat for the next number until you're in business.

Yes I did read what he wrote, and I still say that you don't need a computer to go out with you all the time. That's what smartphones are, pocket computers, unlike a dumb phone which is about local communication and isn't balls deep into the internet ecosystem.

Ah yes. The contraband prisoner cell phone. I wonder how many prisoners post on 4chan every day from state / federal prison. The numbers are likely VERY VERY VERY surprising.

>2FA like Microsoft Authenticator for university/job accounts
Once I overcome these, you can bet I'll go dumb.

I can tell you exactly how it worked. Motorola built out a digital two way radio network with government money. They had plenty of bandwidth leftover from police/first responders/state/federal government and sold capacity to commercial operators. Every state in the US still uses this digital radio network for those same government operators. The internet is used as a backbone between towers that can’t repeat, or have radio attenuation.

>How did this happen?
It's pretty simple, just don't be an absolutely kiked country that kills functional technology just to keep consoomer economy flowing.
2G handles calls and SMS just fine, 3G is obsolete because it only offers faster internet and LTE/5G is better at that anyway. There is no reason to kill 2G except to force people to throw away their working cellphones and buy new ones, just like with notebooks that artificially don't support Windows 11.

have a dumbphone at home that just stays in a drawer. i do the same when i need something for banking or 2FA for my broker.

for 2FA like microsoft and google, use any device from token2 like the Token2 Molto-1-i. it can store 10 2FA QR codes and works offline, plus you can lock it with a PIN.

for talking to relatives, either talk to them less when you are out, or deal with having a dumbphone running android that you can either natively install apps or sideload them.

The problem with phones is the onboard software bloat.

I wish there was a phone which used 5G, had a basic browser and phone, and nothing else. No onboard bullshit AI. No gesture bullshit. No acessibility spy on audio bullshit. No ads.

Just let me call people and maybe look at porn. I dont need a third thing.

my flip phone is my sense of peace.
it's an option i have at any point to easily, effortless turn off my digital life.
a smartphone is used for music, navigation, youtube, the internet...if you use a smartphone you'll never feel compelled to turn it off because it's used for so much.
with a flip phone, you are freed. if you don't want to talk to people, you don't keep it on. you don't have any reason to need it on 24/7.
